    Hello, My name is Steve

I've been into the off-road desert sceen since before I could touch the foot-pegs on a baloon-tire 1979 Honda 110. I remember Competition Hill (Glamis) when there were only a couple whoops at the bottom. Now I take my 2 kids out, but we usually do the hard-pack at Occotillo & Plaster City as we're on 2-wheelers now. Easier to tow on my small trailer. I got into the desert-racing sceen in junior college when a classmate let me pit for their family's 516 team. I had a great time pitting and chasing for them on both sides of the border for quite a few years and looking to get back into it as they have a new car they will be racing.
I found this site way back... I was in a video that was posted on the site. Or my back was in the video anyway. That Laughlin race where the Herbst truck clearred the highway and landed kind of sideways. I was the guy in the black shirt that was sitting down relaxing and then scurring away after that trophy truck flung all kinds of dirt my way!
Most recently, my 16 year old and I have been working on my old previously stock 1986 4Runner (he's inheriting the truck). The truck sat with the head off for 7 years. We rebuilt the engine ourselves over the summer and just recently got it smogged. Now that the truck is going to be my kid's, I've finnaly got the means to do with it what I had wanted to do years ago... Since the rebuild, we've swapped in a set of Toyota 4.88 gears from a newer junk-yard 4Runner, and installed an Aussie Locker up front. We pulled the limited slip dif out of a Toyota Supra and had the guys at Border Parts (Spring Valley) machine it so they could fit it in our truck rear-end. The latest on the 4Runner (and the reason I'm just now joining the Race-Dezert community) is that I picked up a used Total Chaos Gen-2 kit. I need to work out the shock & coil spring set-up, so I'll be searching for past posts and write-ups to see what worked for others with the same sort of set-up.
I look forward to being an active member on the site! Happy trails!
