DRIVE WTC Townsel Memorial

DRIVE returns to Plaster City after their summer hiatus and once again proves they put on some of the best and safest off-road racing in the country. With over 65 volunteers, 16 rovers, life flight helicopters, introduction of the hot pit and fuel containment to their desert series; DRIVE continues to prove that they are on the forefront of putting on safe yet fun and competitive desert racing. With a meticulously marked racecourse through what has always been known as some of the toughest terrain any desert has to offer, DRIVE put on a GP style two-heat race format with morning and afternoon races with overall times determining finishing spots.

Heat 1: Cody Robinson had a good lead in1600 but engine troubles took him out of contention leaving Ross Mattox in the top spot for the weekend.

First in class 1300 went to Mark Valverde who looked to have a flawless day

Heat 2: Steve Looney took both heats with ease; besting the biggest class (1450) in the field with a combine time of 2hrs 26min 12sec., eleven minutes faster than the competition

Heat 3: Jeff Dickerson of Brawley Ca. took the class 1 and o/a win for the weekend. Jeff had an intense battle with Kyle Conlon for the o/a position but caught a break when Conlon lost a CV on the last lap. An added bonus for the Dickerson family was Jeff’s son Broc took the win in trophy kart with an awesome third lap pass in the rough stuffing the front end with an explosion of dirt.  Broc made the pass stick and brought it in for a half car lead at the finish. Jeff was unavailable for comment when the results came out but you could tell Jeff was very proud of his son on race day.

What is WCT Townsel (provided by DRIVE)

On Saturday morning May 16, 2009, Wes Townsel with his two sons, Cody 10 and

Tanner 5, left his wife Jenifer and daughter Hailey at home. They were headed out to go fishing on the East Highline Canal, a normal trip where they had been countless times before, but this time they would not be coming home. As Wes was driving his sons to the canal they were involved in a tragic accident that took all three of their lives.

Not only did this accident leave Jenifer with the unimaginable heartache of losing all three of her boys at once, but it also left her with the burden of having to pay for the services to put them to rest.

Wes and his family are close friends of Larry Cox and his wife Tracy. Most of you know that Larry and Tracy are dedicated volunteers of DRIVE. Larry spends countless hours in the desert with me looking for new courses and Tracy is an important part of our timing team. Wes was also a friend to the off-roading community here in Imperial Valley. We named this race after Wes, Cody, and Tanner to give back to the Cox Family, the Townsels, and to the Imperial Valley Community.

A personal note

As I wrote this, I remembered the day Wes and his sons passed very clearly. I was in Texas for the TORC series race at the Texas Speedway; I got the call from a good friend in the Imperial Valley. Wes and his wife Jenifer were friends I went to school with and had known for the majority of my life; I had many good times with them hanging out with family and friends in the desert. Wes was a person who would go above and beyond for a friend and even more for his family; I’m sure his boys would’ve turned out the same. Wes is sorely missed and this race in his and his son’s honor is only a small way to show how much. Thank you Doug, Larry and all the DRIVE crew for this memorial race.

Well…Here we are. It’s been just under two months since the California 200 tragedy. As a promoter everything I knew as right or as wrong has been completely turned upside down.

Its been over two years since the thought of DRIVE even came into my head. DRIVE was started by off road racing volunteers to offer an alternative for truck and buggy racing in Plaster City. Our mission was to provide quality racing at an affordable price while pushing the agenda of keeping off road areas open. I can honestly say that we got off track at some point and got into a price war. That price war put us in a bad position and took away from our original goals. We also got off on the wrong foot with negativity. That was never my intention.

I was never supposed to be the President of this organization. I was supposed to be the guy that chose and marked courses. The person I started this with was going to be the face of the organization. Before we got to the first race he decided that it wasn’t for him. When he told me he was done I had nothing to say but “I’m not giving up”.  As a leader I have certainly tripped and stumbled but at the end of the day I know in my heart that what I have tried to do is pure.

I’m an organizer and a planner not a salesman.  In the last few years I’ve had to learn to wear multiple hats. Marketing, course director, politician, mediator, book keeper, and soon to be DAD. Yep…new DRIVE member coming in February.

After the California 200 tragedy there was a brief time when I thought “I’m done. I can’t handle something like this on my head.” Then I grieved. Then I got mad. Then I sunk into depression. Then I picked myself up by my dirty, paint covered boots and decided that there was no other option then to press forward. All over the course of about 24 hours. My wife (Mamma DRIVE) put it all in perspective. She asked me “What are you going to do?” She could have easily said “I’m out and you need to stop.”

I immediately thought that sponsors would pull out and that it would be the end. We personally were already spending every dime we had to make our races happen. Any lose of sponsors would be a disaster. The exact opposite happened. Since August a large number of companies have stepped up to keep racing in Plaster City going. So where are we now? We are in a position to actually do what we started out to do but facing the most uncertain times we will ever face. All I know is that next week I get to do the thing I love most about this job…pounding stakes and marking off another bad ass course.

FiberwerX is pushing the 1450 class in this event and we are sponsoring (25) *free 1450 entries.
*Free entries will be announced at the drivers meeting prior to the race.
FiberwerX is spearheading promotions and marketing for this event.
We are producing attractive Event Fliers and Posters to be distributed all over So-Cal

*DRIVE requires each team to pay a $20 land survey fee and $20 membership fee. Membership fee is for all Drivers and Co-Drivers. Survey & Membership fee will not be included if free entry is won.

Start Order Draw will be held 1:00PM at Fibertech on October 3^rd, 2010. No pre-payment is required to be included in the draw but all Drivers of Record must have a current membership prior to 1PM.

We will be holding a meeting on August 10, 2010 in an effort to improve racing in Plaster City and we want your input. This meeting is open to anyone that wants to be a part of growing racing in our local desert. Racers, team members, volunteers, businesses, media, chamber of commerce, and promoters are all invited.

Just because DRIVE is organizing the meeting does not mean that it will be all about DRIVE. The goal is to get together as a community of off roaders and put together a plan to improve racing in PC. If we can come together as a group and discuss what the pros and cons are with racing in Plaster City we will, as a group, be able start taking the steps necessary to grow the area into the world class racing that it should be. I am leaving my ego at home for this one. It’s not about me or DRIVE. The promoter sets the stage. The real people that make a race happen are the teams, volunteers, spectators, sponsors, and media. That’s why we are asking you all to get involved and be a part of this. We want to hear your constructive comments and ideas. Once we put a plan together we are going to asking all of you to get involved to help us make it happen.

In order to get the most out of this meeting it needs to run in an orderly and productive fashion. If you want to speak you will need to sign up at the beginning of the meeting and we will call on each person to present their ideas and concerns.

Round three of the 2010 Competitive Metals Championship presented by DRIVE

FiberwerX Off Road Fiberglass is pleased to announce the continued support of the DRIVE Racing Series and encouragement of Desert Racing in the Imperial Valley. In addition to the Title Sponsorship of September 18th Night Race, FiberwerX is leading the way to having 25 trucks in the 1450 class race for free.

FiberwerX is working with several other companies as well as DRIVE Off Road Racing to put together a sponsorship package that will cover the entry cost of (25) 1450 racers at the FiberwerX WCT Townsel Mermorial Night Race. 25 names will be drawn from a hat on Saturday at the drivers meeting. The entry fees for those 25 teams will be refunded by the end of the race. To be eligible all teams must pre-registered by Saturday September 4th and have paid the entry fee before the end of registration on Sept 18.

When all is said and done there is expected to be up to 50 trucks racing the 1450 class at this event. The only fees that the raffle winning teams will have to pay are the $20 Survey Fund and the $25 Year End Points Fund. All other cost associated with the entry fee are being covered by FiberwerX and the associated event promotion.

Jason McNeil of FiberwerX commented on the additional support which he has inspired. “The 1450 style truck racing is where I came from. My brothers and I built off road trucks at home. My dad pulled his cars out of the garage, and before he knew it, my brothers and I would have a truck torn up and half way built by the time he knew the garage was a work shop.” Jason continued, “Supporting this division of racing is very rewarding. I know what it is like showing up to a race and using your last couple hundred dollars for an entry fee. Hopefully this will help the Sportsman racers and everyone can support DRIVE to help develop relations with the Imperial Valley and the authorities that police our OHV lands.”

Jesse Ashcraft (78) overalled the Drive Racing ORW Grand Prix race held September 19th. This race also debuted Heidi Steele’s  first time in a Trophy Truck (14).

The race was divided into 2 Heats with 3 Groups each for a total of six races. The two heats results got added up at the end of the day for a single total result. All classes had to run 4 laps per heat (8 total) of 13.5 miles length.

The break between heats allowed the drivers a quick rest and gave room for repairs while the racing action never never stopped and made for some good spectating. Plaster City after all is one of the few places where a race involves spectators off-roading as the entire Off-Road park is open to the public all year around.

On a RDC personal note our staff photographer Art managed some driving duty in the 979 car proofing that we follow what we preach. Awesome!

El Centro, CA – July 22, 2009 – The December 12, 2009 race date has been changed to November 7, 2009. We made the decision to change the date based on scheduling conflicts with other races happening during that part of the year. The new date also fits in better with the desert clean-up that we have scheduled in Plaster City on October 31st.

The entire FiberwerX Crew cannot thank everyone enough for coming out and supporting our event on May 2nd. We all had a great time meeting new people, talking to old friends and sharing our accomplishments with the rest of the community. We estimate about 2,000+ people stopped by throughout the course of the day and are very pleased to call the event a true success.

Without a doubt, most everyone who attended was stoked on the FREE Carne Asada BBQ.
Carlos and his crew (from Baja Pits / U.S. Wheels) cooked up 250 pounds of fresh beef. We want to give big thanks for volunteering and taking the initiative. We could not have done it without your help and expertise! Carlos later quoted “This was the biggest off-road event I have been a part of, bigger than any SCORE & CODE drawing party combined. You guys put on a great event!”

San Diego local bands Skip Jack & FM Revolver kept the party flowing all day with great vocals and awesome riffs under the Dirt Alliance tent performing several sets to the large crowd throughout the day! Dirt Alliance was passing out free From The Dirt DVD’s which just won the 2009 Best Off-Road Truck Video Extremy Award. Travis Siflinger was on hand giving away free passes and promoting the upcoming SXS Stadium Series that’s happening this Saturday, May 9th at Perris Automotive Speedway, so don’t miss out! The FiberwerX girls were out in force hanging out and taking pictures with everyone at the show. Didn’t they look good? ☺ Curtis & Klaus from Race-Dezert.com setup a booth and had Heidi Steele signing autographs near the end of the day. RDC donated some of the DP Series DVD’s to FiberwerX to play on our big 60” Plasma for people to watch, relax & eat tacos inside our shop.

Local friends SDORC (San Diego Off-Road Coalition) stepped up and played a big part to help our raffle go down. The night before our event Meg from ORBA got in a horrible accident on the 78 and her truck was totaled (she is fine by the way) so we are very happy that SDORC was able to show up and make it happen! We accumulated $12K of contributions from FiberwerX, Drive Racing Series, Tubeworks, Bully Dog, Light Force, Fox Racing Shocks, RacerX, Powder1, Mastercraft, L&M Tires/Toyo Tires, Race-Dezert, Dezert Nation, FX Fabrication, Richer Racing, Threat Motorsports, California Metal, JuanCO Performance, Bink Designs, Kleanwerx, National Spring, Shock Pros, Bee Hive Sports Bar, TrueLine, Havoc Motorsports, Sand Hustler Clothing,1450.org and late additions from 4130 Clothing, Paul at Racer Services, and Baja Mike at Kartek. We successfully raised $5,600 from raffle ticket sales to donate to ORBA / SDORC to help keep our deserts OPEN! The FiberwerX Crew is very grateful to all our vendors that contributed to the raffle and the offroad community working together to achieve our objectives while having a lot of fun doing it!

The Drive Racing Organization received numerous responses and attracted many new entries with their big pay outs, cash bonuses, and unique opportunities for racing in the Imperial Valley. The next event is the FiberwerX 200 Night Race, which will take place on Saturday, May 16th. The drawing was held at 3PM in the Dirt Alliance booth and there are currently 39 entries for The FiberwerX 200. If you’re a 1450 racer you need to come race this race! There are nineteen 1450’s entered and growing. If you are a ½ 1600 Racer, you have to get in on the Hare & Hound Bonus Program. There is a chance to win $4,000 or more with just 10 entries. DRIVE Off Road Racing

We wanted to let you know about a very big bonus opportunity for class 1600 coming up on May 16th. $4000 Plus Class 1600 Bonus We are doing something a little different at the May 16th FiberwerX 200 with class 1600. We will be holding the first ever buggy hare and hound race. We are also adding an additional $100 per entry with no minimum number of entries. At 10 entries the total bonus and driver payback will hit $4000 and continue to go up from there. Even at only 5 entries the total payback and bonus is $1250. Class 1600 Hare and Hound Information We’ve added an additional bonus for the 1 / 2 1600 class at the FiberwerX 200 May 16th. No minimum entries. $100 per car and an additional $1500 at 10 entries. We will be doing an additional draw for 1 / 2 1600 on May 2nd at FiberwerX after the start order draw. The additional draw will be for the “1 / 2 1600 Hare”. All other 1 / 2 1600 racers will become the hounds. An additional $100 per entry will go into a bonus pot. No minimum entries for this bonus! 1st, 2nd and 3rd place that beat the hare will split the first ever DRIVE Hare and Hound bonus. If the hare wins they will keep the entire Hare bonus. The hare will start in whatever position they draw. We will also have special decals made up for the hare so that everyone knows who they have to beat. If the entries hit 10 you can add an additional $1500 to the bonus on top of the $150 per entry driver payback and the $100 per entry Hare Bonus. What it boils down to is you can win big $$ without the 10 car minimum. 10 cars = $4000 total bonus but 9 cars is still a $2250 bonus. Quality racing is alive and well in Plaster City with race promoter DRIVE, the host of the 3/21/09 Race-Dezert 250 race event. Yes, you read that right! We put on an off-road race! When Doug and Jon of DRIVE approached us in 2008 and pitched the idea of race-dezert.com coming on board as a title sponsor of one of their races in a new series we were a tad skeptical. But the pure drive, energy, and refreshing ideas made it an easy sell and we became believers of DRIVE. With our first race under our dezert hood, we still feel jazzed about what just happened.

Friday contingency started at about 4pm in the desert just a few feet away from the main pit and start/finish line. The weather did its job by providing a slight breeze through the otherwise grueling hot Imperial Valley desert. We set up a RDC booth alongside some of the other vendors and fired up the charcoal barbecue for free hot dogs, chips and drinks for everybody. We met lots of people on our website that we hadn’t met in person before so we can put faces with the names but watch out because now we know what you look like! And we might say, thank goodness for avatars! We had a great time meeting all of you!

To challenge the young upcoming racers, DRIVE held a TrophyKart race that evening. TrophyKarts are limited to children from about 5 to 16 years of age. They raced 5 laps of 1.5 miles each. TrophyKarts have been originally designed for short course racing and their belt drive system wears out almost as quickly as a tire in Nascar, hence the rather short TK race. There was a strong sportsman vibe and everyone gladly agreed to keep having TK races at future DRIVE events.

Saturday morning the race was scheduled to start at 8am but the ambulance DNF’ed before the race even began! The chartered ambulance for the day broke down in route to the event and instead of starting the race without it, Drive was forced to delay the start till 9:40AM. DRIVE handled the situation quickly and communicated well on their 2-way radio channel to inform everyone of the situation as it developed.

After the race start delay there were no more hiccups and the event was flawless for the remainder of the day.

Noah Quantrell

The biggest class was 1400 with 5 starters and 3 finishers. Noah Quantrell took the win. He had battled an overheating transmission that they had to cool down by spraying water over the radiators. Whatever they did seemed to help and they will be back for more down the road. Cameron Reeves had a flawless day securing him 2nd place. The über built T-100 of Dan Unsicker snapped rear wheel studs early in the race and the team scrambled to make emergency repairs on the course. Of course the broken wheel studs let the wheel go, destroying the rear caliber = no rear brakes for most of the race. They also, much like our governor, will be back.

Tucker Trench

A refreshing comeback for racing in Plaster City was the use of Tucker Trench. This historic part of the course hasn’t been used since the days of Fud and every racer we spoke with after the race loved it. “It’s scenic and makes you think you are racing somewhere in Baja” claimed Joe Patteli class 8 racer, finisher and winner of the RDC250. “The last time we raced here in Plaster City was in 1985 and we rolled our truck then…the same truck we raced today with better luck on our side”.

To pull off such a flawless day of racing takes lots of manpower and DRIVE had help from no less than 40 volunteers alongside the course manning road crossings and checkpoints. Elite Auto of El Cajon supplied “Check-Point Care-Packages” consisting of water, snacks and sandwiches. RDC added our own priceless collectible, soon to be historic, RDC250 themed event t-shirts to all racers and volunteers.

So what’s next? For DRIVE it will be the night race on May 16th. For RDC it will be a handful of events the following days. Don’t miss next years RDC250 at a desert near you.

Off-roader’s only come to the desert to play and don’t give a damn about the playground they are playing in. NOT! Don’t believe it? Read on.

Drive, the new startup promoter of the Imperial Valley, made their 2nd event a volunteer clean up instead of a race. Drive’s “Desert Scrub Down” was able to organize over 100 volunteers from the desert racing community. There were racers, race fans, kids, women and men alike.

ORW donated a great breakfast at around 8AM as volunteers signed in. Shortly after breakfast, Doug of Drive briefed the crowd and then everyone headed out to gather as much trash as possible. Four hours later an entire dumpster was filled up. Now to mix fun with duty there was a scavenger hunt for everybody to participate in. Whoever finds most of the items on the scavenger list gets declared the winner. Later in the early afternoon there where also raffle prizes donated by RDC and fellow offroad businesses and members to some of the lucky ones with the correct digits. The winner of the scavenger hunt was a family with four kids that found almost all of the items! Where on earth did they find the golf ball and balloon in the desert? Amazing whats out there!

Most of the trash found and collected by the clean up crews was non off-road related but unfortunately other trash was. The trash was a mixture of camp-side trash, roadside cans, bottles, old tires, household items and then some rather odd stuff.

“Off-roader’s get it done and are able to organize clean ups with large participation better then any other group” shared Daniel, an off-duty BLM officer, that stopped by on his own time to help the cleaning efforts. Success!

El Centro, CA – (Jan 22, 2009) – Plaster City will be heating up in March…thanks
in part to the first running of the Race-Dezert.com 250 on March 20th and 21st.
The Race-Dezert 250 will be the second race of the 2009 DRIVE Off-Road
Racing series.

After the resounding success of DRIVE’s first ever race the TROPHYLITE 200 on
Jan 17th, we are very proud to introduce the Race-Dezert.com 250 desert race.
Race-Dezert.com is the leading online news and discussion resource for the
hardcore desert racer and desert racing fan.   “We are very excited about Race-
Dezert.com being a race sponsor and supporting the desert racing community,”
explained DRIVE president Doug Wasser.  The Race-Dezert.com 250 will be
held in the Plaster City OHV area, home to some of the roughest desert terrain in
the Southwest.  Completing this race will be a constant battle of man and
machine vs. the desert terrain.  Drivers will have to constantly balance speed
with control and “knowing when to lift” (off the accelerator).   All standard desert
racing classes will be invited, as well as the recently added UTVs and Off-Road
Karts.  The Race-Dezert.com 250 will consist of two days of racing excitement!
Qualifying for selected classes will be on March 20th.  The main event will start
