The Reason the ecotecs go into limp mode is exactly what Greg said. When the engine gets hot the VVT cam position sensors wig out and kick it into limp. It's an easy software fix... Unless your crap comes OOTB from a JY like Pete's stuff. That is why Pete says Motec is okay... Because it benifits him and because he don't know what is already known nor how to fix it...
