That would protect it somewhat but dust would still get in there, especially if the port is uncovered so you can run it on vehicle power. And it does very little to protect against moisture, which as we know can be a huge problem in a race vehicle.

Re: iPad in your ride?
Yeah, I have a much nicer solution then that. Don't want to let the cat out of the bag until I get the prototype done
External gps puck
Dust protected touch screen and buttons
12v supply
Mefi/obd2 support
What else do you want?

Audio out. The ability to set the gauges to play audible warning tones (custom mp3s) and to have the gps play audible proximity alarms (also custom mp3s). The audio can be routed to an intercom, external speaker, or even to a stereo that has an aux in port. The idea would be that in your headset you would hear an audible warning like "Caution Transmission Temp" when it gets to say 220 degrees and then a different warning like "Transmission Overtemp" at say 240 degrees.
Here's a sample of an actual cockpit voice warning.

Re: iPad in your ride?
Superchips will be releasing an Android based smart phone, the Vivid, incorporating many of those things...Not really for a full blown race veh, but would be awesome for a street legal late model chase/pre-runner...
https://www.superchips.com/#pn=home&hps=superchipsvivid
The software package would have all the engine/trans tuning that a regular up loader would have, but it would also use a Bluetooth dongle off your OBDII port to allow access to all of your eng/trans info wireless....you could download one of the many Driod based GPS apps. The small 4" screen Vivid unit would also have a USB port to allow use as a reverse camera...
Superchips is planning on releasing the Vivid this spring, but after that they plan on releasing the software to allow use on any Android based unit...
My plan is to purchase the Samsung Galaxy Tab which is a 7" screen unit to mount and use for as a GPS along with all the other things above...
...at least that's the idea for now....

FWIW... iPads, iPods, and iPhones can be configured to read, record, and even make changes, through OBDII diagnostics. The screen can be covered with a thin protector but you may have to come up with a modified glove to make the touch feature work. They don't actually work by touch, but by change in capacitance, similar to aircraft fuel senders.

Other benefits, the accelerometers can give you g force feedback as well as performance measurements and you could watch videos of Danzio and RG as you go through the same sections for motivation!
One concern is whether the iPad can handle the shock and vibration. Can't do too much to reduce that even though we can reduce the dust and water.
How does a GPS puck interface with an iPad?

Bluetooth pucks are easy, not sure about wired.
Might also want to check out the new HP TouchPad. It's claimed to be way ahead of the iPad for multitasking. Looks like it may be easier to navigate on the fly.

I agree that the BT pucks are more widely used, but for our application I want to avoid wireless. Wireless is ok for techies, but BT protocol is too flakey in my experience to trust.

Re: iPad in your ride?
Goat, do you "see" the GPS puck being hardwired but remotely installed on the vehicle (similar to lowrance) or do you "see" it being directly attached, like the BadElf units? If attached to the 30 pin connector (?) will there be a positive locking attachment that prevents it from becoming dislodged?
More importantly, what is the projected timeframe?
