Re: Global Rally Cross
The first Global RallyCross event is happening at Irwindale Speedway March 25-26 and there's still time to enter.
Stephan Verdier, Rhys Millen and Tanner Foust are a few of the guys competing that will be familiar to the drift community.
There's a $5,000 prize purse available in 2WD to encourage some of the grassroots competitors in the region to come out and compete. There will be a gap jump in this course, but it's for all-wheel-drive cars only. There's a bypass for 2WD competitors.
The course isn't very long and rewards strong starts, good driving and handling. The teams who competed at the fall events in NJ can chime in, but there were a few grassroots drifters there, and everybody had lots of fun.
We'll be paying out $5,000 at Irwindale (The Revolution) as follows to 2WD:
1st Place $2500
2nd Place $1500
3rd Place $1000
And, the top points earner in 2WD after the first three events of the Global RallyCross Championship will earn an invitation to drive at the X Games. (The top few AWD points earners get X Games invitations, too).
Friday features head-to-head competition; Saturday is door-to-door, European Style rallycross.
TV coverage is limited for 2WD, but the event is streaming live on ESPN3 and also to Facebook. The AWD classes will get great coverage on ESPN.
The rules are the same as the rallycross events last fall; most any rally car or road race car built on a stock unibody can compete within the engine displacement and tires size limits.
RallyCar is sanctioning the events and will issue regional licenses on-site. If you have any questions on vehicle eligibility, please contact Mike Hurst at the RallyCar office +1.763.553.2742 or [email protected].
Supps and info are at www.global-rallycross.com. For more information or to sign up, please contact George Tamayo at [email protected].
And if you can't come out and compete, tickets are only $25 to go for both days -- young kids are free!

Re: Global Rally Cross
just scrolling through random stuff here on RDC and thought I would comment on this event.
I can see this sport getting pretty huge here, even though this even was dead empty.
Seemed like maybe 300 people on saturday.
I got free tickets courtesy of Steve's Charburger #4 and Rhys Millen.
It was a fun day, weather could have been better, but it was great to meet a lot of big name drivers. I have been to Rhys' shop a few times and met him, Frenchy, and a few of their friends who are drivers, but at this event I had the pleasure of meeting Tanner Foust, Dave Mirra, Ken Block (yes he was there, no he was not driving), and a few others.
I was told by Mrs. Millen that the event promoters and the track didnt advertise much because they wanted to see how smooth things went being the first race like this here in the US outside of the X Games.
It was great that the pits were open to the public, and drivers and crews were very friendly.
Again, pretty cool driving event, and a sport I can definitely see taking off.
Whats not to like about a 500hp 2500lb awd rocket that drifts, jumps, and slides through the dirt.

Re: Global Rally Cross
Glad you had a great time. The rally community is really excited and already cars are being prepped for the next event...especially for the Colorado event. Lauchlin O'Sullivan who took third in 2WD in a 1987 Toyota Corolla is looking forward to be able to try to compete in that event.
April 17th is scheduled for this event to be on TV. Check your local listings.

Re: Global Rally Cross
Considering that this all came about within 30 days before Irwindale event...not to shabby. Internet TV was HUGE and the fan base was coming from the Europeans watching as well on the 2WD competition. Too bad that Lauchlin could not make it to the second event but concentrating on the Olympus Rally which is coming up on April 30th/May1st.
But Pikes Peak could be coming up with some pretty interesting cast of competition in AWD and 2WD.

Re: Global Rally Cross
They need to do something about the down time between rounds. Right now you'll have an excellent race with a fierce battle (and Dave Mirra hitting something/someone) that gets the crowd all excited... and then fifteen minutes of waiting, killing off all that excitement. I know there's a lot going on in the background and a lot of work that needs to be done, but they need to try and shave some minutes off of that downtime somehow.
I'm really looking forward to the rallycross/TORC shared weekends. I can't wait to hear what competitors on both sides think of the other series/cars/drivers. Maybe if the shared weekend thing continues into next season we'll see some racing in both series on a weekend. Could be interesting.
