For the record I have had something stolen ONCE at a military check point. But only one time in my 30+ years of going to Baja.. I count it as that one time you run into a bad apple..
Sure Art, my sincere apology, sincere mistake, Caspino, Eugenio, kind of along the same tune, Filipino maybe?

Help? keep your five bucks, and stay ignorant of the Baja experience.

    Re: Baja Tip #2-Military checkpoints

the mexican military for the most part is very professional. they along with every country's military have some bad apples. they see lots of wealthy gringos all day long with big fancy rigs loaded with expensive toys. and some of those visitors, certainly not the majority, have bad attitudes and act like idiots at the checkpoints. the temptation to pocket something must be huge. I have been through just about every Military checkpoint in Baja and Baja Sur many many times and I have NEVER had anything taken. I usually have a cell phone, a sat phone , gps or 2, flashlight, walkies, scanner, laptop and a few cameras and never feel uncomfortable leaving them in my truck. I am always diligent about keeping an eye on the crew searching my truck but never impeded their search. If you act like you don't trust them, you will be there longer. Let them do their job. They are protecting you and keep Baja safe enough to have a Baja 1000.

I always have an 8' inch fish fileting knife in one of my tool boxes and a super sharp hatchet and have never had a problem.

The Policia are a whole other deal. When encountering them be polite but hold your ground if you think you are being accused of something you didn't do. Always pay your fines at the station. NEVER bribe a cop. you are just encouraging them to do it again. If you are speeding and deserve a ticket pay your fine. it's cheaper than if you got a ticket on interstate 15. just because it's Mexico doesn't mean you can break the laws down there. represent the USA well by being a good guy.

playing cards and anything that passes the time in the middle of nowhere are good handouts at the checkpoints.

if you don't know the words por favor and gracias you should learn them.
    When in doubt, paddle out.

my buddy got his phone or something like that stolen from a soldier at a checkpoint, after he realized it was stolen he went back and talked to the soldier in charge, he quickly made all his soldiers empty all their pockets and bags infront of them, the soldier who stole it got caught right away and was punished for it

so if you ever get anything stolen i suggest doing the same even, other than that time none of my friends or myself have had any problems

So I guess you think taking away their land ,raping their women, killing and destroying American Inadians was'nt enough for them either Mike! Yea Blame it on the Town of Parker, good one! lol We should be thankful to the town of Parker for accepting us, after all we did leave 2 tons of garbage on the track last year.
Was'nt this in another thread Mike? why carry it into a thread about military checkpoints? Look up the word "Logic (law gick) I wrote it phonetically for you! The quickest way to lose an arguement is to go off topic and insult someones character(5 year old's do this) Yes Mike you can make fun of my medical marijuana use all you want. Have all the laughs you want. In fact why dont you come to one of our V.A. PTSD Support groups and make fun of the other combat injured vets who use Medical Marijuana. They are every wed night @ 7m in Westwood. We have guest speakers allthe time.

Be careful, don't leave anything for the taking. My procedure for search goes like this. Lock every door possible, leave your driver door open, only allow 1 soldier to search your vehicle, first let him search the driver area, when done lock driver door and move on to next door and repeat. KEEP Your eyes on the soldiers hands, do not look anywhere else. These guys are pretidigitators. Then when the car is done being searched, lock it up TIGHT! then move on to your trailer. Open the trailer door and again watch him like a hawk! When that is done LOCK your trailer back up get in your car and boogie. NEVER let 2 soldiers search your car, they work far better in teams. If you have 4 guys w you ,have every guy watch his area from 2 feet away from the door. Satphones Wallets and cellphones are the #1 items, good idea to keep these items on you during a search( they never search the body) DO NOT TRY TO BRIBE A SOLDIER!( Cops yes) Things like stickers,t-shirts(especially),cigarettes, cold sodas and Porn will make your stops much easier and faster. These checkpoints will also be on your prerun also, out in the middle of nowherere. The soldiers are mianly looking for guns going south(Chiappas) and drugs going North. Main thing is to be calm and courteous to the soldiers. If you use recreational drugs hide them very well, some checkpoints will have K-9s. Dont ever bone out in the desert and try to pass a checkpoint line, great way to get shot from a trigger happy 15 year old. I'm sure alot of the ol baja dogs can chime in on this one! good luck
You are insane , I have many friends that are Vets and my father was 3 wars with 2 purple hearts. If I acted like you they would whoop my arsh. I have gone to almost every Mexico race for many years and never encountered this and half of your statements are not true.

At the San Felipe check point the soldiers got very excited at something they found in my trailer, shut down the check point, lots of yelling, pointing fingers, wepons on the ready, there must have been 15 guys in there. They ordered us out of the truck and placed a small suspicious looking metal case on my tail gate and made me open it.

Most of them laughed at the guy that found it and we were on our way, bottom line, dont be stoopid.
    Good times......
