Don Demeny - TORC Red Bud Race Report
Demeny Starts Strong with Second Place @ Red Bud
Abrams, WI (June 2, 2011) - The week leading up to tbe Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL was very hectic for Demeny Racing, but all the hard work paid off as the Nsight Telservices, Cellcom, Splash, BFGoodrich, Chrysler World Ram Truck made history at Red Bud MX. The yellow #885 was the first RAM truck to finish on the podium during the 2011 TORC Series race season.
The Saturday before the TORC event in Buchanan, Michigan, Don Demeny and his team participated in the MORR Sportsman Test Day at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway. The term participation is used loosely as the Nsight Telservices, Chrysler World Ram Truck failed to make a complete lap before Demeny would roll the truck, damaging the front suspension and most of the body panels. Don and crew quickly packed up and headed back to Abrams to beginning repairing the damage later that same day.
After four days of serious thrashing, the RAM truck was loaded into the trailer and the team headed for southwest Michigan. When Demeny Racing arrived, most wondered if there would be any short-course racing on Memorial Day weekend. The layout was very technical and challenging as the one mile track wound its way through a natural valley that cut through the Red Bud MX Park. The area experienced heavy rains much of the week, which made the track almost unusable. Somehow the TORC track crew pushed and plowed the mud from most of the track allowing the Sportsman drivers to begin their race season just before twelve noon.
The thirteen Super Stock Trucks lined up side by side, seven rows deep for the rolling start. The yellow RAM truck was starting from the third row. When the green flag waved to begin the twelve-lap event, Demeny made a few bold moves to get into podium contention by the end of the second lap. Just before the halfway point mandatory yellow, Demeny moved into second place. Quickly the distance between first place truck and Demeny disappeared thanks to the mandatory caution. It gave the “Mayor of Abrams” a serious shot at the win. The second half of the race was a knock down drag out war, as Demeny tried everything he could to get around the first place truck of Brent Smith. Smith answered Demeny’s every move, and when the checkered flag waved Smith took the win, with Don Demeny right behind in second.
“Man I tried everything I could,” commented Don Demeny. “If I could have just gotten a fender in front of Smith I could have grabbed the lead. Just after the mandatory yellow I bent something in the front end that made both front tires point to the outside. This really cost me some speed running down the Orchard back straightaway. Finishing second is a great way to start for the quest to win the Super Stock Truck Championship.”
Later in Saturday’s race program heavy rain came through the area ending the day early as three different classes were unable to run.
When Sunday morning arrived the overnight rains delayed the race program, as the track crew needed extra time to get the track race ready. Unfortunately, after the three PRO classes ran, a violent thunderstorm came through the area ending the weekend for the Sportsman competitors.
The cancelled round of racing allowed Demeny Racing to head home slightly earlier than expected and with a RAM race truck in very good condition. This allowed the team to participate in the Oconto Falls, Wisconsin Memorial Day Parade.
“It was unfortunate we couldn’t get a chance to go racing on Sunday,” remarked Don Demeny. “It was great to see such large crowds both days at Red Bud. The early trip home allowed us to put our Nsight Telservices, Cellcom, Splash, BFGoodrich, Chrysler World Ram Truck and all of our great sponsors in front of another large crowd in a Memorial Day parade back home.”
TORC and MORR officials are currently working rescheduling the cancelled round of racing.
