getting into rally racing

Hello my name is Levi and i'm from Maine. I'm currently I'm working on my 87 toyota supra with plans to start rally racing. Any help with direction on where to start out or what to watch out for would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking about starting at some scca rallycross (lowspeed type stuff) to work on my car control then more to regional races. So far i'm thinking I should start with the safety reg. like seats rollcage and hints or idea are appreciated.

Start by researching the rules of all the different race orgs. Try to design your cage to meet as many different org's rules as possible to maximize the value of the car later.

Thanks alot scott, its looking like a FIA approved cage will work for everything. I'm excited to start and get some experience and learn alot thanks for getting me started.

Just wondering I read through basically all the FIA rollcage rules and it doesn't seem to say that the welder has to be certified, also it seems that it is basically a visual inspection of the welds. Just wondering if this is correct thanks for the help again.

FIA rules can make you dizzy. Visual is the word. Even if you go by the D1.1 that covers most all typical welding, it states visual for everything under 3/16" thickness, and no UT testing required. I could be a little off, I'm rusty these days.

More cages I have seen for FIA in rally are a joke, and the values are based on "overall" cage design, not what typically is done.

Your cage does not need to be FIA homologated to run rally events in the united states, just make sure that your cage builder knows and understands the requirements outlined in the Rally America and NASA rallysport rulebooks. They do have very specific guidelines when it comes to metal material, dimensions, and locations of bars.
