Best fan setup for a prerunner

What do you guys think the best setup is for a prerunner? Electric, mechanical with clutch, or a flexalite? I'm leaning toward an engine mounted fan rather than electrical and I like the simplicity of a flex fan, but I've also heard that at slow speed/high rpm that flex fans might not be optimum.

Nice big mechanical with a fan clutch. The stockers go 100K miles, why mess with success? Plus it takes a lot of load off your alt....... Now if you get one of those radiator top oil coolers for the tranny and incorporate it into the shroud you can have good tranny cooling also without any extra electrical load and it won't be blocking flow to your radiator......... If you need pics of this set-up, I can get you some.........

I was just worried how the clutches hold up to the pounding but I agree that they are good setups. I'm always down for looking at people's setups. I really want to keep all the cooling up front rather than in the bed.

i am a mechanical fan guy. Dont use those flex fans. Those are junk. Get a legit steel blade fan. speedway motors stock car stuff. They are cheap like 20-30 bucks. You can do the fan clutch but i would got spacer right to the water pump. other than the bolts falling out i dont see a problem that could happen. Knock on wood. And lets be honest the 3 hp from the clutch fan over the solid fan you wont even notice.

I gave up an electrical and went back to a stocker. Happy I did, less amp draw, runs cool, no failure worries!

Re: Best fan setup for a prerunner

I have never been able to get electrical fans to cool a truck pulling high rpms in sand/silt beds under load. OEM fan/fan clutch is the way to go. Flex fans and fans with just spacers seem to kill water pumps faster.

with a mechanical fan and good shroud on a properly running truck it's almost impossible to overheat...almost.
