looking for a u-joint

i'm beginning the install of a saco rack in my beamed baja... i ordered a Sweet Mfg. 48 spline x 3/4" weld on u-joint but it is not machined for a key way. it has a set screw and a nyloc lock nut. i don't feel comfortable just sinking the set screw into the slot for the key, it may work but i know its not the right way. i haven't had much luck finding the correct u-joint and could use a bit of help.

Is it a round bore on one end and a spline on the other? I think round bores are only for shafts being welded together. I have had no problems with whats called the 'D' profile joints, where a big flat spot is milled on the shaft. Check Borgson and Flaming River for more options.

correct on the round end, i will weld it to my chromoly(sp"?) 3/4" shaft. i will check out flaming river and borgson...

Good call. . .set screws are only designed to see a load in compression, not in shear as it would see if you were to sink it into the keyway slot and then the wall of the slot were to bear on it. . .

line up the key slot and the set screw. the splines keep them aligned while rotating and the set screw just keeps the joint from falling off.

Didn't even think about the splines. . .my bad! Happens when you don't have the part in front of you. . .
