Re: CJR 2012 : Underdog vs TopDog

And, while it does seem to work out well, in hindsight our suspension was just not set-up properly for the terrain: the front was just too stiff and back was loose! We had the leaf springs arched way too much and shackle angles were not ideal, also the truck was over sprung particularly at the front....

    The 100mph Run!

Well almost, top speed was around 95mph.... Quite scary in hindsight, seemed to work well at the time

That looked like fun alright, but those rock hard ruts looked a little scary for sure. Hate to get a tire caught in one at the wrong time.

Pulled together some of the clips and ran them in slow motion. My basic conclusion was that it was oversprung at the front and perhaps overdamped at the back with the rebound being too slow. Overall there is very limited wheel travel on the video, and I am not exactly sure why but probably because its heavily oversprung...... Views would be helpful here with the next season approaching fast and we plan on just making spring rate changes along with better shocks and giving it another go

Went for a IJC sand run event and ran with the rear diff locked for the first time. Lots of understeer ( key suspects : raised front, longer shackles with negative caster, rear locked) but great fun nevertheless. A short clip from the event:

Old man Emu makes some very good stuff for land cruisers and they have distributors all over the globe.

    I can't believe I didn't notice your post sooner.

I raced an fj40 in this years Mexican 1000. In the tradition of my dad's car I tried to make it as stock as possible. 2f engine, old man emu dakkar leaf springs, single shocks and 31" tires. I wish the tires had been taller and wider. I did put in power steering, disc brakes on the front and back and I really appreciated the comfy mastercraft seats.

The car was really fun and ran pretty well, but it had a novice driver (me) and was slow. The top speed on and off the road was 75mph. Your 100mph run looked pretty great. I'll take some pointers from this thread for next years race.

    here's a bit on the build/race

Great to read your post! Would be lovely to see some in car videos from that Go-pro upfront!
Big tires on a light FJ40 cut both ways and add more unsprung weight to an already unbalanced situation, especially in our case with the very light V8 upfront!
Thanks for posting and look forward to hearing more!
