small chase truck welder
What do you guys use for a small welder for a chase truck ? a gas powered rig would be nice for having 110 volts available for grinders/lights etc.

Re: small chase truck welder
i use a honda EU 3000 gen and a small craftsman gasless wire feed.
i mounted the generator on the rack and the welder is strapped down under neath so i can grab and move it. i made a 15ft extension cable using 220v cable, to be sure it will handle anything.

the welder works good for just about anything on my race truck, i just keep a MAP gas torch and turn welder up, and wire speed slow to make sure it penetrates well.

Whatever you do, run flux core wire. So you can weld in the wind. Also restrain the wire spool so it can't unwind on the washboard roads.. A minimum 3000 watt generator, and I suggest a Miller 140.. But, we like the Ready Welder that runs off of (2) 12 volt batteries (wired for 24 volts), and a 750 watt power inverter.. This setup takes less space and may be lighter depending on generator. As 2 optimas weigh 50lbs each. We mounted them in an aluminum box w/quick connect plug that comes with the Ready Welder (which welds 3/4" thick btw on 24 volts, not maxed @ 3/16"-1/4")..
SE VENDE: 6ft 16 ga. Pro-former sheet metal brake. Foddrill 4-seat pre-runner chassis. PM for details.. Dave Bost, Dust Bros Motorsports #1050

those ready welders look like the bomb. even when you're not chasing and just out for the weekend.

Re: small chase truck welder
Thanks guys I will check out these ideas. I have also found a multiquip gen/welder thats pretty small and less than 120 pounds. I am a stick welder by trade so a handfull of 3/32 and 1/8 can do most anything.

Re: small chase truck welder
I have had a Hobart Trek 180 for the last couple of years, it is self contained, battery powered 180 amp unit. I use it in my shop as well as taking it with. It won't supply 115V, but it will charge off a 400 watt inverter from the truck. I've been very happy with it. Comes in a hard carry case with an attached pouch for leads.
