Re: 71 f100 prerunner
hello guys just checkin in. really like the old iron. Just built a 400m with cobrajet heads and edelbrock air gap intake. rollered and many other upgrades internal. adjustable vlvtrain. did the cleveland piston flat top and bushed piston pin. pump gas engine around 420 hrspwr i guess. Several oiling upgrades to check out at tim meyer website for this engine. everything is ported flowed fitted top notch build. getting around 270cfm at ports with intake on heads when flowed. this little engine is going in my 1970 crewcab 4wd. like the big blocks but wanted something a little lighter than my bigblocks on this build. catch you guys later.

Re: 71 f100 prerunner
one of the other options is a 434" in a 400m. Just need some heads to breathe with that package. tim meyer is doing these combo and they work pretty nice. john at autofab isn't a fan of the 400 because of stock rods. the rod ratio is about 1.64 in stock applicaiton an not the best for stock rods. the 434 has all the good rods and many other upgrades. really like the build and figured i drop a message and help out on some info. catch you guys later from wyoming. Been workin with john on my build and its coming along slowly crewcab build 4wd.

Is there really that much of a weight savings on the M-block engines vs. the big blocks. . .just wondering cause I know those M-block engines are pretty heavy.

Re: 71 f100 prerunner
if going with cast iron 400 to cast iron 460 about maybe little over 100lbs. if you start dropping aluminum heads/intake maybe 75 lbs difference or a little more. tim has weighed the engines and can answer better than i can. tim meyer is a smart guy to know and has kinda figured out these 400's and been using some of his parts and oiling upgrades. good guy to know about with this paticular engine. the rods are a definete must on upgrade if turning over 4500 rpm constant for extended durations. the 434 will solve this problem with the steel rods also the blocks need to be sonic checked and make sure have even bore castings and not machine to much and have a thin cylinder wall. tim knows all this. ARP everything and torque plate cylinder during final hone which is very critical on rings seal. the bores move around a little at the top about 1" down when torqueing heads down. torque plate simulates this. any questions drop a message and help out. keeping old iron alive one ford at a time. just went through all this recently and learning all the little tricks to make these engines live. 400's are plentiful and cheap. catch you later. really like the truck, badazz! how much invested??? like my bigblocks but a 400 has its place also. another smart engine builder is www.mpgheads.com in englewood colorado. scott main engine master builder also and been top finisher many times, die hard ford guy. has a awesome machine shop and facility for his fords. scott cuts all my cams anymore for me. used him on several big block builds and 400 roller cams. a couple of guys you need to know about. scott knows me as robert from sheridan wyoming. hope i can help you make the best decision you can to get that old truck around the dezert. ha ha!

forgot to mention their is a guy who builds extreme 400 ford up to 490". pullin trucks with engine restriction on swappin out. so have to use block and figured out how to cheat the system. barret motorsports or performance if i remember correctly. some serious heads and you have a 900 hrspwr engine, naturally aspirated. not recomended for endurance application like dezert trucks.

Re: 71 f100 prerunner
just remembering stuff. on the 460 blocks depends on weight. some are heavier and some are not as heavy. the older castings D1ve blocks are heavy especially the 4 bolt mains. i bet compared to 400 maybe 50lbs in blocks alone easy. i can pick up big blocks fairly easy but the early ones i can tell a difference with the thicker webbing at mains and cylinder walls on mass weight. so if you can pull 100lbs off the front of the truck or more this is a good thing. compared to a windsor block yeah they are all heavier than a windsor. used to be able to pick those windsor engines complete and move around, heavy but not impossible to pick up. windsor around 450lbs with short block and heads oil pan. 400m around 550 and 460 atleast 600 or heavier depending on block used. if main bearing supports on smaller engines add a little on weight not much. if you go after market block the windsor is probably the way to go. but stock block not to much difference on durability from my experience. later 400 blocks are better on the casting after 1977, better castings, tim meyer knows this!
