The first race of year, Best In The Desert’s Parker 425, lived up to everyone’s expectations. With a gnarly course and over 50 Trick Trucks in the field, everyone knew it was going to be a tough race, but some got more punishment than others. Bevly Wilson Racing had a dream season in 2016. They led the Trophy Truck points championship in their STEEL-IT Jimco for much of the year and narrowly missed taking the title in their first season racing the premiere class in offroad racing. They were ready to take that momentum right into 2017 with a solid finish in Parker.
The STEEL-IT Trophy Truck was in top notch form after the testing at the end of last season. At time trials in Parker, they qualified 10th fastest out of 61 unlimited vehicles. Despite generally damp conditions on the course with some mud in places, dust is always a factor. Starting up front is a huge advantage; the race weekend was getting off to a great start.
“We did very well during qualifying, but we knew it was going to be a race of survival,” said Billy Wilson, “We charged off the line and were running at a solid pace until we noticed a slight oil leak developing from a fitting. Our Maxima Racing Oils gives us great protection but in a 425 mile race, you can’t take any chances with your oil level so we stopped to fix it.” They made quick repairs and got back underway.
Running at full speed, they were putting some miles behind them when they had a very strange incident. A loose tire that was buried in the course got pulled up and wrapped around the rear axle. The rogue tire was interfering with the brakes and locked up the rear end; they had to stop for repairs. It took 20 minutes to pull the tire out and make sure the brakes were functioning. It was scary working under the truck. They were in a 100 mile per hour section and were not able to pull very far off course. They took turns working to free the truck. If either co-driver Chase Laven or driver Billy Wilson was removing the tire, the other watched for approaching vehicles and got everyone out of there when visibility was compromised. Once back on the course, they were now in full pursuit mode to get back the time they lost.
While stalking another competitor, they were pushing hard in the dust. They closed right up on the other truck in a corner. Going deep into the turn, and carrying a lot of speed, they attempted a pass. “It looked flat on the outside of the turn but there were a couple of deep ditches hidden in the dust,” said Billy, “When we hit the first ditch, it broke the steering. Without steering control, the second ditch caused the truck to roll onto the side, ending our day. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but we had a strong truck that was capable of winning.”
It was a tough day in the desert but fortunately Billy and Chase were kept safe by their impact safety gear during the crash. Work on the truck has already begun to prepare for their next test at The Mint 400 race on March 2-5 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since the team coated their entire chassis and suspension components in STEEL-IT® Polyurethane coating, turnaround time in the shop is greatly reduced. STEEL-IT® contains stainless steel micro flakes that allow you to weld right through the coating. Any small cracks or damaged parts are easily seen and quickly repaired. After welding, you can touch it up with a quick spray can application to restore full protection. STEEL-IT® Polyurethane coating has been a huge time saver for the team and with additional support from BFGoodrich Tires, King Shocks, Jimco, Kroyer Racing Engines, KC Hilites, Impact, Maxima Racing Oils, FK Rod Ends, Trailready Beadlock Wheels, Bink Designs, and Rugged Radios, has helped Bevly Wilson racing to achieve great success. Look for the STEEL-IT Trophy Truck to be back out front in no time.
