Which Transaxle?
What transaxle would you guys recomend for a tube chassis baja bug? The car has an a-arm front, will pull about 20" travel all the way around, run a stock 4.3l chevy with 33" tires and is mostly going to be ran in the sand. This is a tight budget build but I dont want to worry about buying a new tranny every time I take it out. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Which Transaxle?
The Mendeola 2D or the Weddle HV-1 would probably be good choices for your application.

fully built 091 with all the good stuff inside, phoenix main shaft, weddles gears and R&P. if your smart about how you use your tranny and right foot, it will last just fine. the 4.3 don't have that much power anyhow. I ran 5 seasons on a 091 like this with 385 hp V8, I used a stage 3 PP and heavy duty style stock clutch disk, which I changed every season, this saved my tranny IMO.

Re: Which Transaxle?
Cool, I am glad to hear a good 091 should do it.I like the idea of running a Medeola or the weddle but the budget isn't there for those. I figured running a stock clutch would also help save the trans too. IIRC the stock 4.3 only has 190hp. So if you ran 385hp I should be able to make it live. Out of curiosity how long do you guys think a type 1 tans would live with a gentle foot and a stock clutch?

not very long on a heavy car. they take decent HP with a little hill shooter car pretty well though.
we have a weddle in a baja bug with A-rms and a honda 3.5. nice tranny.

Re: Which Transaxle?
I have the exact tranny 091 that was described $2500 if you are interested. Weddle everything, chromoly diff, kartek 930 flanges, and less than 400 miles on the tranny. built this year by wright gear box. Still in the car if you want to test it. I am running a 150 hp eco tec so this would show you almost exactly how your car would run with this particular tranny.

I know this is probably not what you want to hear but, 07JFRog said a "Fully Built 091" with all the good stuff and a Weddle R&P should handle it. Go price a Fully built 091 with all the good stuff and you might not like what you see. I bet you will end up around a $grand less then a Mendeola or Weddle gear box. So for a $1,000 dollars you will probably be happier in the long run with a bigger better gear box. Go price just a Weddle R&P and I think you will see that it alone will cost you $1,000.
BTW I saw a new Mendeola 2D in the classifieds for $4250.
