Another Baja 500 Story..
First off just want to thank Klaus for going around with us on race day. His prerunning 2 weeks before paid off and we found some good photo and video spots. Even if we got crappy shots having Klaus crammed in with you for 14 hours is always a good time lol. LECHE!!!
This was the first Baja race for myself, Scott (Motoxscott), and Steve (HB150/XYZ) so we really didn't know what to expect. We always heard from friends how Mexico races are the best, and now we know why. The locals down there are great (got some great pictures), had no problems with policia, and just the atmosphere on race weekend is really something thats hard to explain.
We got there on friday in time for contingency to meet up with Fish and Ryan. Fish asked us "Whats something that costs $1100 that would be fun as hell to do? We're entering....The Piece!" As everyone in our group makes fun of them for being dumb they go off to enter and we check out tech. Contingency in Mexico is also differnent then say Primm, or Laughlin. Same booths, a lot more people, mostly locals. We walked around for a little while, and when The Piece started coming through we walked the truck around with him. It was awesome seeing little kids run up to him for autographs. Naturally he signed them all "Fishdood #1549". waj!
After tech we all hopped on the back of The Piece to go prep it for race day. Going down the highway at 60 on the bedcage is fun lol. We all worked for a few hours, I tightend the lugs, which was the most crucial part of the prep. No flats right? That was all me... After that we went and ate an awesome dinner, went and watched soem 200 pound chicks grind old dudes, then headed back to the hotel.
Saturday morning we woke up at about 6:30am, packed up and headed down to our first spot. I think it was about mile 80 or so, the section of the course that is on the beach where it is all rocks are. There was a little lip a little ways that Klaus found so we sat there for about an hour till Ragland came by. We figured we had about an hour there before we had to leave in order to catch them again at our next stop. It was a good spot, it was overcast on the beach but made for some great background. As we were leaving we saw a pack of 3 Class 10's coming down, with the middle car right on the rear of the front car, and nerfing it along the rocky section, spinning it about 30-40 degrees. The third car in the back just watched and passed both of them, awesome action, just too bad it was as we were getting in our trucks lol.
We then headed across the dirt road to Vally T. That was a fun drive with me, Steve, Scott, Rhiannon, and Klaus all crammed in his F-150 with three seats lol. For the record Klaus farted on my foot and German farts smell the worse. There was another spot that Klaus spotted prerunning and again it turned out to be a great spot. We got there early enough to catch the leaders again and were there for a few hours.
We decided to take off and head up to Ojos to catch people jumping the other way. Chris Wilson put on a show! He launched off that thing wide open and landed way on the bottom. We saw the Tantum Class 1 car roll (naturally no one got it on tape), about 25-30 locals ran to them, flipped them back over, directed traffic for them, got their light bar back on the car, and got them going, awesome site to see. One local got a broken HID for a sovenier and hopped on the back of the car and held it up proud. Something that we here would throw away they keep has lost treasure. Puts things in perspective for you. We hung out there for a few hours, hung out with the locals. Klaus is a rockstar in Mexico, there were locals that new him from RDC and Dezert People without ever meeting him before. "Are you guys the Dezert People guys?"
After that we headed up to the Finish line to watch some people finish. Saw PCI come in, among a few others. We were beat so we headed back to the hotel to shower and relax. Finally got in around 10pm. The whole time we never really heard on the status of Fish, but we knew he was going to get in late. We crashed at 12, and woke up at about 1 to the burly exhaust leak on The Piece. Awesome to see our friend conquer the 500. Who knew that little kid on RDC who posts videos after each desert trip and talks more trash then a pro wrestler would be celebrating a class win?
Overall it was an awesome experiance, and can't wait for the 1000! So many good times with friends, so many memories to share for a long time. I'm leaving out a lot, but this was by far one of the bets trips in a long time. Good friends, good food, great race, and even better pictures
