    Alternator Help

We need help with an alternator, we plan to get a new truck out the MORE race in 2 weeks but are having a problem

We have a CS144 alt in the truck, it has the battery post and the 4 wire clip(PLIS) We are having difficulty getting the alternator to come on and stay on. We have the S lead hooked up tho the back of the alt on the battery terminal, and the L lead hooked up to a resistor which takes power from the buss bar. We have tried hooking up the I lead to the ignition and have tried switching the P and I connections.

If you interrupt the L lead while running it kicks on and then back off, if you interrupt the circuit above about 3k rpm it kicks on and stays on. It behaves the same no matter how the I and L leads are connected.

Alt pully is a stock 6 groove roughly 2 in diamater. Engine idle is over 2k not in gear. It seams there are nearly as many explanations as alternators. This was built for 250 amps and I can no longer get ahold of who built it, any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks
    Don

    Re: Alternator Help

On the cs130, 144, Etc, alt the best way is to use the ignition in series with a resistor (85-300 ohm , 3 watt) into pin b on the connector. We have done thousands of harnesses with this setup. Questions? give me a call, Steve Humphrey 909 910 386

The belt on that alt will start slipping around 160-180 amps. A six rib belt can't support more than that.

    These links may help you.

    Re: Alternator Help

Turns out it was belt slipage, a new mounting setup and we are good to go. We now have 40%+ belt contact and full power. Thanks all. We missed the night race but plan to be out in Sept.
