    Angry Too much travel?

Does anyone have any suggestions about why or how I am breaking ring gear? I've broken 5 so far. Trannies have all been fresh, ring an pinion magged. We have check the degree ( about 11 ) up and down. Spring plates sit just about an eighth of an inch off stops ( without driver an co ). Thinking about limit straps and taller bump stops to give up a little travel. UGH ! Any ideas? Please let em rip!

10 degrees on bump and droop, usually the side gears break or the axle spade breaks when over traveling is the problem. Ring and pinion damage is usually caused by landing under load, it could also be your setup. You guys looked pretty good out there last time out.

Forgot to mention that we use 2 good straps to hold tranny tight. 1 up front by nose cone and 1 on tranny bell.

We have broken an axle spade before. Car is handling so much better. Not much swapping going on, stays pretty straight to avoid side load. But i still think we are over travelling those axles. When we put axles and tubes on car we always check for binding and set them with a smooth movement. When we broke the axle spade, we also broke the axle tube right at the dish. Guess the two go hand in hand.

    Re: Too much travel?

what axles are they stock or SAW??? The stock you should be able to get 11 max but SAW maybe 10 from what i have done. I would go max 10 like Bud said either way and is your builder a known shop or a buddy? You must have the R&P set up perfect for them to last. I ran 9.5 degree up and down with limit straps and rubber bumps up top. Your down stops if welded on must be right on if you dont have straps to fine tune the angle. Like Bud said landing while under power will be the main issue for the R&P and axle angle would be more for breaking spider gears and axles.

When we broke an axle spade it was SAW. Jim Clements does our tranny. Warren Messick built the car. Quite a bit of experience between the two, thats why I am so tripped out by the R&P issues we are having. You get the PM about the ball joints? Thanks Doug, I appreciate any input I can get on this. Pretty frustrated.

Not sure what kind of clutch disc you are using, but make sure it is stock with the springs in it, and then set your travel at 10 degrees up and 10 degrees down. If that doesn't work, let me know. I was breaking trannies almost every race too, and now I'm not having any issues.

4.37 or 412s? 4.12s are stronger... Use a stock clutch disc, I prefer the one from Sachs WITHOUT springs. Stage 1 Kennedy....Get your foot off of the gas when you get air, and your problem should go away....IMO, it's not a wheel travel issue...
    SEE YOU AT THE RACES!!!

I would agree, it is a right foot issue.
