Great find! I saw that rig run -- and win! -- at the 1978 Coors Colorado Off Road Championship. Had a slightly different paint job then -- a big white stripe down the side. The paint job that's on it now appeared in 1979. From the looks of this photo, it's got a non-original nerf bar on the front, and the door bars look more extensive than what existed in 1978. I do have a brief video clip from that Colorado race -- it's on Super 8 and I'm hoping to get it and tons of other 1970s racing footage digitized soon so I can post it. Balch runs his own construction company in California -- he's on the web, and he'd be a great resource for you.
Just a quick follow-up: My uncle, Jim Vaughan, raced a Class 3 CJ-5 from 1976 to 1980. He ran a narrowed Dana 44 up front out of a Scout. At the 1977 Mint 400, my uncle broke a fuel line and experienced a pretty big fire. A while later, after the Jeep was on the trailer, Balch rushed up to my uncle. "That thing got a Scout front end in it?" Told it did, he asked if he could borrow the U bolts -- he'd broken one or two and needed replacements. My uncle said "help yourself." So who knows ... maybe the front U bolts on that rig you have began life on my uncle's CJ-5.
Thanks for the great info. I a 16mm film from the Off Road World championship race that Sherman won that sent to me. I just got it back from getting it transfered to DVD . I will see about post some of it up at some point soon. As for the Formula PCV tire size, 12-15 LT, I will be looking for 2 more of them later.
