5/8" Wheel mounting options - input appreciated

I have a rear axle converted to 5/8" studs.

My options the way I see it to mount the lug-centric wheels are:

    1. Fabricate a spacer to center the rim opening (I suppose it's cetered from the mfg even if wheels are lug-centric - please correct me if I'm wrong) against the axle hub center.

    2. Open up the countersink in each lug hole to fit larger 5/8" conical lug nuts.

    3. Try to find stock size studs that fit into 5/8" splines on the axle flange

What would be the best way to go in your collective experience?

I am certainly no expert in this arena, but from race experience conical lug nuts in lug centric rims are the way to go. I would go with option #2. Options 1 and 3 could lead to part failure down the road with the abuse these things take off-road. A possible third option would involve installing a 5/8 sleeve in the rims, counterbore, and then use a wide flange or washer integrated lug nut. The counterbored rims with either the solid or spinning integrated washer lug nuts required more attention, we would tighten them down every pit stop which is good practice, but not so good if it is necessary. It was more of a problem on new rims. The conical lug nuts always came in nice and tight, plus the newer Kartek TT hubs we are running on the new truck come with conical lug nuts. It will not take much either in cost or labor to countersink the rims and buy conical lugs. The countersink does not neeed to be very deep to get the job done either.

What kind of wheels? When we got our Methods machined for the 5/8 studs it was about 20 bucks per wheel. If your wheel has enough material that's probably the easiest thing to do and will hold the best. I also like the conical lugnuts.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I'll go with conical lug nuts. Wheels are used and look like rockcrusher model (not sure on the brand) and will go on a 9" I'm installing on a pre-runner.

I'll throw one more option out there...the attached picture is what I run with my AR-23 wheels. These lug nuts were made by Desert Specialties, but I don't believe they are making them anymore. I had some custom made as spares as well and any machinist should be able to make them. All you would have to do with your rims is open up the holes and make sure the taper on your rims match the taper on the lug nuts.
