    Mid engine Jeep?

Does anybody remember a jeep racer in the late '70's, think it was Class 3, with a 351 ford turned backwards, C6 gearbox and two front M151 independant suspension units with a boat drive??

I can't remember the guys name but he brought his racer up to our high school auto shop class in the mountains above Fresno and it totally blew my mind. It was a great inspiration to me and taught me to think out of the box and anything was possible if you tried hard enough.

A pic or name would be fantastic!

I've been having odd thoughts of sticking a LS-something or a cheby 572 big block in the hummer backwards, fuel cell up front, etc. Must go lay down in a cool dark room....;-)
    Cheers from over here, Cole

I believe his name was Glenn Emery or Emory and was sponsered by the U S Army. Ran in the early eighties. I have a picture somewhere.

There were a couple of 'mid engine' jeeps over the years. One of them had quite a few class wins.

As I recall, this beast had a 572.

I believe your man was in fact Glenn Emery.Super good guy,a real gentleman, but hard charger. He and I battled for the championship in 1978 in Walt's High Desert series class 4 , modified 4 wheel drive. In the mid 80's Steve Catlin, who I recall was Glenn's son in law ran the car, I competed against him as well.In the 1987 Mint 400 he was first,I was 2nd. Bill Todd out of Duarte also had a similiar car.I recall he and Rod Hall took a second place at the Mint in 1978, I believe. We were 4 th , missed 3 rd by 26 second's.Rocky Bradford out of Anaheim had a similiar car as well in the late 80's.

I made an error about the Rod Hall/Bill Todd, the Mint 1976 is more accurate.

I think Glen Emery is probably who you are thinking of. The rig ran a glass CJ2 body, but that was about the only thing Jeep about it. It was actually rear-engined (at one point, if memory serves, it was Pontiac powered). It was 4wd but with independent suspension, and it won a ton of races. There are some good shots of it on the tracksidephoto.com website. It was driven by others as well. Here's the back cover of the August 1978 Four Wheeler featuring Emery and the rig.

Glen Emery, yep, thats the guy! Funny how one afternoon can change your life. After meeting him and seeing that vehicle up close and personal (we got to crawl all over/under/in and around it!) I was ever after always looking for crazy things to do to my 4x4's!

    Thanks guys!

Hey!! I don't think I have ever seen this Hummer before. Do you know who it is, where from, etc.?? I would like to know more about it. Always looking to poach good ideas ;-)

    Re: Mid engine Jeep?

I thought it was built as a TT Hummer by Rod Halls crew. Actually I think it was Roger Normans! Been a while, I know I took pic's of it at the Vegas 1000 race in
y2k. Think they raced it in sportsman because they were having too many problems with it before the race.
