Im gonna stick my neck out (pun intended) and guarantee that the cars from yester year don't cover the same ground at even close to the same speed that we do now. That goes for any class. Period.
If you discredit their abilities, im not sure what to say other than your calling engineers at much more advanced levels of motorsports ill informed. But im sure you've got plenty pieces of paper on your wall saying that you know better than they do, and your real world class 9 or 11 experience superceeds their thousands of lab test hours and doctorate degrees right? Do you wear a Snell approved helmet? Of course you do, its mandated. Those same "know it alls" work with the idiots that created a saetg device that possibly could have saved dale earnhardts life in a very "unviolent" typical run of the mill accident.

Same can be said about seat belts.. Lots of people have walked away w/out wearing a seat belt. What about condoms? Lots of people have not used them, and don't have AIDS.. haha.. My ability to walk is worth the measely $650, alot cheaper than a wheelchair & physical therapy..

I have not read this whole thread seems like a big argument. But raced a few races with no neck restraint. After races i was very sore. I bought a defender neck brace shortly after and wow it was amazing. Amazing how it helps. We he slam into holes and your neck doesnt fly all over the place. I strongly urge everyone to race with one.

You obviously no nothing about me but being the speed demon that you must be I think you need to check average speeds and times for Baja. Even though some of the roads and trails are different the average speeds have hardly changed. Check it yourself. I am not trying to discredit anyone, but unless there has been a rash of injuries in this sport than none have herd of I can see no reason to mandate it. I am sure there are some really smart people that would say never get in the car to begin with. You said it yourself, could possibly have saved him. Mandating it will push some racers elswhere, By the way I would bet large dough a Ivan Stewart in a 70s Modern motors Chenowith would have blown the doors off your trophy lite anywhere, everytime to say the speeds were slow is just ignorant. The speeds were there with so much more chance of getting hurt because of the cars. Should we bubble wrap ourselfs before getting in?? I feel safe the way it is . End
37th year and still love it!!

Shouldn't one death (neck injury at Primm 300) be enough to make a change? Why do we have to wait for the next one, or one after that?

Re: Head and Neck restraints...mandatory?
Your neck your choice.
I do recomend one!!!!!!!!
Race with out one, then raced with an R3. My neck was 90% less sore wearing the R3.
The cost of a neck restraint, yes its pricE but in the event you do crash, HOW MUCH IS YOUR NECK WORTH????
Way more than than the cost of one! At least that was my determining factor.

Re: Head and Neck restraints...mandatory?
I don't know why people these days try to mandate every little thing. If you want to wear one, then wear one. Nobody cares or tries to stop you. Why do some think they are smart enough to make decisions for others? I personally want to buy a HNR, but I would never demand that someone else has to. They are responsible for their safety, and I am responsible for mine. End of story.
Hell, if we really want to start mandating every little thing, why don't we have certified prep guys with mandatory prep log hours with official log books for every vehicle. At least that way we can make sure the innocent spectators with no safety equip. don't have loose parts coming off race cars towards them. Then again, we could mandate spectators wear helmets and fire suits just in case. That way we can drive the cost up even more and really kill the sport.
Safety is a never ending subject, there will always be one more safety item to make it safer. Life is full of risks, no matter how much safety chit is mandated, people still get hurt. I race in the desert. It is dangerous. I like it anyway.
If I wanted to eliminate possible injury completely, I would sit at home and watch Dezert People videos strokin myself..... or post more on RDC.
Those willing to trade freedom for security, deserve neither.

SOOOOOOO.... a class 1 from 1985 with the best beam package you can throw at it with the Kurnut shocks that were the best in the business are going to hang with a new Jimco with 20+" of reliable travel???? I think not, maybe on certain days, certain courses, and with a lot of luck. Roads were smoother then, horsepower was less and the shocks and tires were not there either. I know your the god father of slow, but I lost ALL respect for YOU when you said your class 11 did 80mph at the same night race where we BLEW the doors off of you and your badarse class 11 in our second race in TrophyLite. But we should have so its an apples to oranges comparison.
Ivan Stewart was the man, but his super duper PPI truck couldnt hang with trucks from the 90's anymore, so he had to put more power to it. Never did make it back to the top did he?
Mandating HNR's is up to a promoter, and RDC isnt going to make up their minds. But to say that they are not needed is ignorant. Sorry your old ways have succumbed to the new generation of racers, we have to protect ourselves in a new fashion. And if promoters don't mandate safety devices, their insurance providers will soon enough. And obviously YOU wont be racing with them.
