Monster Team Comes up Big at the Opening Rounds of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series
The entire Monster short course off-road racing team was in Chandler, AZ this past weekend for Rounds 1 & 2 of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, and the team celebrated numerous victories. The unstoppable Rick Huseman, continued right where he left off in 2010, where he won the championship by blowing away the field on consecutive days to take two wins in the Pro-4 category. Huseman not only qualified first each day proving he had the fastest truck on the course, but backed it up with solid victories in each race, where he was never threatened. There’s only one man that can offer him a challenge, fellow Monster teammate, Johnny Greaves, had a solid second place finish in Pro-4 on Sunday, where he had to fight his way from the back of the pack after an early spin-out. Johnny ran out of time to try and make a move on Huseman, but his stellar driving skills were on full display as he wove his way through the field to put himself back in contention.
Continuing his winning ways, Jeff “Ox” Kargola, took the win in the SuperLite division. Fresh off of his victory at the San Felipe Baja 250, “Ox” proved that he’s not only awesome on a bike, but he can drive the wheels off of a SuperLite. Arriving Sunday morning and getting very little practice in, “Ox” sped his way around the Firebird Raceway track to take his very first win in SuperLite. Look for “Ox” to keep pushing the competition this year as he battles for the SuperLite title.
In Pro Lite, Monster team riders Casey Currie and Cameron Steele made a respectable showing each day with top ten finishes. Cameron was making his debut for the Stronghold team in Pro Lite, after winning the Super Buggy category in 2010. He’s still getting a feel for the new truck, so expect him to get faster as he gets acclimated to the vehicle. Casey debut a new vehicle this weekend and is working out a few kinks. After winning the TORC Series Championship in 2010, Casey is racing both the Lucas and TORC series in 2011. Featuring his new General Tire sponsorship, Casey expects to get his truck dialed in and on the podium in upcoming races.
Jeremy “Showtime” McGrath and Marty Hart made their debuts in the Pro 2 class in the Lucas Oil series with a podium finish on Sunday for McGrath. Saturday started off rough as both drivers had issues with getting their trucks geared properly for the short, technical track, but by Sunday they had it figured out. Marty Hart qualified first on Sunday, but due to some mechanical issues after qualifying had to start further back in the pack. He picked his way through the mayhem to get a solid fifth place finish.
McGrath ran a textbook race, where he kept himself in contention throughout the race and waited for an opportunity to present itself to take the lead. That opportunity came and McGrath and fellow Stronghold teammate Rob “Fig” Naughton jumped into the lead. The two of them battled it out for several laps with Naughton eventually taking the win and “Showtime” finishing second for his first podium in the Lucas Series.
All-in-all, a great weekend for the Monster Off-Road Racing team and you can expect to see many more podiums as the racing season progresses.
