Extra: Nicknamed “The Jalopy” for it’s unique Herman Munster look. The winged sprint car theory was thought of by Smokey Allerman and way ahead of it’s time in construction and engineering. The single seat car is built with expertise and perfection and is a great example of craftsmanship and design. Long time drag racer Jack Warye and Offroad Supermart owner Carol Vansant campaigned the class 1 car in the early 80′s at 2 Baja races, Parker 400, Mint 400 and Riverside raceway. The car never really got the fame it deserved as Jack said “It always broke”. The car and design was parked in Smokeys garage for 20 years or so, after Jack dropped it off in frustration and built a rear engine V-8 buggy. The NORRA Mexican 1000 was a perfect course for this car. Despite 1 minor driver error on my part, the car worked flawless. The car easily hits 90MPH as you strattle the transmission and feel the heat of motor. Surprisingly the car handles small whoops well and is a real blast to drive, especially on s turn graded roads. It is easy to get the car in a controlled slide and let the power of the car guide you thru the turns, just like a sprint car. The car is a real head turner and got the respect it deserved in BAJA.
