INJURY REPORT - Baja 500
The #9x entry, ridden at the time by Mike Childress (Honda 650) was involved in a freak accident with Jason Dempsey, brother of Chuck Dempsey (X-Rs Only) at Ojos Negros, during the Baja 500. It seems that coming out of the dirt road onto the pavement, Childress flew off a bump and as he settled down from a wheeley, Jason was directly in front of him flagging him down. They both turned the same direction to avoid each other but unfortunately a nasty impact occurred. Jason was flown out of Ojos with apparently a broken leg, although at the time it looked really bad. He was unconscious, but later came to and is now resting at Sharps Memorial in San Diego.
Childress was devastated after the accident, especially since Jason also works at XRs Only with Childress and decided to quit there with 35 miles to go. But the crowd and people around him, realizing that it was not his fault, encouraged him to suit-up again and finish. After about 30 minutes, he put his helmet on and goggles and gloves and putted to the finish, where the team wound up as the 3rd overall bike. The team had been in a dog fight all day and at times taking the physical lead until a tire exploded after Mike's Sky Rancho.
Why was Jason in front of the bike? Well it seems that Childress sent word ahead that he would not be stopping at the Ojos Pit but nobody told Jason who had been helping the team all day long. So Jason upon seeing the bike coming in started to wave him down.
It was truly an unfortunate accident but we're happy to report that Jason will be getting better. A leg operation was performed Sunday and he will be at Sharps for a couple of weeks. CAT scans and other test wre negative.
I spoke to Gene Dempsey, Jason's and Chuck's dad and he said that it will be a few days before Jason can take calls, but everyone is asked to say a prayer for him for a quick recovery.

Thanks for reporting that Lou. Had heard some rumors about that and glad to hear that they are ok.
