Last Wednesday I went out there to have him fix/look at my trans as it was slipping under load. Got there at 7am, road test with the computer, everything is fine, but still slips, so it must be the Torque Convertor. 9am the trans is out, he is out of stock of the big race TC's like in my truck, so I get a rental, and take the TC with me to drop at the TC builder up near my house.
Get to TC builder, and they cut it open, no real problems, the say they will rebuild it and ship out next day. They did.
John Wood gets the "NEW" TC back on Friday and installs the trans. The trans slips still. John digs deeper into it, and there is nothing wrong electronically at all. He pulls the trans again, triple check.
He installs it again and mic's the end play of the "NEW" TC. It is .200" shorter than a stock one. YES, ALMOST A QUARTER INCH! And we are talking a $1600 Torque Converter, not an off the shelf piece, these are true custom.
That alone won't make the TC slip, but could wipe out the front end of the trans. The TC has a piston style clutch, and the pistons crack sometimes.
My "NEW" TC was built with my old cracked piston inside.
So John messed with my truck until 11pm last night fighting a broken "NEW" TC. He calls me and says can I wait another day, I said yes I understand 100%.
This morning John calls me and says my truck is done??!!??? What did he do? John Wood took one of his newer model (last 9 months or so) TC that are being made somewhere else for this very reason, and put it in my truck. His cost is $1200 for those 1100HP TC's, no joke!
When I picked up my truck, the man would not take any money from me!!! Read that again. He put a $1200 TC in my truck, R&R my trans 4 times, put 25 gallons of synthetic tranny fluid in my truck, all because the TC builder did shotty work, and tried to sneak broken old parts into a "NEW" TC.
John Wood is the most honorable mechanic I have ever met. He could have said an electronic issue is the problem, or how I drive it, anything, and I would have just paid the bill to get it fixed because he has earned my trust, but these are the reasons he HAS earned my trust.
John makes a good living, and he is very honorable and honest. Most mechanics feel you must only pick one, and that is just not the case, you can do both.
Good to hear there are honorable mechanics at there.
