Oil And Additives in 1600 type 1
I would like to know what brand oil or what additives you VW guys are using.
My new motor from last year lost the cam shaft with only 5000 miles. I don't know if it was bad lifters or the oil.
I did not use any oil additives or brake in oil when braking in the motor. I know better now.
My new motor now will be built to Score 5/1600 rules and should be fast and expensive, I don't want a repeat of my last motor.
What oil should I use where can I buy it?
Additives?
Brian

We Run KENDALL 20/50...
I have heard that with some CAMS that a synthetic oil can damage it and cause it to fail. so we run petroleum based oils that were suggested by both our CAM builder and ENGINE BUILDER.
you can get it at KARTEK:http://www.kartek.com/Product/DriveTrain/EngineOil.html
as far as break in oil we always ran our normal race oil and drained it after 50 or so test miles.
never had an engine failure in our racecar

Thanks for the link .
I'm going to call the cam manufacture to see what they recommend.
I had a few people tell me to run semi truck oil like Delo it has all the additives not in car oil any more.
I would like to know what weight oil most run ?

yes its going to be a web cam don't know if it's a custom or off the shelf cam:
Cam Web 274 duration with .430 lift with 1.1 ration rockers
I hope this will run good. I'm going 11.25 on the compression . I having it built to my spec's from what I gathered here over the years. I dont have the budget for a top of the line FAT type motor.
OK on the Kendall 20-50 .

All engines with flat tappet cams need oil with a proper level of zinc and phosphorous. Modern DOT rated street oils, conventional and synthetic, all lack the proper levels due to epa mandates. Check this thread for some good info.

Re: Oil And Additives in 1600 type 1
All our (Amsoil) dominator racing oils contain high levels of zinc/phos for flat tappet cams:

http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?z...torefront/rd50
Using sythetic over petroleum based oils does not damage cams. It is a factor of the zinc/phos that is added to the oil. Any oil that is API SM or later will have reduced levels and have been known to cause damage in flat-tappet engines

Thanks guys some good info I did not know and it cost 1 motor so far but I learn fast and not going to let this happen any more.
I think its a government conspiracy to get rid of all the older cars by letting them get flat cams.
