I was up on the Rubicon trail with my dad in his Burro buggy in the late 60s or early 70s and a purple colored jeep came up behind us going up Cadillac Hill, it had Archer Bros painted on side of it. We talked with the driver and it was Sherman Balch. In the early years he was sponsored by Archer Bros. I think they were in Hayward, CA.
Your correct about Archer Bros. Art and Garner Archer were in the jeep parts business out of Hayward cal. When I met Sherman in the early 70"s he was driving a Cj 5 with Archer Bros name on it.Art would ride with Sherman in the desert races, carried a baseball bat to slow Sherman down.I was in stagging @ San Felipe in 1990 or 91 and Sherman walked up to say hello, haven't seen him since. The guy had HEUVOS.On another note at the Silverbird Race of champions 1978 Sherman was giving Rod Hall a run for the money, they rubbed alot of paint then they both broke on same corner, I thought Fricker was going to do some real damage as the top of Sherman's head was about even with Frickers chest, he was a tad bit unhappy with Sherman's driving style.

As I recall the event, Fricker had Sherman's throat in his right hand and his helmet by the strap in his left hand and were it not for quick action from Hall and a couple corner workers,Sherman would have ended up even shorter !! Dang that race was FUN !!

Looks like it is going on the market soon. Seems every time I get started with a realy cool project life kicks me in the butt. Work has slowed down way to much to justify keeping it.
soo my grandfather vinton hutchings my uncles shane and christopher(troy) hutchings and my dad Timothy cardona all worked on sherman balch's race team im not sure what years but my grandpas best friend was russ kirpatrick who was a codriver for sherman at some point. russ retired to a little town called calpine in northern california where my grandparents lived up untill this past year...my dad told me stories about sherman taking him for a ride in a nissan 720 race truck, which sherman jumped over a fence lol there was a leftover truck that my uncle shane raced after the season had ended and my grandma had the truck up untill this last year...my grandpa converted it to a snowplow and when my grandma sold the hopuse it stayed there despite my begging...the new owners son has supposedly fixed it up and is planning to race in a vintage league. hope this is interesting at least!
