    Re: Knee Brace for Riding

Question: Do these CTI or * Braces fit under or over the pant legs?

I've always worn them under. Never tried over. I don't think they would fit really well over the top. I have a legging I wear under them to keep from irritating my skin.

    Re: Knee Brace for Riding

CTI's you always wear directly on the knee. They give you knee socks or knee underwear (don't know how to better describe it...) that you can wear with them, but the braces are fitted and hand made to fit directly. If you go over pants, the pant material would be too thick to give you the proper fit. The brace needs to be snug on the knee.

trentk, check with your insurance and see how much they will pay on a prescription brace. My insurance is good, they payed all for the braces I got, I use Donjoy under my pants. Donjoy guarantees you will not tear an ACL with their brace or the op is free.

Yes they are, but they are custom fit, not off the shelf. I have had both ACL's replaced, I can ride and walk around all day without them bothering me.

Just a warning about not getting torn ACL repaired..... I torn ACL and waited 2-3 years (for insurance reasons) to get repaired. In that time, I hyperextended 4-5 times, once big time (like a lightning strike!) and that damaged my cartilage.... now I am in my 50s and have chronic knee pain and cannot run because of damage to my joint during those 2-3 years with a deficient ACL. Just my experience... good luck to one and all.

    Re: Knee Brace for Riding

Damn CTi is an awesome company. I left my dr's office last Monday morning with my brace prescription, I called the number on CTi's website, they gave me a local rep to call. By lunch I had an appt setup for therep to come to my office to take all my measurements for the brace the next day. The rep who came to take my measurements was very professional and helpful and he said they were rushing my order through to get my brace to me in time for the SS300. Later that day another person called to tell me my insurance approved the brace. Then 7 days later I get a call that my brace is here and they need to come see me to fit it on and do the consultation. The brace fits awesome, I first called them on Monday and I had the custom brace in my hands 10 days later and everyone was extremely nice and helpful.

I got the motocross kit that comes with 2 different leg sleeves, the knee cap cover and covers for the hinges so your pants don't get torn up.

I went to a local store to try on the asterisk braces, the pre 2012 model that was sized for my knee wouldn't go around my calve and the 2012 model seemed to fit better but the tightening wires seemed to dig into my skin a bit. I am sure they woulda been fine but I am happy my insurance covered the CTi brace.

    Re: Knee Brace for Riding

Glad you got those. I was advised to wear my CTi's if I do anything more than mow the lawn, and I have...and never had another knee injury to this date since I've been using them.
It's also a good idea to use the shims at the hinges that stop your leg just shy from full extension (you will walk with a slight limp in the pits like most MX racers do) but this will further prevent hyperextension (but don't limit your leg extensions working out, walking, etc.). If a bike or something else lands on your leg with your leg extended (like it did in my case) and your braces are set for full range of extension, the straps can give just enough to stretch or tear your ACL.

In the end, even if you have to pay for your own braces, they are just as important as your helmet and are a fraction of the cost of reconstructive knee surgery.
