Once again the team will be competing in some of the most grueling events in North America and Mexico. Justin “Bean” Smith takes the next step in Off-Road racing by becoming a team owner and driver of record for the first time ever in 2009.
Many of you know “Bean” as recent partner to Sigal Greenberg in the BITD series where the two won the 1100 title for semi limited buggies in 2008, he is also well known as an early and main member of the Desert Assassins off road race team. Bean cut his teeth as a navigator and prep person with the DA and along the way became a third driver with Cameron Steele and Clyde Stout who are both now contesting the SCORE Trophy Truck class. Justin has also driven with “King” Dave Hendrickson who rounds out a solid group of tutors and driving partners that also includes Heidi Steele who Justin teamed with in 2005 to win the Baja 1000 and Sportsman buggy class championship. BJ Baldwin is a very talented driver with impressive racing record including two SCORE championships and numerous race wins. BJ will be able to take General Tire to the next level in 2009 with the General Grabber Competition tire. BJ will leap into the season on General Grabber Competition tires at the SCORE Laughlin Leap and Desert Challenge January 25-27 in Laughlin, NV. Citing the unprecedented global economic downturn, ORBA has decided that it is in the best interest of its members and the off-road industry as a whole to cancel the event, and apologizes for any inconvenience that this may cause. 1980 winners congratulate Volkswagen on “Dakar” victory
Wolfsburg (19 January 2009). 29 years ago, on 23 January 1980, Freddy Kottulinsky/Gerhard Löffelmann clinched the first victory for Volkswagen at the “2nd Paris-Algiers-Dakar Rally” in the Iltis, ahead of their French team-mates Patrick Zaniroli/Philippe Colesse. Back then as well as today, Volkswagen celebrated a one-two victory: Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D) won the current edition of the desert classic, which ended in Buenos Aires on Sunday after 9,500 kilometres, in front of their team colleagues Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA) in the Race Touareg. On the way towards clinching the first victory of a diesel-powered vehicle Volkswagen decided ten out of 13 stages in its favour at the first “Dakar” through Argentina and Chile. Read more →
