Re: Transaxle options ?
The Star does not use Hewland gearsets anymore, that was only during very early development. Also, the gears are ground after heat treatment to increase life and decrease heat generated during use - Albins are yet to do this.

Re: Transaxle options ?
that is incorrect, the Star gearbox does not use Hewland gears anymore, that was only done during the R&D stage. The Star gears are actually ground gears, making them quieter running & longer lasting, as well as keeping gearbox temperatures done. As far as I know they are the only ones doing that at this stage....

^^^^^^This what you were referring too?
You can also run a clutch with the Star box..........

Re: Transaxle options ?
Here I was just about to push the button on 2 x PBS 5 speed sequentials only to be told by one of their dealers that they aren't ready yet despite assurances that they were a week off 6 weeks ago.
Back to square one again...

Re: Transaxle options ?
An update: As an interim measure, we have used the standard 5 speed TY758 Subaru gearbox (mated to a 2.5L Subaru NA engine). This was converted from 4WD to 2WD with help from Todd Triebler of subarugears.com. He has a great conversion and is probably one of the most helpful suppliers that I have come across.
The TY758 gearbox as standard is geared far too high and we never managed to achieve 4th gear at all. (This didn't deter us from winning the event outright though!).
It now seems that an 'economical' 5 speed transaxle will not be ready in the near future and that we are once again down to the Weddle HV-1 and the PBS RD4, both being H-pattern 4 speed.
Has anyone got a direct comparison between the two?

Re: Transaxle options ?
Yet another update: We have bit the bullet and ordered a Weddle HV-1 which arrived last week. One of the main factors was that the PBS dealer only responded with short one-line answers and it was like trying to squeeze blood from a stone! Weddle answered all my questions promptly and put up with my barrage of questions. We are just about to place an order for the second box....
