    1996 Ford F150 injectors?

I am hoping somebody can help me. I have a 96 F150 with a 302 it's a 5.0 and I am having trouble figuring out an issue. It started with the truck just running overall bad it would lose power and I would either have to let off the gas for a minute or just hold it to the floor and eventually it would come back up to full power and it has done this off and on for a year now but lately it has gotten worse, and worse to the point to where it wouldn't even start and if it did it would just chug and blow smoke and die. I just did plugs, wires, rotor & cap, oil change, new ignition coil, new evap purge valve and it is now running again but like s**t. It runs rough, wants to die, etc, etc so I had it checked for codes and I got a P0302 cylinder 2 misfire and a P0175 system to rich bank 2. Now that I am in Oregon I don't know who I can trust to take it to and not get raked so I seeking a little advice from my RDC bruthas. My thought ( not being mechanically inclined) was that it is the injectors so I guess what I am looking for is somebody who may have had a similar situation, or somebody that just knows Fords who might be able to give me a little info.

    Thank you,
    Bob Bowers.

A couple things jump into mind for you to check -

O2 sensor, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, MAF... The misfire can cause the rich code, but being overly rich can also cause the misfire. So if you do have an injector that is stuck open then it can cause this. What did the plugs look like when you pulled them? Rich misfire should be black. A cheap fix might be to find a set of 5.0 injectors from a junkyard and throw them in. Check your fuel pressure too - a bad regulator can also cause those symptoms.

Thanks Sparky! I gotta get it to the shop. As of last night it is not running again well it will fire but you've gotta keep your foot in the gas and as soon as I let off it will either die or it starts chugging and blowing white smoke then just dies.

    Re: 1996 Ford F150 injectors?

    1. Pull the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator and look for signs of fuel. If there is any the diaphragm has broken and is flooding the intake with fuel.

    2. Check the intake for restriction: like a very badly clogged filter.

    3. Check the MAP sensor vacuum line, if it is broken/disconnected the truck will run rich. Also try unplugging the map if the vacuum line is ok.

    White Smoke = Water
    Black Smoke = Fuel
    Grey Smoke = Oil

Check for a blown Head Gasket and/or water consumption if you are seeing white smoke.

pull the fuel line, could be in tank filter/pump, in our superduties at work we sometimes have to take off line and blow back into the tank to clear line.

    Re: 1996 Ford F150 injectors?

So I have narrowed it down to what seems to be the connector for the MAF. Truck runs (** OOH LA LA**** OOH LA LA**** OOH LA LA**** OOH LA LA**ty) but it runs when the connector is unplugged and will die when it is plugged in so, I'm thinking bad connector or one of the four wires. The solution continues. Thank you for the responses.

The MAF could be dirty or damaged.

Spray the sensor wire in the MAF with some electrical contact cleaner. They do get dirty (and oily if you run a K&N). The wire is fragile though so be careful.
