The new AMSOIL Douglas Motorsports program is a five-year deal extending through the 2016 race season. Scott Douglas has been flying the AMSOIL colors since 2006.

“Year after year, Scott has proven to be one of the best drivers in all of off-road racing,” said Jeremy Meyer, Race Program Manager for AMSOIL. “On top of that, Scott has become a great ambassador of AMSOIL and our products. We have a high threshold for quality at AMSOIL, and Scott helps us meet those thresholds both on, and off the track. All of us love his passion for the sport and his desire to push off-road truck racing to the next level of exposure in the U.S.”

Scott Douglas races a PRO 4×4 pickup in the TRAXXAS TORC Series presented by AMSOIL. “PRO 4×4 is the fastest and most technologically advanced class in short course off-road racing,” stated Douglas. “I am thrilled with the new five-year sponsorship deal with AMSOIL. Primarily because the people at AMSOIL are great to work with and their products are second to none. The long-term stability allows us to move forward with R&D to make sure the AMSOIL BFGoodrich truck is the fastest on the race track.”

Douglas Motorsports is currently building an all-new state-of-the-art race truck to complement their current truck. “We are using computer aided design to optimize the chassis design and suspension geometry. The new truck takes PRO 4×4 design to the next level,” continued Douglas.

Scott Douglas finished the 2011 TORC season third in PRO 4×4 points. It was of a developmental year for Douglas Motorsports as the team focused on new combinations to make the truck even faster. At the final race of the year, that hard work paid off with the AMSOIL PRO 4×4 qualifying within a few1/100s of a second of the pole. The truck was very fast all weekend and a favorite to win, but a cut tire and broken transmission flex plate kept Douglas off the podium.

Scott Douglas’ racing career spans more than three decades. The veteran off-road racer has 87 career victories and a total of eleven season championships. The early part of Scott’s racing was in the desert where he racked up a total of three Baja 1000 wins. Douglas is also the only driver in SCORE history to take an overall win in a class 7 mid-size truck. At the San Felipe 250, Scott Douglas took the overall victory in a V-6 powered Ford Ranger, beating all the unlimited full-size trucks and Class 1 buggies to the finish line. Before forming his own team, Douglas was hired to drive for Walker Evans Racing and Herzog Motorsports.

In the mid-1990s Douglas Motorsports focused their efforts on short course off-road racing, building one of the most impressive teams in the history of the sport. During his short course career, Douglas has won three major Cup races. The first was a BorgWarner Manufacturer Challenge Cup win in 1997. In 2006, the team’s first season with AMSOIL as a title sponsor, Scott Dougas had a perfect weekend at Crandon International Raceway, winning both class 4 races and a second BorgWarner Cup. The BorgWarner Cup was retired after 2009 and AMSOIL stepped up to fill the void and continue the tradition with the AMSOIL Cup. In 2010, the first year of the AMSOIL Cup, Scott Douglas won his third Cup in decisive fashion, beating all the PRO 4x4s and passing the entire PRO 2WD field to take the checkered flag. Douglas nearly repeated with a fourth Cup in 2011, chasing down a very fast AMSOIL teammate, the Boss Snow Plow Nissan Titan driven by Chad Hord. It took a little longer to work through the PRO 4×4 field in 2011 but Douglas finished a close second, and first PRO 4×4 on the podium.

The 2012 TORC Series presented by AMSOIL is currently scheduled to kick-off April 28-29 at Cycle Ranch outside of San Antonio, Texas. From there the series will travel to Buchanan, Michigan and the Red Bud MX track, then Crandon International Raceway June 16-17 for the Spring Brush Run. The next two races are tied to the NASCAR schedule; the first is Charlotte, North Carolina on July 13-14, then on to Chicagoland Route 66 Raceway on July 19-20. Bark River, Michigan is on the schedule August 11-12. The 2012 TORC points season will wrap-up September 1-3 in Crandon, Wisconsin with the running of the 3rd annual AMSOIL Cup.

The racing world lost a great champion, fierce competitor, and good friend this year when when a plane crash claimed the lives of Rick Huseman, his brother Jeff, and their pilot. It was a devastating loss for off-road racing and Douglas Motorsports would like to encourage everyone to support the Huseman family by making a donation at: http://www.fast-aid.org/donations.

Douglas Motorsports would like to thank all their great fans and sponsors, including; AMSOIL, BFGoodrich Tires, Baileigh Industrial, KC Hilites, MasterCraft Seats, Fox Shox, Walker Evans Racing Wheels, Raceline Oil Pumps, Miller Electric, BorgWarner, VP Racing Fuels, Ringers Gloves, Hawk Performance, Howe Performance Power Steering, J&H Transmission, MSD, Peterson Fluid Systems, and Phil’s Inc.

RED BUD, MI MAY 30, 2011 – The entire Midwest has been doused with rain and rivers across the country are ready to break free of their banks. Hidden in the lush landscape of southern Michigan is the legendary Red Bud racing facility that has been similarly saturated. The rain, combined with a brand new short course track set the stage for an extremely muddy start to the 2011 Traxxas TORC Series.

Rain delays caused a continual shifting schedule but the AMSOIL team of Scott Douglas, Chad Hord, Mike Oberg, and Brad Lovell were camped out under awnings and ready to hit the track at a moment’s notice. Pro-4 and Pro-2 were cancelled for Saturday leaving the focus on Lovell in the Pro-Light class. Starting in pole position Lovell slung mud around the track fighting off pressure and breaking free from the pack. He led for half the race until his pace was broken by the mandatory caution. The restart was devastating as fuel problems caused the #44 AMSOIL Nissan to choke on fumes before regaining speed. Unfortunately, the problem was terminal and Brad’s best race yet turned into a DNF. “It was truly a heartbreaker,” said Lovell, “The truck performs a world better than last season but we got bit by a gremlin.”

Additional rain again caused difficulty on Sunday and left the track muddier than the day before. Due to the DNF, Lovell was forced to start 11th. The green flag flew and hundreds of pounds of mud rose into the air. Brad recalls, “The mud was incredible. I was repeatedly blinded and blew through all my tearoffs. I was literally getting buried by mud and had to clear space for my feet to work the pedals. The bone stock BFG Mud-Terrains were the right call and I had great control. Everyone else was sliding around banging into each other and I fought for my line. I have never been part of such a muddy or destructive race.” The #44 AMSOIL Nissan charged the field and was putting pressure on 3rd before mechanical issues again plagued the team. “I’m disappointed with our results but confident we showed the other teams that we are racing for a win, not a mid-pack finish.”

The weather did not hamper spirits as the race had an estimated 8,000 fans show up and TORC worked expertly with track officials to make on the fly adjustments. Lovell concludes, “AMSOIL, BFGoodrich, Torchmate, Nissan, and Spidertrax all had someone on hand to help the team and while our results didn’t reflect their dedication, our newfound speed did. We can fix fuel problems and will only get stronger in the 3 weeks leading up to Crandon.”

The team wishes to thank all the volunteers, supporters, and family who helped at this event. The off-road community is a great bunch and the same people that race against Lovell one weekend are part of the team the next. The Lovell Brothers now regroup in Colorado to prepare for an assault on Crandon June 18th & 19th before a mad dash to Pikes Peak for the 89th running of the Race to the Clouds.

Perfect blue sky. T-shirt temperatures. Large crowds in attendance.

The first pro race started at 10:30am.

PRO4x4

Both Rick Huseman and Johnny Greaves had a fair shot at the Pro4 title as this race concludes the season. Rick would have to win and Johnny had to finish no better then forth for Rick to get his name on the TORC series title.

Right after the green flag dropped Ken Kincaid got the hole shot closely followed by Greaves and Huseman. By turn 4 the pressure of the two Monster Energy trucks on Kincaid turns out to be too much as he cleared the course for the big boys.

Then still within the first lap Greaves gave way to Huseman after a small driving mistake and Huseman never looked back until the end of the race.

Scott Douglas consistently defended for a third place finish.

Adrian Cenni in forth had Kyle LeDuc creeping up from behind. There was some rubbing between the two and after some contact, Cenni approached the “Traxxis Launch Zone” jump sideways crashing into a concrete pillar. His day was done but not before his rear tire ripped off in the violent crash. It bounced into the opposite track and hit Huseman’s truck dead square in the front grill. No harm done other than some cosmetic damage.

Huseman wins the race while Greaves finishes less then one car length after him to win the overall TORC series championship.

Top 3 Finishers
1. Rick Huseman
2. Johnny Greaves
3. Scott Douglas

PRO2wd

Ricky Johnson holds the points lead for the championship title with a 5point lead over Rob MacCachren going into the race.

Starting with the first turn Dan Vanden Heuvel takes the lead from the group and never gives it away. He wins his final Pro2 race as he retires from racing after the weekend.

Ricky Johnson managed to land in second place after turn one and retained that position when the checkered flag dropped. This didn’t come easy as Scott Taylor briefly moved into second place late into the race but had to ultimately settle for third.

Rob MacCachren had to pull into the pits for a tire change right before the yellow flag and had to work his way into the lead pack lap by lap after the green flag dropped.

Rob finished in 4th place, giving the Pro2 TORC series championship to RJ.

Robby Gordon just like Saturday had a poor outcome as he ran in the rear of the group until he eventually pulled over after he lost a engine belt and his engine started to overheat dangerously.

Top 3 Finishers:
1. Dan Vanden Heuvel
2. Ricky Johnson
3. Scott Taylor

ProLite

The ProLite race was rather uneventful with no major battles or position changes.
Just like the previous day Casey Currie ran up front not only unchallenged but also with a huge gap behind him.

The weekend wins also earned him the TORC series championship in ProLite

Ross Hoek just like yesterday reached the podium with a second place today.

Todd Cunningham worked his way from the middle of the pack all the way to a third place.

Marty Hart had early problems with his hood flipping over the windshield blocking his view after he plowed into Andrew Caddell. He was forced to pit and lost lot’s of ground. Later in the race he had to drop out with some technical problems.

This was the last time 4-cylinders will race at Crandon as the TORC series mandates v8 engines next season.

Top 3 Finishers:
1. Casey Currie
2. Ross Hoek
3. Todd Cunningham

AmsOil Cup

The race everyone waited for all weekend was the AmsOil Cup race with a large cash prize as a reward. 20 trucks lined with the Pro2 group starting first followed by the much faster Pro4 29 seconds later.

For the first time this weekend Robby Gordon’s bright orange Speed Factory Tv Pro2 was at the front of the field. Unfortunately before the first lap was completed the driveshaft twisted and disabled all forward motion.

“It took me 2 practice races to be where I wanted to be…..then I did a liitle bit of a wheelie and it twisted the driveshaft.” is what Robby Gordon had to say later in the pits as he signed autographs.

It took the Pro4′s just a few laps to catch and pass the Pro2′s. Rick Huseman soon led the pack until one of his rear tires disintegrates and not only destroys part of his fiberglass body but also all chances for the big payday.

Eventually Scott Douglas claims the front spot and never gives up to claim victory to the first ever AmsOil Cup. Steve Barlow finished second closely followed by Johnny Greaves.

The Pro4 clearly were the fastest trucks in this race. The fastest Pro2′s took fourth with Rob MacCachren driving and fifth with Jeff Kincaid.

Top 3 Finishers
1. Scott Douglas
2. Steve Barlow
3. Johnny Greaves

This concludes the TORC season for 2010. The first TORC race may be held again in Crandon come spring 2011

Saturday PRO2wd
Since qualifying and practice were canceled Friday, TORC allowed for one lap of warmup prior to the the first Pro race of the day.

NASCAR’s Robby Gordon overshot turn 2 wide and parks it briefly in the grass outside the turn involuntarily. Luckily this is practice and not racing.

While the crowd awaits the green flag the announcer calls out racer names to get the fans to cheer for the favorite driver. Kincaid and Hord received the most love from the mostly local crowd.

Right after turn one Scott Taylor and Todd LeDuc get into each other and Todd loses. His day is over.

The running order after lap one was Jeff Kincaid, Rob McCachren, Ricky Johnson, Jeremy McGrath. Robby Gordon managed to be last or almost last.

No major position changes occurred throughout the race until Kincaid eventually pulled out of the race with some vehicle troubles. However he did set fastest lap in this class with 1:21.54

Rob McCachren held the lead over Ricky Johnson until the last lap when Ricky set his truck up perfectly and was able to snatch the lead. Rob tried but when the checkered flag dropped it was Ricky on the podium.

Top 3 Finishers:
1. Ricky Johnson
2. Rob McCachren
3. Jeremy McGrath

ProLite

Right after the high speed famous Crandon turn one Casey Currie emerges ahead of the group for the lead, which he managed to defend for almost the remainder of the race.

Casey lead all laps until the last turn when Andrew Caddell bumps into him in the last turn rolling him over. TORC awarded the win to Casey despite his roll over right before the finish line.

Andrew Caddell was in 2nd position through the finish.
21 3rd. Ross Hoek

Marty Hart ran up front in the top 4 until he fell out right before the mandatory yellow flag.

Top 3 Finishers:
1. Casey Currie
2. Andrew Caddell
3. Ross Hoek

PRO4x4

The highlight race of the day brought out the big guns of TORC racing.

After the last turn of the first lap the field settled into Steve Barlow 83, Johnny Greaves 22, Scott Douglas 7, Mark Jenkins 25, Mike Jenkins 47, Rick Huseman 36, Adrian Cenni 11, Kyle LeDuc 99, Kurt LeDuc 43, Ken Kincaid 44.

Then soon after the 2nd lap on it was Monster vs Red Bull with Greaves ahead of Barlow, Douglas then Huseman. Kyle dropped out of sight.

For the remainder of the race Johnny never gave up the lead and in fact widened the gap from the rest of the field.

Cenni raced his first TORC race this season and worked his way from 5th place slowly all the way to a 3rd place podium finish.

The big show was between Douglas and Huseman as they bumped into each other battling for second place. Eventually Barlow rolled in the last turn of the track leaving him helpless on his roof while moments later Douglas caught on fire and pulled off the track. Rescue workers attended to him quickly and put the fire out with no harm done to the driver.

Mark Jenkins rolled his truck also in the last turn over the outside wall.

Pro4x4 was by far the most exciting pro race of the day. Let’s see what Sunday will have to offer. Huseman set the fastest lap of the day 1:19.865 however wasn’t able to beat his old track record.

Top 3 Finishers
1. Johnny Greaves
2. Rick Huseman
3. Adrian “Wildman” Cenni

No matter who is racing, or what promoter is putting on the race, Crandon will always be the standard by which other races are held to. With its rich history and family tradition, the beginning of the best short course race has officially begun.

The labor day parade kicked off today in downtown Crandon, bringing everyone in town to see all the race vehicles and teams. The parade had the usual participants, local government, high school marching bands, the fire department, and the legendary “wood mobile”. Robby Gordon finished off the festivities by doing a few BJ Baldwin esque donuts on the street at the joy of the crowd.

Right after the parade qualifying was supposed to start for all truck classes, but mother nature had other plans. She was so overwhelmed that RDC had made it to Crandon that her tears covered the track all day, making TORC cancel all practice for the day.

From TORC, “Due to wet conditions at Crandon Off Road International Raceway, all Traxxas TORC Series Presented by AMSOIL on-track activities have been canceled for the day.”

RDC apologizes for the inconvenience we caused today.

Not a big part though, I have never even been to the race. Having built a formidable racer for the TORC short course series though, this year was different. I never thought the V-8 powered AMSOIL Pro-Light would be competitive in the Pikes Peak Open class but I knew I needed seat time, especially after my pummeling in the opening rounds at Crandon.

We rushed back home to Colorado from Crandon, WI only to complete tech and make the drivers meeting with 2 minutes to spare. There are no breaks for latecomers here and a poor sole from Hungary was turned away after his car was stuck in customs during the practice days. Glad I wasn’t late. The Pikes Peak Open class for the 88th running consisted of 9 vehicles including a modified Cobra, a dedicated hill climb car from New Zealand, a WRC rally car from Luxembourg, and a Honda Ridgeline outfitted for Baja. All you really need for the class is a body so I guess my Pro-Light was right at home.

At about 4:30 am I found myself at 12,700 ft waiting for the sun to rise. It felt like a weird mix between an expeditionary base camp and a pit. At 5:15 we started running and got 4 attempts in before the road opened and tourist traffic arrived. We repeated the early morning practice two more times on lower sections of the road before a much needed day of rest in preparations for the race on Sunday.

Race day conditions were perfect and my only worry was fading rear brakes that were exposed in practice. I had since built some cooling ducts and knew that the AMSOIL brake fluid was good to well over 500 degrees. All I had to do was keep my foot off the brakes.

I can’t say too much about the run itself as I was really trying to concentrate. At one point I got to jerking the wheel around way too much and needed to slow my hands. I could feel tension in my body and several times told myself to relax and focus. On the narrow exposed turns it occurred to me that my tires were actively saving my life. With 4 miles left, I remember thinking, “I still have brakes! Go, go, go!” I was merciless on the motor but everything was holding. As I snaked through the alpine boulder field my mind drifted to the fact that most guys were at home watching sports on TV.

Why was I compelled to do this? Oh that’s right, to live life to its fullest. Stay focused Brad! I reached the pavement near the top and knew there wasn’t much to hold me back now. I then rounded the last corner to see the checkered flag. Wow! I was still in one piece. A 2nd place trophy was just icing on the cake. My total time was 13:17 over 12.42 miles with an elevation gain of 4,720 ft and average speed of 56 mph.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is an amazing race. It needs no hype as it is the second oldest race in the country and has been sustainable longer than most of us have been alive. It has big names and unknowns, record setters and adventure seekers. I was there for seat time in my new truck but fell in love with a phenomenal local race that I have neglected my whole life. It has the same airs of adventure that attract people to the Baja. I don’t care if they pave it, I almost now welcome it. Either way, I can’t wait to get back up the mountain next year.

Video of my run:

I really want to thank everyone who, in 5 months, helped take this from an idea to a functioning truck sitting at 14,110 ft. You know who you are and I am grateful. The fast pace of the TRAXXAS TORC series continues with the next rounds of racing in Bark River, MI July 10 & 11. If you are in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by our AMSOIL trailer.

(Nov. 1, 2009, For Immediate Release) The best off road truck racers on the planet converged at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to lay it on the line and turn their 800 HP trucks loose in a no-holds-barred battle to secure their championships after a season-long fifteen rounds of the most intense short course racing on earth, with titles and first-time victories up for grabs right down to the last laps.

Ricky “Bad Boy” Johnson was up against his rival and nemesis, the slick veteran Rob MacCacharen in the ultra competitive Pro 2 wheel drive class, with young gun Todd LeDuc also with a shot at the championship, along with two-wheel legend Jeremy McGrath thirsting for his first win. To have a shot at the trophy, motocross icon Johnson would have to lead flag-to-flag, and he hit the track with only “win or wreck” on his mind.

In the Pro Lights, the most dominating driver in class history, Jeff Kincaid, in his division swan song as he moves up to Pro 2 in 2010, only needed to be strong and solid. But he was up against a challenging track, and the likes of upstart Monster Energy’s Casey Currie, as well as the Metal Mulisha’s Brian Deegan, both hungry and willing to do whatever it took to stand on top of the podium.

The heavyweight division is the dirt-grinding Pro 4 Wheel Drive, and Monster Energy’s Rick Huseman cruised into Vegas in command – but be not misled into thinking this meant anything except what many are calling the most intense, competitive and unpredictable race in the sport’s history – including exploding cars, drivers racing blind, trucks crawling on trucks, all leading to season-ending, heart-stoppping one-lap shootout which no one could have predicted. It was a truly historic way to finish the extraordinary innagural season of the Traxxas TORC off road series. This is one race you simply do not want to miss.

Supporing TORC is former off road racer, three time NASCAR Champion, and current Chase for the Spring Cup leader, Jimmie Johnson, joining the ABC telecast as special technical reporter.

Mark you calendars or set your DVR’s – Sunday, Nov. 8, 1:30 PM Eastern/10:30 AM Pacific – ABC

Huseman, MacCachren and Kincaid Earn Championships

Corona, CA (October 28, 2009)- The Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL wrapped up its inaugural season on the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 23rd and 24th, finishing up 16 rounds of the most intense off-road racing on the planet. The track, located just a few miles north of the famous Las Vegas Strip, presented a dreadful challenge for not only the field of talented off-road racers, but also the track crews who battled hard all weekend to keep the dusty conditions under control. With championships on the line, a very unpredictable track, and the fact that it was the last race of the season, made for some very entertaining and heart stopping racing action. In fact, there were very few fenders left on the trucks by the end of the weekend!

Marty Hart took the PRO Light class by storm taking both the win and the Oakley Bomb Run Award for the fastest lap on Friday night. Hart did not finish as well Saturday taking 5th place, but managed to hold on to a second in points for 2009. Chris Brandt would finish behind him with the second spot on the podium. Brandt would take third on Saturday. Casey Currie climbed the podium in Las Vegas with a third place finish Friday night, and an emotional first place finish on Saturday. 2009 PRO Light Champion Jeff Kincaid did not podium the entire weekend- but had enough points to finish the season on top and take home the championship with 9 podiums and a series leading 10 Oakley Bomb Run Awards. Chad Hord suffered mechanical problems on Friday but made a great comeback on Saturday. He battled hard but was unable to pass Currie on the final lap and settled for a second place finish. Hord rounded out the top 3 in the points race for the season.

The tightest points race of the weekend was the AMSOIL PRO 2WD class with Rob MacCachren and Ricky Johnson battling it out until the end. MacCachren would take the win Friday night and the Oakley Bomb, with Johnson taking second. The results flip flopped on Saturday with Johnson coming out victorious and MacCachren taking second. Even after leading the entire race Saturday, Johnson would miss the championship by only four points. Third place finishers for the weekend were Jeremy McGrath (Friday) and Dan Vanden Heuvel (Saturday). Third place points finisher Todd LeDuc took home the Oakley Bomb Run Award for Saturday.

The LeDuc boys dominated the Kumho Tires PRO 4×4 class on Friday night under the lights with Kyle taking the win, and father Curt taking second place. Scott Douglas took third place and Rick Huseman clocked the fastest lap bringing him to a total of seven Oakley Bomb Run Awards for 2009.

The PRO 4×4 was the last race of the evening on Saturday, but well worth the wait. It was a true “last man standing” scenario with only four trucks finishing in a race that featured dramatic flips, crashes and even a fire as Scott Douglas’ truck exploded into a fireball just in front of the Red Bull hospitality tent. Johnny Greaves led early, but caught a rut on lap 4 and rolled, taking him out of the race-but not until he had recorded the fastest lap to take home the Oakley Bomb Award. Mike Jenkins and Steve Barlow battled fender-to-fender on the last lap with Jenkins edging ahead at the finish line to get his first PRO 4X4 win. Barlow’s second place also gave him his first podium of the year. Curt LeDuc would round off the podium in third place. Rick Huseman lost his steering due to heavy contact halfway through the race but had enough points to score himself the 2009 Championship.

Bryce Menzies and Ryan Arciero competed in their first TORC races in the PRO 2WD class. Both drivers are hoping to return to the series full time in 2010.

The TORC Series will return with a vengeance in 2010 with an amped up schedule and new stops. Stay tuned for a schedule in the upcoming weeks.

Five Bonus Points: Las Vegas, Nevada

1. Stat of the Week
Steve Barlow got his first podium of 2009 on Saturday night!

2. Who Said That?

ANSWER: Curt LeDuc

3. Spotters’ Stand
PRO 4×4:.The final race in this class was nothing short of chaotic- with only five trucks finishing the race. Rick Huseman didn’t finish, but took the championship for 2009.

PRO 2WD: The battle was intense as Ricky Johnson led the entire race, but in the end despite Johnson’s efforts, Rob MacCachren would take the 2009 championship. Newcomber Ryan Arciero did extremely well finishing sixth.

PRO LIGHT: Casey Currie ended the 2009 season as he started- with an emotional win. Jeff Kincaid took the championship home with a seventeen point lead.

4. Name that driver
This driver’s son made his TORC sportsman debut this weekend, almost pulling off a win.

ANSWER: Johnny Greaves

After a string of victories in XRRA and BITD, the team just took home the We-Rock National Championship. #232 Brad & Roger Lovell lead the team to victory against the best rockcrawlers from across the country. While mechanical issues plagued #28 Kunz / Shaffer, #199 Jesse Haines & Brian Howard narrowly missed the unlimited championship and pulled off a 3rd place finish.
“I never dreamed that we could win both the XRRA and We-Rock National Championships,” comments Brad Lovell, “It’s a great reward for years of hard work.” Farmington is known for its high bluffs and death defying climbs. The We-Rock courses did not disappoint. After a solid start, #232 tackled course B4 which gave competitors the option to risk a horrific fall and climb a 30ft bluff. The BFGoodrich rubber griped were others struggled and failed. Brad and Roger got a perfect score for the course and moved in to the lead.
The team continued to make smart moves all weekend and carried an 18 point lead into the final round. Brad recalls, “After we climbed another huge wall on A4, I knew we would finish well. A lot of people rolled there and we climbed right to the top.” The team had a solid plan for the shootout course and with Roger’s skillful guidance, the AMSOIL / Torchmate Ranger furthered its lead before reaching the finish line and victory! Brad continued, “I am proud of our team, family, and sponsors for this accomplishment. No single truck has ever won the National Championships in both XRRA and We-Rock. All we did between events is change the tires and gearing. It says a lot for the versatility of the truck and parts we use.”
Bill Kunz and Mike Shaffer, also in the pro-modified class, had a strong start by putting the Torchmate Diablo to work on a daring slide across a rock wall. The optional line rewarded risk takers that maneuvered sideways across a steep face. Any slip would drop the vehicle off a ledge end over end down the rocks. Kunz made the right moves but would later roll on the A4 climb. Unknown damage later caused the team to roll again, smashing their hopes for a trip to the shootout.
Jesse Haines piloted his freshly rebuilt #199 unlimited buggy with the aid of spotter Brian Howard. The pair had their typical strong showing throughout the regular competition and were sitting well within striking distance for the win as the shootout started. Jesse put the pressure on and went straight for the first bonus climb using his rear wheel steering to climb up and over the impossible ledge. He would be the only one clear the bonus and made short work of the rest of the course. When the dust settled, Haines was in 3rd place, giving Torchmate Racing yet another podium finish.
The team now heads to scenic Moab, UT for some filming before a much needed pause. The action has yet to stop though as the team still has several races to go before putting the 2009 campaign to rest. Mid-November the team will depart for the grand-daddy of them all – the epic Baja 1000. News of the teams plans and sources for live coverage of the race will be available in the coming weeks.
