9 inch leak
I've noticed that there has been drops of oil on my axle housing/tubes for a while and never thought much of it because it was only a few drops..but today I took my jeep to some good trails and when I returned home there was a VERY large amount of oil in the undercarrige/axle. I am 99 percent sure its coming from where the drive shaft enters the third member. These are Currie ford 9 inch axles. I was wondering how hard it is to replace that seal and what i would have to take apart.
thanks in advance

Re: 9 inch leak
If it's just the yoke seal, than you'll have to remove the yoke. Probably gonna need some heat to kill the loctite on the pinion nut. A strong 1/2" impact gun should take care of the nut. Remove the yoke and pry the old seal out with a seal remover or big screwdriver. Clean any dirt and debris off the seal bore. Take youe time and tap the new seal in making sure to drive it in straight. If it's a small pinion gearset, it's a CR 18833 or a NAT 7044. Big pinion gearsets use a Nat 472016, 472015 or CR21164. Clean the threads of the pinion and pinion nut with carb cleaner very well making sure to remove all the oil. Put some grease on the yoke and slide it into the pinion housing. 271 loctite on the threads and a little RTV on the pinion nut where it contacts the yoke. Impact gun for a couple seconds after the nut stops turning and you're good to go. The different seal #s are for different pinion supports. You'll need to know which one you have to get the correct seal. NAT 472015 and CR 21164 are identical. CR 18833 and NAT7044 are also the same. NAT 472016 is generally used in trophy truck 10" style third members.

How tight should I torque it down to? It says to "mark the threads and count how many turns it takes to get the nut off", but its a little late for that now... So to keep me from damaging the bearings and crush sleeves what should I do?
