    sbc 350 running rough

I had a gear drive in my 350. took it out and put in a regular double roller chain. lined the dots up on the gears and put all of it back to together. it wouldnt start (acting as if the dizzy is 180 out) so i took spark plug out and put my finger over the hole cranked it till it pshhhh air out. i lined up the line on dampner to "0" on the plate on the timing cover, took dizzy cap off and it was 180 out. so i restabbed so its facing #1. It started right up and runns like crap still acting out of time. i never had this problem. it would back fire out of the carb. (indications of timing) put a timing light on it with vacum advance off and its total timing is 35. its still runns real rough. and knocks ligtly as if its out of time. Timing is good. I replaced the dizzy, replaced carb. checked all the vlaves and still runs rough. its got me puzzled. i dont know what to do. timing is on, and basically new components. Keep in mind this motor ran fine befor i took the gear drive out. wtf aany suggestions would greatly be apprciated.

A balancer can slip and make the timing marks incorrect. Try adjusting the timing by ear. Keep advancing it until it is hard to start and then back it off a few couple of degrees. You could also put the engine on TDC using a piston stop on #1 and then check the 0 degree mark on the balancer.

Another thing you should always do when messing with timing chains is degree the cam. This is important in a street engine and fifty times more important in any competition engine. I've seen the marks on timing sets be up to 9 degrees off!

My thoughts exactly on degreeing the cam...

I'd check the easy things first. It sounds like the wires may still be incorrect.
