BAJA 500 Trash everywhere =(
Went to the baja 500 to watch the race and noticed one big downside that I know we can not completely control.
THE TRASH LEFT BEHIND.
When we left the silt beds where everyone was pitting it was trashed like a concert. I am not putting blame on the pit crews at all because there were a ton of other spectators. I just want to make everyone aware.
I know we can not police everyone especially if they are not part of the racing community but maybe we can do our best to clean up after ourselves, our pits, and maybe grab some random trash even if it was not left by our group.
Mexico will not kick out SCORE due to trash but that does not mean that we should not try our hardest to leave it the way it was when we arrived. Not baggin on anyone just putting the idea out there.
P.S. The Race was great!!

Re: BAJA 500 Trash everywhere =(
This is not a blanket statement by any means, but in general when I see people at a race littering it is almost always a local.
I will offer them trash bags or tie one up in their location.

You should see deserts of AZ around our home town!! Its from mostly illegals dumping thier trash like the way they do in MX. When we go out jeepin it reminds me of the commercial with the indian in the canoe that was crying from back in the day... Granted its not only illegals doing this, but majority is. I have worked with them for years on farms and you can always tell where they have been. Even our secret fishing hole has been discovered by them and trashed..

Do you think it was IA's that trashed Fossil Creek? It wasn't the locals - there aren't any. Littering sucks, no matter the litterer's nationality.
Hey! You kids!! Get OFF my driveway!!! If you can't go away happy, just go away!

Re: BAJA 500 Trash everywhere =(
In local desert spots I have seen piles of junk that has been dumped by people who would rather not pay dump fees (whether legal or not) and I have seen camps left by riders and racers that were littered with beer cans and other trash.
I am not trying to point fingers at any particular group of people. I am just saying we should all be aware and do our part to keep our riding areas clean. We are all fans of the desert on this forumn.

Re: BAJA 500 Trash everywhere =(
Yes, I agree no matter what the motorsport deisciplne is that we need to be good neighbors to the desert and even if it is not our trash...we need to pick it up which that is what we discuss in our volunteer meetings for Desert Storm Rally...since we use desert dirt roads we do not want to be the ones pointed at for leaving behind trash...public land is everyones responsbility to try to keep it clean even when others are so lazy or have th don't care attitude. All off-roaders and ralliest get blamed for not respecting the land. I know we are all who are in motorsports are better then that...
Plus, I feel the cleandezert.org does a great job to have clean up events in the area of Az and Nevada. We need more of them.

Re: BAJA 500 Trash everywhere =(
I totally agree. If we pick up our trash at the races in Mexico and other races it will make the people who let us racers into the desert more likely say yes to having another race there again.

I believe cleandezert.org is doing the Barstow, CA clean up this November. It is great for the desert and an all around great time.
Check for updates on their website!

Re: BAJA 500 Trash everywhere =(
Some pointers I have been given in the years of being in Baja.
1 Always haul out your trash that you make.
2 burn all paper trash at the pit/camp.
3 never buy bottles always aluminum.
4 always crush the aluminum and leave it for the locals. As long as you are in a area that has people around. (This may be a contradiction but it supports the local area) If in remote areas take it with you and give it to a populated area.
5 Don't ever think that someone else will clean up after you.
6 Always leave your pit/camp cleaner then when you got there. That means hauling out stuff that you didn't bring.
Together we can make a difference. It is something we as a community have to do to keep our sport alive.
