If he is indeed over 18 years old, then he is considered an adult and is independent from his parents. You then need to look into your own heart and decide what's best for him.
If it feels right, give him a room and require him to pay you a small monthly rent. Then open a savings account for him and deposit the "rent" money into this account. When the time comes for him to get his own place you can give him this money as a start for education, own place, etc.....Believe me, it's a gift he'll never forget !!

Jeff, IMO, this is the route you might consider. He will never forget the support you gave him, and as many fatherless children look back on their lives, the man who took them in and supported them WAS their father. Do what's right my brother

Without getting into it Jeff I came from a F'ed up life when I was young, at the age of 21 my Dad came and saved me. I don't know if I would have lived another year. Like this kid you are looking out for I was good in school and all that but lost my way. Without being a jerk my Dad came in, gave me an opportunity to start over in Idaho but did it like other have suggested here, it was not a hand out. He put me in one of his rental houses that was a total POS and gave me $500 to survive, he guided me through some things, made it so I was not alone fighting demons and helped me get my life back together. While he was my Dad he did all of this as more of a friend like you are trying to be a friend. That was 19 years ago this month, in 19 years I have come a long way, made a life for myself and my family. I owe him everything and would not be here without him doing what he did. Whether you give this kid a place to live, mentor him or............. You see his potential, help him reach it!
