Today SCORE opened the off-road racing season with round 1 in Laughlin.

This race course is known for its harshness despite the very short laps. Things started out unscheduled for Jimmy Knuckles and Robby Pierce as they both yard sales after one of the large and high speed jumps alongside the Laughlin High School.

All drivers and co-drievrs are reported ok.

Also noteworthy is one incident involving Trophy Truck #16 of Cameron Steele. The transmission let go and exploded shooting parts into the driver compartment and injuring co-driver Cody Stuart. Cody was sent via helicopter into a Las Vegas hospital for treatment. To follow Cody’s recovery check our forum discussions HERE.

Today Off-Road Racing lost two of their best in a fatal plane crash.

Rick and his brother Jeff Huseman were returning home from Las Vegas in a small aircraft to Corona, CA when their plane crashed around Barstow, CA. Rick, Jeff and another 3rd person did not survive the accident.

The off-road community has suffered a huge loss and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

1. How did you get started racing off-road?

HDRA (High Desert Racing Association) was officially announced as a new race series on Friday the 17th at the Dezert People 9 premier at Roger Norman’s race shop. Many questions were asked and Race-Dezert asked CFO Ken Flippin a few of the common questions.

Who is HDRA? 

Ken Flippin CFO, and Robert Gross President.  Roger Norman has no title and does not get a salary.

Why are the entry fees higher than SNORE? Will they always be this price? Never in history have entry fees gone down before.

Initial fees reflect immense start-up costs. The HDRA mission plan is to greatly reduce or eliminate entry fees with sponsorship support, and hopefully in at some point in the future racers will only be paying insurance and membership fees.
Fees are always tricky; you need to make enough to cover hard costs, but not enough to gouge the racer. We are kicking around the idea of sponsor monies subsidizing the HDRA racer fees. Basically the cost goes down to the racer while HDRA receives its full projected income.

Will there be bikes, quads, and utv classes in HDRA?

Still deciding. It is intriguing to think about non caged racers.

What rulebook will HDRA be using? Any annual inspections that cost $?

A modified SCORE/SNORE rule book with no inspections at this point

Who are the sponsors already signed up for the series?

Contracts are being drawn now but I cannot say yet. Multiple big names.

How will points work? How will payback work?

Undecided at this time.

Does HDRA have any permits approved already?

Permit apps are in for two races with no negatives from BLM yet. The third is on the motorplex in Reno so no permits are needed.

What does the “reality tv” coverage actually consist of? What classes will it feature?

There are two designs being pitched. Off road hero which is kind of a big brother style, “someone gets eliminated every week” thing until the winner is decided and they get to drive Roger’s 800 hp Unlimited Truck in a HDRA race. The other we cannot elaborate on just yet.

Any interest in doing races in Mexico?

We have been approached about doing NORRA initially and some cross-promotional ideas with CODE.

Will there be bleachers or a spectator area at races?

Yes

What will medical/safety staff consist of at races?

That will vary from race to race depending on type of event. Complete details are written into all our Safety Management Plans that exist whether BLM requires one or not. We like Rick and the Tri Star team and others have submitted proposals to Roger.

Will head and neck restraints be made mandatory?

We are leaning toward that requirement. Virtually every major race sanctioning body now requires their use. Very soon it may be a requirement in order to obtain event coverage from insurers.

What timing system will be used?

Still searching / comparable to BITD & SNORE. System selected will have to embrace leading edge technology, be flexible and have expansion capabilities.

Who bought the Mint 400 name?

What will the media policy be? Fees? What access will they be given? Any requirements?

Media is a huge priority with HDRA. Access to race tracks and racers is paramount. We are looking
at keeping the cell phone camera guy completely away from the professionals who get it done to get it into the mainstream. And more to come later on this….

Crandon laid under a thick cloud of rain this morning and rumors of a cancellation where floating around, but mother nature seems to be a race fan and let the sun out throughout most of the day.

PROLITE

Today’s Prolite race started out similar to yesterday’s. Andrew Caddell right away stole the lead and never gave it away for the remainder of the race. Then the usual suspects lined up for battle.  Brad Lovell, Sam Hubinette, Brian Deegan, Schaun Morris, CJ Greaves and Casey Currie.

Not much changed in the positions until right after the mandatory yellow flag when Deegan inched himself from 5th to 4th, 3rd and then 2^nd place. The last 2 laps then had every fan on their feet watching Deegan chipping away on Caddell for the win, but all he could get was fast lap while trying.

PRO2

Pro2  made for an interesting race until the checkered flag dropped.  Jeff Kincaid had the hole-shot out of the infamous Crandon turn 1 and he then defended it all the way until his truck let him down with some mechanical problems late in the race.

After Kincaid we had Bryce Menzies running up front followed by Rob McCachren then Chad Hord and Marty Hart. They where running hard with their Rev limiter kicking in on the straights yet maintaining huge gaps in between each other.

Right before the yellow flag Rob McCachren pulled over just to get passed by the entire field due to a failing drive shaft.

At the end it was Bryce Menzies, Chad Hord and Marty Hart on the podium

PRO4

The Pro4 race was again the most exciting one of the three races we are reporting on. Johnny Greaves ran away with a strong lead early on and it looked like it was his to keep, but yesterday’s winner Adrian Cenni was drilling on Ricky Johnson for 2^nd place and ultimately for the win. The crowd was on their feet and when he ultimately passed Johnson and Greaves everyone went crazy rooting for the racer from New York.

The weather took a turn for the worse half way through the race with massive downpours just moments after the checkered flag.

Even long after the race in the local restaurants in town, everyone relived their favorite moment of that Pro4 race.

Crandon Labor Day started out like every day with the usual Downtown exhibition and parade to the nearby race track facilities. The weather was the unpredictable Wisconsin type that brought in plenty of rain in the morning but cleared up into a partially overcast afternoon.

Todays event was unique since Friday was a makeup round from the June/Sprint Crandon race that was rained out while Saturday and Sunday will be the regular scheduled rounds.

ProLite

Caddell lead the entire race, CJ Greaves looked good until he blew up before the yellow flag and Brad Lovell finished 2^nd while Casey Currie took 3 place.

Pro4

This was the more exciting race of the day despite the low entry of 9 competitors. Early on into the race Adrian ran away with the lead to never give it up again. The battle was between Greaves, Johnson and Douglas for 2^nd and 3^rd place. Jenkins got into each other a little bit sending Jenkins off track past the finish line.

Pro2

Very soon after the green flag dropped a single file formed that didn’t change order much until the end. In fact the Jeff Kincaid the won the race with multiple car lengths behind him.

If you are the blood thirsty type of fan that hopes for spectacular crashes then your meets where not met at todays racing in Crandon.

PRO4

Today’s Pro4 race was almost a carbon copy of Saturday and Friday’s races with the addition of rain half-way through the race.  Adrian Cenni killed it again and by lap 2 he was unstoppable; running so far in front of the pack that you would think he is in another faster class.  He wound up winning the race without a challenge.

The two rivals, Ricky Johnson and Johnny Greaves both ran into engine problems, Johnson’s transmission began to smoke early in the race, while Greaves got tangled up and was forced to limp around the track collecting points for the TORC championship.

Half-way through the race the rain kicked in, turning the track into a slippery slope.  Speeds went noticeably down as everyone tried not to slide off track while defending their position.

At the end it was Mark Jenkins in 2nd place followed by Steve Barlow.

PRO2

The Pro2 race was a straight up mess.  Heavy rain delayed the start by over one hour over the scheduled time while track officials tried to push the heavy mud away.  Eventually they went green and Scott Taylor held the lead throughout most of the race until he spun-out and lost his podium position. Due to the mud and rain, speeds were a lot lower than what we’re used to for this class, plus they were covered in mud, making it impossible to identify the trucks. When it was all said and done, Bryce Menzies repeated his previous day’s win followed by Mike Oberg and Rob MacCachren.

PROLITE

Brian Deegan continued where he left off on Saturday.  Up front.  First RJ Anderson had the hole-shot out of turn one, but couldn’t hold on and wound up with a 4^th place finish.  CJ Greaves ran in the front of the pack but after he went too wide in the gravel pit turn he fell from 3^rd towards the back.  Andrew Caddell was fast but only fast enough for 2^nd place.  Brad Lovell finished again on the podium with a solid 3^rd place.  In his only second year of racing short course, the rock crawler by heart made it to the podium all three days.  Deegan took the win in his new V8 making his return to Crandon triumphant.

AMSOIL CUP

The weekend’s highlight was the Amsoil Cup where the Pro2’s had a 20-second head-start over the Pro4’s for no less than $27,500 in prize money, the traveling trophy, and bragging rights to be the baddest driver of them all.

All bets where set on Adrian Cenni to conclude the weekend with 4 of 4 wins, but after lap 2 his early lead within the Pro4 pack changed when his front wheel drive failed and more things broke after a gnarly landing.

Since the Pro2’s started ahead for a Pro4′s to win they had to get around the Pro2’s entered. Chad Hord in his Pro2 gave them hell and no one came even close to passing him for a solid win in the Amsoil Cup.  It was only the third time in history that a Pro2 has won the cup.

Kyle LeDuc ran up front for a long time but after some fuel pickup issues he fell back all the way to the back but managed to finish 4^th.

Scott Douglas and Johnny Greaves ran at a steady pace the entire time without any major position changes. Good enough for 2^nd and 3^rd place.

In closing, this was a very exciting Crandon weekend but it’s unfortunate that politics between the two race series prevents a full house of racing. The race fan loses when all of the top competitors are not on hand to race.

What’s your favorite racing memory?
It’s got to be the Borg-Warner Cups at Crandon. Those were the most gratifying and also the toughest races. Everybody goes all out and it get’s rough.

What’s your favorite race track?
Definitely Bark River. It’s got the speed of Crandon, but still is challenging with great obstacles like double-doubles. It’s a fast track, which I’m liking more and more lately. 100mph sideways in a pro-4 separates the men form the boys.

Any advice for anyone that wants to get into off-road racing?
Start small. Don’t worry about having all the big rigs and everything else. Concentrate on the racing and the cream always rises to the top. Keep pecking your way up the ladder and if you’re good you will get there.

Sunday’s racing was a brutal display of how difficult short-course racing can be, as few of the vehicles managed to finish.  On a hot windy day at Speedworld in Surprise, AZ,the track got dusty and slick which led to multiple accidents.  Here’s what happened:

Pro 4 - The Rick Huseman express just keeps on rolling, but at one point in this race it seemed that Huseman was actually human, capable of making mistakes.  The race began with Kyle LeDuc taking a sizeable lead for multiple laps before slowing down due to mechanical issues.  Huseman grabbed the lead, but made an uncharacteristic driving error in turn 4 and over-rotated the vehicle, allowing Adrian Cenni and Steve Barlow to pass.  Huseman was hot on their trail and Barlow made a critical error in turn 2 and flipped the car in spectacular fashion.  Fortunately, Barlow had a minor concussion, and went to the hospital for observation.  After the full-course stop, Huseman got the jump on Cenni and passed him.  Cenni was forced to pull over during the final lap with his own mechanical issues.
Amazingly of the fifteen vehicles that started the race, only Huseman finished the race under full-power.  Carl Renezeder, who finished second, ran most of the race at 3/4 speed as he had steering issues.  The true shocker came, when John Harrah wound up taking third place.  Harrah had been the slowest racer throughout the weekend, but much like the story of the Tortoise and the Hare, slow and steady wound up getting him on the podium this day.

Pro-Lite – This race came down to the wire as Brian Deegan and Chris Brandt battled it out until the very end.  Deegan had been leading the race wire-to-wire, before Brandt made his move on the last lap.  The two traded lines on the final lap multiple times, with Deegan finally besting Brandt on the last turn to take the checkered flag.  Meanwhile, Corey Sisler, RodrigoAmpudia and Cameron Steele fought hard for third place.  Sisler held on for third and got his second podium in a row.

Pro 2 - This race is really what short-course is all about.  There’s so much talent in the Pro 2 class, that anyone has a shot at the podum any given weekend.  The track was extremely slick for this race and very few of the vehicles survived with their body panels intact.  The exception was Rob MacCachren, who seems to raise his game in tough races, and if he grabs the lead, there’s no chance that anyone is going to grab it back from him.

Early on it appeared that we’d have a repeat from yesterday’s racing with Marty Hart and Rob Mac taking the lead, but Hart spun out on a turn and found himself in the middle of the pack.

MacCachren and Rodrigo Ampudia took a huge lead up to the mandatory caution, with major action for third as Jeremy McGrath, Robby Woods, Bryce Menzies and Rob Naughton were in a dog-fight.  After the restart, Ampudia got overly anxious trying to get past MacCachren and spun out in turn 2, sending him to the back of the field.

McGrath, Woods, and Menzies were now all in the podium hunt, and the three of them put on a great show.  In the end MacCachren was his usual steady self and took the win, while McGrath and Woods rounded out the top 3.  An exciting race that was a highlight to theweekend.

Now we can’t wait for rounds 5 and 6 at Glen Helen next month.

On a hot, cloudless day the track at Speedworld in Surprise, AZ offered multiple challenges for the drivers as they navigated their way from slick corners, mogul fields, and massive jumps.  Early in each race, the track would be muddy from the watering to keep the dust down.  As the races went on, the track got slicker and slicker with the lines being harder to find for a clean pass.  Here’s how the racing action went down:

Pro 4 – The unstoppable Rick Huseman keeps rolling through the competition.  At this rate, Lucas officials are going to have to put a restrictor plate on the #36 vehicle just to make the season interesting, otherwise the championship is going to be wrapped up by mid-season.  There was pretty good competition today as Johnny Greaves, Adrian Cenni and Rick Johnson managed to keep in front of Huseman for the first half of the race while Kyle LeDuc, who started 10th, rapidly picked his way through the pack as he threw down the fastest lap time of the day.  Eventually Greaves developed mechanical issues, and dropped back in the pack.  Cenni took the lead for several laps, but eventually cut a turn too tightly and Huseman and LeDuc managed to pass.  Once in the lead, Huseman seldom makes a mistake and he finished the race clean to take the win.

Pro Lite – The Pro Lite field has gotten deeper, and as they switch to allowing the V8 Pro Lite’s in the next round, even more racers will enter the fray.  Chris Brandt has been a man on a mission in Pro Lite after losing his title sponsor, he’s been driving with a chip on his shoulder.  Brandt quickly took the lead in this race and never relinquished it, as Brian Deegan and Corey Sisler tried, but could not make a move to get past Brandt.  It was a fairly uneventful race, until the end when Sisler managed to cross the finish line with his car on fire to hold on to third.  It was amusing to watch Sisler celebrate his third place finish, while the rescue crew rolled up to put the fire out.

Pro 2 – The best racing of the day took place in the cat-and-mouse game that Marty Hart and Rob MacCachren played  for numerous laps, as Rob Mac tried to move inside and outside to get around Hart.  The game went on lap after lap as Hart continually held of MacCachren.  There were several cautions and a full-course stop that slowed down the racing action and didn’t allow Hart to keep his momentum going.  After one restart, MacCachren finally passed Hart, as he had mechanical issues and finished the race a lap down.  Meanwhile Carl Renezeder ran consistently just off the lead pace to finish the race in second, while Brian Deegan who started in 9th picked his way through the field for a third place podium finish.

Wired Magazine reports, the Hot Wheel Toy Company is attempting to beat Johnny Greaves’ current 301 foot long jump world record during this year’s Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend.

You may remember our exclusive coverage of the current long jump in December of 2009 where Johnny Greaves jumped his Toyota Pro-2 301 feet.  In order to gain higher speeds faster and obviously to make for a more spectacular show they will use a 100 foot tall ramp.

Who is driving the Pro 2to set the new record is yet kept a secret by Hot Wheels.

What is the bigger news? Geiser Brothers building a new Trophy Truck or that entertainer Justin Bieber is entering off-road racing?

Justin Bieber has secretly followed off-road racing for a while now after his facebook friend, BJ Baldwin kept posting on his wall many race photos. “I eventually broke down and had to see what this off-raod racing is all about. I messaged BJ and he took me in his Trophy Truck around Dumont Dunes. I was hooked and the only rational thing to do is to get a Trophy Truck  by Geiser Brothers”

“I won’t have much time this year but after my world tour 2.0, the truck should be finished and I can begin practicing. Right now playing PS3′s Dirt2 is all I have to go by and I am sure the real thing is lot scarier.” Justin shared exclusively with us, “The guys at MTV have been very supportive, not right away, but now that they see the new angle of bringing style and reality shows to professional off-road racing they are on board 100%.”

SCORE and BITD in a joint effort today announced a new unique venue for 2012 replacing the 2012 Baja 1000.

2500 miles of racing through 2 US States, 2 Mexican States and crossing one International border is a first in US Off-Road history.

The 5 day event will be held in multiple stages with overnight rest in multiple host towns.

SCORE CEO Sal Fish is overly excited about the Reno to Cabo 2500 “It has been a life-long dream of mine to combine racing in Baja with racing in the US and now it’s finally happening. An unprecedented amount of cooperation was required with Nevada, Arizona and Mexican officials into the somewhat secret planing of this monster of a race.”

Never has an automotive race in North America crossed International borders before, and extra resources will be made available by the Department of Home Land Security to guaranty a smooth border transition during the race days.

The Mexicali Tourism Board played an integral role in hosting one of the stages and rest day of the Reno to Cabo 2500 in Mexicali “We always try to accommodate Off-Road racing in Mexicali..” Omar Dipp of the Mexiclai Toursim Office said “..now we can extend our generous hospitality to the Off-Road world. Mexicali as the capital of Baja California makes for the perfect place for such an event.”

Casey Folks, CEO of Best in the Desert series, is extremely thrilled about today’s announcement, “We have to give up the Blue Water Desert Challenge in October to make this happen, but it will give double back to the town of Parker by bringing the Reno to Cabo 2500 along. We typically don’t race in Mexico but with the experience and help of SCORE on our side we feel comfortable in undergoing this new adventure. I always try to be true to our racers and look out for the best possible way to organize races. This is just another example that we put the racers first.”

Racers will have the option to enroll with either of the two series for their points championship. The race will count as a triple points payout.

A preliminary outline of the event

Day 1: Reno, NV to Las Vegas, NV – party on Fremont Street
Day 2: Las Vegas, NV to Laughlin, NV to Parker, AZ – About 60% of the day will be driven on public Highway in transitional stages.
Day 3: Parker, AZ – Two loops on the traditional Parker 425 course and the transition to Mexicali, Mexico.
Day 4: Rest Day and Fan presentation in Mexicali. Teams will be allowed to service vehicles for 4 hours.
Day 5: Mexicali to Cabo San Lucas – No more highways transition stages and a run for the finish.

Lots of racers have confirmed full support and participation for the Reno to Cabo 2500 next year.

NASCAR racer and multiple Baja winner Robby Gordon commented “Forget Dakar. This is closer to home and I get to race in my much faster trophy truck even though it’s a multiple stage event like I enjoy so much in Dakar.”

Race legend Ivan “Ironman” Stewart will come back one final time to race behind the wheel “I wouldn’t want to miss this one for the world. You know I have raced anywhere there is dirt and have won them all, but the only way to win this one is to participate. Now I just have to purchase back all my racing stuff if I can find it…”
