I have been using GoPro’s since the HD version of the camera was released late 2009.  I had heard of many different new HD cameras on the market but never came across one I wanted to try until my friend Mike Koenig (class 6 racer out of Sacramento) told me about the Drift Innovations HD170 Stealth.  He had been using them for a few races and said it was the best camera he has used.  Talking with Mike about it convinced me it was about time to try something new.

I spoke with Drift Innovations and they sent me a HD170 Stealth camera to try along with the optional suction cup mount.  The camera comes with a couple of flat and curved helmet mounts as well.  Next step was to buy a 32gb SDHC card and then I headed north to the VORRA MasterPull USA 500 race.  I mounted the camera in Rick Massie’s Trophy Truck for the first test of my new onboard camera.

Drift Innovations HD170 Stealth

The camera has a standard 1/4” mount on the base which makes it easy to install since there are so many different mounting options for 1/4” mounts.  I already had a good roll cage mount that I bought from ORW so it was easy to set up.  The built in LCD screen makes it really easy to get the perfect view that you want to film.  And to make it even easier the lens rotates so you can put the camera in any position and rotate the lens where you need it to be.

The camera gets over 2 hours of battery life on a full charge so I started the camera about 10 minutes before the start of the race.  As luck would have it (for me anyway) the truck had to stop for a flat about 100 yards before a jump I was filming at on the third lap.  This was my opportunity to grab my spare battery and SDHC card and I swapped them out before they finished changing the flat.

After the race was over the camera was still exactly where I mounted it. (not the case with some other cameras and mounts) But I did notice that the lens had been rotated and not level any more.  After watching the footage you could see when the co-driver wiped the lens it slightly rotated it each time.  After doing that many times throughout the race it had turned about 40 degrees.  He must have been pressing really hard when wiping it because there is allot of tension in the lens when you rotate it.  You can correct this in editing programs but you have to zoom in to crop out the black corners which lowers the resolution.

Next up was the SNORE Midnight race at Primm.  This was the perfect chance to test it out at night.  I set the camera to night mode and ran it in Wayne Lugo’s 1450 truck for a race.  The footage came out good overall.  The dash lights and GPS had a slight blur but the view through the windshield opening looked to be more in focus.  Overall it films good quality night footage with not much noise that you would see in other cameras at night.

The third time I got to use the camera was during a test with Jason Rodriguez and his new 7200 truck.  I mounted it in about 3 different suspension locations and got some great footage for Dezert People 9.  The LCD screen made a huge difference while setting up the perfect angle.

The Stealth HD170 also comes with a wireless remote that you can use to start and stop recording.  This is key for saving battery life and storage space.  My friend Mike uses the remote with two cameras at the same time on his truck and it makes for allot less footage to sit through at the end of a race.

You can also power the camera by the USB port to get longer record times.  The only limit is the 32gb SDHC card size.  You will also have to put a dust boot over the end of the camera and USB cable since the USB port is at the end of the camera where the back cover opens.

Note: While writing this review I just found out that Drift has a new Drift HD camera coming out this October.  It looks similar to the Stealth HD170 but it’s smaller with more features. I will list the upgraded features below.

Pros:

• Price $269 ($30 cheaper than the GoPro HD but with more features. The new Drift HD will be $369 which is similar to the GoPro price with the add-on LCD screen)

• Resolution up to 1080p HD.  720 has 60fps option.
• Mic input so you can record from an intercom.
• Remote control to start and stop, works with multiple cameras at the same time.
• 1.5” LCD screen makes changing settings and adjusting to the perfect angle a snap.

Cons:

• Lens rotated during the VORRA race from the co-driver wiping it clean. I think he was just pressing to hard causing it to rotate so I don’t see this as a big issue.  There is allot of tension on the lens and maybe someway to lock it down once you find the right angle would improve it in future models.
• The lens is not replaceable. (it is in the new Drift HD model)
• Does not come with a dust cover / case. They do offer an aftermarket cover.

CODE NAME: Cactus Cooler – NEW External Cooling System from FOX Racing Shox

FOX Racing Shox has just released the “ECS” External Cooling System as an option on all new and existing FOX bypass shocks. The ECS is our latest development to come out of the Race Application Development program (RAD) that works with top motorsports athletes to devise and develop new technologies under the most extreme racing conditions.

The ECS cooling system, code name “cactus cooler”, effectively drops fluid temperatures up to 100 degrees. The ECS does not use any pumps or fans; it uses the normal motion of the shock piston as it cycles up and down to pump the fluid through fully adjustable, bypass check valves into a billet aluminum and stainless steel heat sink. After excessive heat is allowed to escape, the cooled fluid continues back to the shock completing the cycle. The faster the shock works, the more fluid is pumped through the cooling system.

The cactus cooler helped Trophy Truck Champion Jesse Jones put a ten minute lead on the rest of the field right off the start in this year’s SCORE, San Felipe 250 race. San Felipe is recognized as one of the most brutal race courses in existence due to the deep sand and relentless three to four foot deep whoops that stretch on for miles. The ECS system allowed Jones to stay on the gas where others had to back off in order to save their shocks. If not for getting stuck in the infamous Matomi wash Jones would have held a comfortable lead into the finish. As it was FOX Racing Shox racer and multi-time champion in his own right Rob MacCachren went on to take the win that day.

CJ Greaves - Maxxis Tires

Meet Colton “CJ” Greaves, the newest member of the Maxxis Racing team. The son of legendary short course racer, Johnny Greaves, CJ is managing to make a name for himself. In 2010, he was the Pro-Buggy Champion for the TORC Series, and finished 3rd in the Lucas Oil Series for SuperLite. Now he’s stepping up to the ultra competitive Pro-Lite division, where he’s already managed a podium finish in one of his first races. Look for big things and multiple podium finishes from CJ this year and in the future.

1. You’re in your first season racing Pro-Lite after racing in SuperLite and Buggies, how are you adjusting to the competition?

The compition is alot stronger in Pro-Lite, but I try to look at it like its been people I’ve been racing all last year, so I dont let them in my head.

2. This is also your first year racing for Maxxis Tires, how are the tires treating you?

The Maxxis Tires are awesome! They’re gripping so good we’re actually looking at other Maxxis Tires that have less traction.

3. Your dad is one of the all-time great short course racers, do you feel pressure to follow in his footsteps?

My dad is a short course legend, but he doesn’t pressure me to follow what he did. If i wanted to do something different he wouldnt have a problem.

4. What’s your favorite track? Why?

My favorite track is probably Barkriver, because it has really good flow and the dirt sand track layout is perfect.

5. Are there any plans to race in any different series aside from short course? Any races that you dream about driving in?

I am interested in doing a little desert racing but mainly shourt course. The only thing i would like to race is a Formula-1 car.

6. Your dad is also your spotter on the track, does he ever yell at you when you make a mistake?

My dad is my spotter along with Lewy and neither one of them gets mad. I know every mistake I make I have to try and make back up, but they help as much as they can.

Meet Maxxis Off-Road Race Team member Marty Hart. Marty has been on the Maxxis team for several years now and won championships in Pro-Lite in CORR and at Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series. This year Marty is stepping up to the ultra-competitive Pro-2 class where he’s facing some big challenges in trying to win a championship in the TORC series.

Q. You’re driving in the Pro-2 class this year after winning the championship in Pro-Lite. How are you adjusting to the competition?
A. For as much adjustment it is to the competition, it is an adjustment to the truck and extra horsepower as well. The Pro 2 class is much deeper and there is more contact than I expected. Cannot wait to get to Crandon to unleash this Toyota horsepower.

Q. You’re from Louisiana, how did you get into off-road racing?
A. Started out racing motocross, then ATVs came along and I just loved the challenge of how hard they were to ride and started racing 3 wheelers, which led me to California

Q. What’s your favorite race-track and Why?
A. Bark River, it is all about the drivers ability to carry speed through corners and pick good lines. Definitely a drivers track!

Q. As the newest member of Johnny Greaves racing team, how is the new team working out for you?
A. We are starting to learn each other and how to communicate. I’m learning what to do inside the truck as well as outside the truck to help the team. Johnny and Curt have so much knowledge about short course trucks and how to be a successful race team. I am just trying to learn as much as I can as fast as possible. We together, have the ability to contend for the championship the very first year.

Q. You’ve been on Maxxis Tires for a few years now, what advantage do they give you over the competition?
A. They give you confidence to just abuse the tire in corners and whoops without worrying about damage to the sidewall. It is a really tough tire. Also, Creighton is always at the tracks supporting Maxxis teams and grooving first hand. Maxxis Tires have been great for my race teams. Looking forward to another championship in Pro2 this year.

Q. Can you share your wifes Gumbo Recipe with us? It’s delicious.
A. She says it is top secret! It is what makes me fast.

Already in a deficit after not completing the first race of the year, Riot Racing is in a critical situation as they enter the Silver State 300. Marc Ewing and Josh Daniel must come out of Alamo, Nevada with a decent finish in each of their vehicles to remain in contention for the championship.

But the team becomes concerned when the race truck unexpectedly stops with only 60 miles to go. Riot calls out for Josh Daniel to take over in the #68 and help salvage this crucial race.

Day 2 of the NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally came to an end today in Loretto. Here are some updates on what is happening so far.

- Unofficial reports say Bud Feldkamp is leading.
- Bob Gordon had valve problems but will continue and is in the top 5.
- #67 was leading day 1 in their class but day 2 brought on carburetor problems and rebuilding it put them behind the lead by over an hour.
- Scott Steinberger is out with a blown motor.
- Walker Evens might be out also.

Tomorrow starts the third and final day as they make their way down to La Paz for the finish. Keep checking back for more updates and pictures.

The NORRA Mexican 1000 Rally kicked off yesterday with tech and contingency at the bullring in Mexicalli, Baja California. This is the second running of the rally since it’s rebirth last year.

94 vehicles are starting this years event which is an increase from last year so that is a step in the right direction for the NORRA organization.

It was a very hot day reaching triple digits but that didn’t stop everyone from having a great time reminiscing about old times and talking with some of the legends of the sport. Bruce Meyers and Walker Evans received a standing ovation as they took the stage during the drivers meeting.

The start of day 1 kicked off this morning at 6am at the Laguna Salada dry lakebed. RDC will be posting more pictures and updates as the rally progresses.
