    Mountain biker killed

There was a mountain biker attacked and killed by my house today by a mountain lion in Whting Ranch. I used to ride there a lot and this hits close to home.

    Re: Mountain biker killed

I just recently saw a mountain lion on my home to Idyllwild one night, driving up the mountain in the dark with nothing around and it was walking across the road as I was coming around a corner, it wasn't such a blind corner so I wasn't really in danger of hitting it. At first it looked like a stray dog, maybe a BIG german Shephard or something, but once I got closer I could see what it was, and it scared the crap out of me just seeing it. Over the years friends of ours up there have found one living under their house and hit them with their cars, caused some damage.

    John,
We can thank all the dim witted california voters who passed the mountain lion protection act some years ago. Just goes to show what happens when you let the uneducated public try their hand at managing wildlife instead of letting those who know how to do it. This is certainly not the first attack that has happened in recent years and it won't be the last.

    Note: I didn't take this one off-topic.

Dave - I disagree with you on this one. Animals were running around before OC was OC and I don't think the earth would be a very fun place if you let the other dim wits remove everything considered a danger or nuisance. It's terrible somebody had to die because of this animal attack but people die everyday in all sorts of preventable accidents. What's your solution?

    RE:" What's your solution?"

The solution is to manage the wildlife. Weather we like it or not we as humans have decided to encroach on the mountain lions habitat and as a result we need to face the music and be responsible and manage the populations to protect people and other wildlife species and maintain a suitable ballance. The rampid population of mountain lions has desemated the deer population in california as well as the sierra bighorn sheep. It has been long known that biologist within the Department of Fish and Game have never been in favor of protecting mountain lions to this degree but their hands are tied because of what the voters have done. I consider them experts in the management of wildlife and it should be them that manages this problem and not a bunch of uneducated and uninformed voters.

OMS Sports’ Mark Reynolds Loses Life In Mountain Bike Tragedy
Hard-working MX industry rider rep will be missed by co-workers and clients
    - press release -

ANAHEIM, Calif., (Jan. 9, 2004) – It is with great sorrow that the staff of OMS Sports announced today that its rider representative of this past year, Mark Reynolds, lost his life to a mountain lion while riding his mountain bike in Orange County, Calif., yesterday.

“I can’t begin to tell you the amount of grief and pain our company and clients are suffering right now,” said OMS Sports President Fred Bramblett. “I’m numb. This is so unreal. Mark was a very loyal, very hard-working employee here at OMS Sports and will be sorely missed by all of those he came across.

    “Such a tragic, tragic event.”

In addition to his love for motocross, Reynolds, 35, was an avid cyclist and competitive mountain bike racer. Just this past summer he won the California Race Series’ Rim Nordic Stage Race’s 35-39 expert class overall title – capturing the dirt criteria race and second place podium finishes in the cross country and hill climb events.

“This isn’t just a loss to OMS Sports, it’s a loss to the motocross industry in general,” added Bramblett. “Our heart-felt prayers go out to Mark’s family and friends.”

Reynolds has a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing & Business Logistics from The University of Missouri. Prior to joining OMS Sports Reynolds worked at Glidden Paint, CTS (Carmichael Training Systems) and JT (paintball). He is survived by his parents Dona and Gary of St. Joseph, Mo.

OMS Sports is a global, full-service sport marketing agency specializing in athlete representation, strategic marketing partnerships, industry relations, licensing and merchandising opportunities in the world of Extreme Personal Powersports. Re: Mountain biker killed

That hits close to home for me too! I go riding there every once in a while and I always keep an eye out. I am very suprised that the lion actually went for a human (actually 3!!), especially one on a bike. Whitting Ranch is a wildlife park and there have been several mountain lion attacks there. I would agree that there does need to be some management in that area though.

    Re: Mountain biker killed

i seen on the news today a story about a woman who was also attacked by a lion but she lived, apparently the lion has been shot and killed and their now testing it, i`m truly sorry these people died and or got injured but i think killing these animals off is wrong, this is my opinion i don`t want to start a fight with anyone on this board.
