J Prich are you talking about scout parts or race parts? For Scout stuff I go to Mr. Scout , IH only North or Super Scout Specialist. I'm just getting into the race part of thing so I'm not much help there.

Come to the Bee next year and It should be there in a lot better condition than now. I am going to try and make the Sierra Fall Rallye in October with it. We'll see. A lot to do and little time to do it in and running out of money fast.

Great find! I saw that rig run -- and win! -- at the 1978 Coors Colorado Off Road Championship. Had a slightly different paint job then -- a big white stripe down the side. The paint job that's on it now appeared in 1979. From the looks of this photo, it's got a non-original nerf bar on the front, and the door bars look more extensive than what existed in 1978. I do have a brief video clip from that Colorado race -- it's on Super 8 and I'm hoping to get it and tons of other 1970s racing footage digitized soon so I can post it. Balch runs his own construction company in California -- he's on the web, and he'd be a great resource for you.
oh boy! cant wait to see that footage, i really love vintage off road on film
Thanks for the great info. I a 16mm film from the Off Road World championship race that Sherman won that sent to me. I just got it back from getting it transferred to DVD . I will see about post some of it up at some point soon. As for the Formula PCV tire size, 12-15 LT, I will be looking for 2 more of them later.
Thanks Class3 for scaning that.
I actually have that on my display that I made up for the Scout. I just never had it scaned.
This is a pic from March 1979 Four Wheeler that shows Balch in the Baja 1000, he took 3rd.
It was pretty cool to find this thread. I am friend of Sherman's son, Shane, and forwarded it to him. Shane said it was really cool to see the old scout again!
When I die, stuff me full of candy and hit me with a stick!
Here's a pretty cool Desert Dog ad from early 1977 featuring Sherman on the left. The picture was probably taken at the '76 Baja 1000, which would have been Sherman's last in his CJ-5 before switching to the Scout.
AGREED!! That brings back memories. I was 10 in 1979. I remember going to Riverside like it was yesterday. I don't think my family missed too many races there until it closed in 1988 and I got to race the last one on a quad.
I was up on the Rubicon trail with my dad in his Burro buggy in the late 60s or early 70s and a purple colored jeep came up behind us going up Cadillac Hill, it had Archer Bros painted on side of it. We talked with the driver and it was Sherman Balch. In the early years he was sponsored by Archer Bros. I think they were in Hayward, CA.
