Titled “King of the Motos,” this treacherous & technical invitational race is designed to rival the world renowned Erzberg. Lucas Oil’s Pro EnduroCross rider Colton Haaker, will be riding a 2012 Kawasaki KX™ 450F, going for the winner-takes-all $10,000 purse in an event where few would even dare to enter.

The King of the Hammers will take place in Johnson Valley, CA, and is considered the backyard desert playground to Lucas Oil’s headquarters in Corona. The event officially starts on February 3rd with racing and much activity lasting through Saturday the 11th. Expecting over 25,000 to attend, enthusiasts and racers of all sorts will converge on Mean’s Dry Lake creating temporary city type impression. Hammertown will feature a new main venue built around a short-course and hot-pit area. Monster Energy brought talent from around the globe to Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOOORRS) season finale.  Veteran short course racer Johnny Greaves made the long drive from Wisconsin while X Games gold medalist and rallycross star Liam Doran flew in from England and jumped right in to the fastest class in the series; the 4WD, 800 horsepower Pro4 Unlimited category.  Greaves and Doran joined the usual cast of Monster Energy LOORRS stars that includes Jeremy McGrath, Casey Currie, and Cameron Steele.

Saturday was the last race of the season and championships were on the line in all classes.  In the Pro Lite Unlimited class, Casey Currie and Cameron Steele took different paths in their quest for victory, with Currie’s truck powered by a factory sealed V8 engine and Steele’s sporting a high performance four cylinder.  Unfortunately the results were the same for the duo, as mechanical issues limited Steele to a seventh place finish and varying track conditions forced Currie, who was in second place for much of the race, back to fourth by the end.  When the dust settled Steele had finished third for the season and Currie finished fifth in points.

McGrath was coming off a win from the last LOORRS stop in Las Vegas and looking to repeat, but after running under the caution flag half way through the race he was shoved into Carl Renezeder on the first corner of the restart and forced to limp around the track for the remainder.  His injured Monster Energy 2WD truck could not make full use of the 800 horsepower and 35-inch tires and crossed the line in seventh place, putting him in fourth place for the season.  Neither Doran nor Greaves were running for season points in Pro4, so they had nothing to lose by going all out.  Greaves got mixed up in traffic early on and came away with damaged steering, but newcomer Liam Doran banged with Todd LeDuc lap after lap, hanging with the short course veteran right to the checkers to finish in fifth place.  “Short course has huge jumps, trucks sliding sideways, and lots of passing,” Doran commented.    “This is what every kid wants to watch.”

On Sunday the Lord (or at least LOORRS) made cup races, where buggies and trucks, 2WD and 4WD, ran on the track at the same time for five figure paychecks.  Cameron Steele chose to park his Pro Lite Unlimited truck for teammate Brandon Bailey’s Super Buggy, while Currie made suspension adjustments to best the competition.  Steele’s gamble did not pay off, but Currie finished third in a field of 27 drivers despite having zero visibility on the last lap after his hood folded back over the windshield.

The final race of the year pitted the Pro2 Unlimited trucks against the Pro4 Unlimiteds in the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup, with the faster 4WD trucks forced to start half a lap back.  Liam Doran  started dead last amongst the 25 truck field but weaved his way past half the competitors before his transmission called it quits.  Carnage came quickly and hardly a lap went by without a caution or black flag coming out.  Jeremy McGrath was in second place with two turns to go on the final lap when his Monster Energy truck was clipped from behind by Carl Renezeder and passed by two competitors in a controversial finish.  McGrath had some words with Carl and the officials had Jeremy’s back, DQ’ing Renezeder and awarding McGrath third place for a $7500 paycheck.  “The toughest part is having someone else dictate your race,” McGath commented.  “Third isn’t bad but next time things will go differently.”

One might assume that racers would try to preserve their vehicles for the big money on the line for Sunday’s Lucas Oil Challenge Cup races, but that was not the case on Saturday. Crews were burning the midnight oil getting their vehicles back together for the $100,000 that was on the line on Sunday. The first truck race was Super Lite, and with the normal car count (unlike the other cup races where classes were combined) they actually had a cleaner race than Saturday!

Austin Kimbrell started on the pole and jumped out to an early lead ahead of Kyle Lucas and RJ Anderson before Mike McCarthy ended up on his lid at Turn 1 on the second lap. They restarted the race and only one more lap went by before Kyle Lucas took the lead from Kimbrell, but he bicycled in Turn 3 and RJ Anderson capitalized in his Walker Evans Racing truck. Once he had a clean track RJ walked away from the rest of the chaos unfolding behind him on his way to a $10,000 pay day. Jesse Johnson rolled and was t-boned by Jason Ellis and Chad George got put into the fence when going three wide through the last turn on the truck. Despite getting bunched up no one had anything for RJ Anderson, and Austin Kimbrell battled with Patrick Clark but eventually had to settle for third.

The next race combined the Pro Lite and Pro Buggy classes. The trucks started in front of the buggies, and despite the disadvantage Cameron Steele showed his true colors running his buggy. The starting order inverted season standings for the top ten in each class and then put the remaining vehicles at the back of the pack. 27 vehicles took the track with Matt Cook and Jacob Pearson starting in the pressure cooker on the first row. Corey Sisler jumped out to an early lead ahead of Kyle LeDuc until the yellow came out when Austin Kimbrell rolled on the step up jump after Turn 3.

Kyle put some distance between the rest of the field and his Rockstar Energy Drink / Toyo Tires truck with Sisler, Brandt, Deegan, and Casey Currie following. It was looking like the trucks were going to walk away with all of the podium spots early on, but Justin “Bean” Smith was methodically working his way through the crowd. On Turns 4 and 5 in particular, Bean was able to carry speed in his Competitive Metals / Metal Mulisha AlumiCraft and pick off trucks like a short course assassin. Pro Lite Unlimiteds started dropping out at the race went on, first with Deegan, then LeDuc experience suspension failure after hard contact, and the engine in Sisler’s AEM Electronics truck going away with a huge James Bond-style smokescreen. This paved the way for Bean to take the $20,000 victory with Brandt in second and Casey Currie somehow finishing in third despite hood covering the entire windshield and blocking visibility out of his Monster Energy truck. On the podium Brandt had some words for Deegan, but the animosity on and off the track was not limited to just these two.

The grand finale of the season was the Pro2 Unlimited versus Pro4 Unlimited Lucas Oil Cup presented by Toyota. Robby Woods started on the pole next to Jeff Geiser. Carl Renezeder chose to drive his 2WD Lucas Oil / General Tires Ford, feeling that the starting position was a bigger advantage than 4WD. On Saturday, the Pro4 Unlimiteds ran about two seconds faster than the Pro2 Unlimiteds with lap times around 45 seconds. The Pro4s started half a lap back from the Pro2s, with Curt LeDuc starting next to rival Adrian Cenni.

Robby Woods jumped out to an early lead in the Lucas Slick Mist /Superchips Chevy and held it through the first half of the race ahead of Carl Renezeder. It took a few laps for the fastest Pro4s to catch the Pro2s, but the caution came out when Rodrigo Ampudia rolled the Papas and Beer Ford multiple times on Turn 4. While the tight right hand Turn 3 claimed most the victims on Saturday, Turn 5 was the killer on Sunday. It was the final turn on the track after the either / or section when the two lines converged before the main straight.

The caution bunched up the field, and Kyle LeDuc and Adrian Cenni were taking advantage of the situation and chewing through the Pro2s. Kyle seemed to pass a competitor in every corner in his Rockstar Energy Drink / Makita Tools Ford and set the fast lap for the race. Unfortunately right after taking the lead, Kyle lost a right rear wheel, ending his chances for victory and causing Evan Evans to roll in the same spot Ampudia has tossed his truck just a few laps prior. This put Robby Woods back up front until Todd LeDuc rolled Woods on Turn 3, causing him to get black flagged. That put Carl Renezeder and Adrian Cenni up front, but a questionable call saw Cenni black flagged for contact with Carl. Instead of going to the back of the field Cenni just drove off the track in disgust!

All of the drama opened the door for Robert “Fig” Naughton to take the lead late in the race in his Stronghold Motorsports Pro2. He was followed by Stronghold teammate Jeremy McGrath, Carl Renezeder, and Brian Deegan with one lap to go. On the final turn Carl got into the back of McGrath and unsettled his truck, but got by to finish second. McGrath was fuming and drove right up to Carl’s door while the officials scrambled to make a decision on the contact. Once the smoke had cleared Carl was pushed back to 9th and Deegan took second for $20,000 with McGrath in third for $10,000 and Naughton taking home the big $30,000 paycheck.

That wrapped up the 2011 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series with action and drama up to the very end. We don’t expect any of these guys to forgive or forget in the off season, so expect even more trash talking, banging, and wide open racing in 2012.

2011 was a big year for the Arizona Short Course Series, with the addition of the Kingman track and Firebird track, plus a record number of entries and more people attending each race. The points were tight and the rivalries growing, round eight was shaping up for great finale.

The final race of the season was no exception. With 109 entries, it was the biggest race in ASCC history. Race day was Saturday November 12^th, with cooler weather finally setting into Phoenix, racers were excited and eager to race. Even in the practice and heat races there was plenty of crashes and carnage. First up to kick off the final race was the utvs. The utv class has been growing and growing every race this year. In the end Jason Weller dominated the sr1 class and took the championship. In utv unlimited Ty Wolfskill took first and won the battle, but Adam Gruender won the war and took the championship. Next up was the desert buggy class. With the points battle coming down to the last race, it made for an exciting final race. In the end Ryan Therkildsen took the win, Kevin Streety took second and Austin McIntyre got third.

After that was the exciting finale to the trophy kart series, with four classes there was plenty of action. In junior 2, Parker Steele battled it out for the win. Isabella Naughton took second and Haylee Melton swept third. In outlaw trophy kart Orion Rodriguez got the win after Ryan Anderson was bumped down to second due to passing under a yellow flag. Mia Chapman took third and claimed the championship. Then the junior 1 trophy karts hit the track running and after a fierce battle, “Scooter” Gavin Harlen grabbed the win, with Conner McMullen taking second and the championship. Cole Dexheimer finished third. Last but not least was the modified trophy karts. High flying action and intense battles made for an awesome final race. Mitch Guthrie Jr, edged out Mitchell Dejong for the win. Jeff Hoffman got third.

Next was the stars of short course, the unlimited buggy and truck classes. The race started off with a roar, cars and truck launching through the air. In the end, Wade Wyman beat Eddie Tafoya by .410 of a second for the win a photo finish. Bradley Morris took third in his first time in his v-8 prolite. One of the most popular classes in the ASCC series took to the track next, the open v-8s. With the close points battle between Shaun Davis and Kevin Mcmurray coming down to the wire it was an awesome race. Kevin Mcmurray took the win and Shaun Davis got second with Kevin Ketchner taking third in his Dodge Diesel nicknamed the fumigator due to the massive amounts of black smoke the truck produces. In mini mod, Sheldon Creed got the win over Mike McCarthy, and Stacy Pike earned a hard fought third. In formula 4×4 Jack Adams took the win and the championship, after a great race with 7 entries in the class. The final buggy class to take the track was the limited buggy class, and every race it is always and awesome show. Always having at least eight entries in the class made for great wheel to wheel racing. Dillion Ayers arose victorious winning the race and the championship.

Finally the last race of the day the grassroots racing of the stock full size and mini division. With nine entries in each class, it was the biggest turnout in history and the racing would be nothing short of incredible. In the end, Jason Ladder took his first win in stock truck, beating out Will Munns in the race, however Munn did take the championship. Chad Hummer took third place. In stock mini, Neil Weaver won the battle and the war in his Toyota, taking first in the race and the championship. Shaun Davis took second only a few second behind Weaver in his first appearance in stock mini. Keith Brinbaum took a hard fought battle. That would conclude an amazing second season of the ASCC, with the announcement of the resurrection of the ADRA Arizona Desert Racing Association. Big things are going to come the racing world in 2012.

It was that time of the year again, Off Road Expo time! The chance for everyone in the off road industry to all gather together and show off their latest and greatest concepts and creations. Eye candy was the phrase of the weekend and there was tons of it spread throughout 3 buildings and everywhere in between.

Something new this year at the Off Road Expo was “Dirt Theater” it was a 100 seat enclosed “theater” where fans could stop by and watch the Mint 400 TV show and Dezert People 9. On the way in fans were greeted by lovely ladies and some superstars of off road who they were able to take their picture with.

Race-Dezert.com had a bit of a refreshed look for the expo this year and along with it came celebrity’s throughout each day sighing autographs for their fans. You were also able to pick up a copy of Dezert People 9 which was the new off road video at the expo this year. RDC also had a cool bottle opener that also doubles as a dzus tool!

Camburg had their new Kinetik Trophy Truck chassis on display and it was in the running for top “work of art” at the expo! Their current truck was on display outside at the General Tire booth.

One of the more popular parts of the weekend was the Miss Off Road Expo contest on Sunday afternoon. A handful of ladies from all over the US entered in what would basically be a bikini contest with some very cheesy questions. They had a panel of judges which included the drummer from Poison. In the end Amanda from North Carolina ended up as the winner.

There was a lot more eye candy all over the expo this year and we can’t wait until next year to see what Lucas Oil and the Off Road Expo have in store! Be sure to check out the rest of the pictures below.

A short three gap since the last ASCC Speedworld Race, under the light, in Whittman Arizona for round six; Was a very short period for race teams to get their cars fixed and prepped for the this last weekend. Round 7 of the ASCC would not only be a day race, but the second to last race in the season, and with points leads coming down to the wire, it was anyone’s race.

First to take the track was the desert buggy class, with eight entries it was a great race to watch with a lot of close battles. In the end, Kevin Sullivan took the win, with Kevin Streety sweeping second and Kenn McIntyre grabbing third. Following the desert buggy class, was the utv class, Jason Weller battled with Dan Kelly for the better part of the race. When the dust settled Jason Weller came out on top in first place, with Dan Kelly coming in second. In Unlimited utv Adam Gruender battle and took first, with Shane Miller taking a close second and Emillio Ruago taking third.

Next up was the trophy kart classes took the track, and with a new track being used, to avoid the pile-up in front of the moguls, it was an exciting race to watch to say the least. First up was the the junior 2 class, there were many close battles but in the end Weston Schuck took the win. Isabella Naughton contained her winning ways and took second. Parker Steele grabbed a respectable third place spot. In outlaw trophy kart Mia Chapman kept up her winning ways and took first over Ryan Anderson who got second and Austin Kuehl took third. Following junior 2 was the Junior 1 class, and the carnage ensued, In the end Conner McMullen took first, Kali Kinsman brought it in for second and Daely Pentico charged for third.

After the trophy karts, was one of the most popular classes in the ASCC series the limited buggy class, with 11 entries, it was a good turn out with lost of door banging action. Kevin McCullough took the hole shot and grabbed the lead most of the race; However towards the end of the race, Dillion Ayers took the lead and the win getting first place. Hayden Melton took a close second and Kent Lothringer snatched third place.

Finally was the two most popular events in the ASCC, the open v-8, mini mod, formula 4×4, and the stock classes. First up was the open v-8, mini mod, and formula 4×4. With a McMurray Davis rivalry the  crowd was ready for an exciting race. In the end Stacey Pike took the win in mini mod, with Mike McCarthy taking second and Mike Wilkins taking third in his first race. In open v-8 Kevin Mcmurray, Shaun Davis and, Kevin Ketchner, battled door to door most of the race, not giving an inch. Shaun Davis grabbed the win in his S-10 just over .7 of a second faster than, Kevin McMurray who took second, Kevin Ketchner took third in his Dodge Diesel. In formula 4×4 Jack Adams rose victorious taking the win. Jayson Mitchell grabbed second , and John Brock charged on for third.

Last but not least was the heart and soul of the ASCC the grassroots racing of the stock full-size and stock mini classes; and with eight stock full trucks and five stock minis it was another great race in ASCC. With the return of the stock truck pioneer Kyle Green he brought it to the table. After a close battling race Will Munns took the win in his Ford pickup. Jake Munns held off Kyle Green for second in his black ford bronco, and Kyle Green swept third in his Ford bronco.

In stock mini, there was plenty of hype with the season coming to a close and everybody wanting the championship title. The race started out fierce with all truck firing on all cylinders, charging every jump and every corner. Finally a winner emerged, the veteran dirt track racer Brian McCutcheon took the win but was later disqualified after refusing to let his motor get claimed. However second place Keith Brinbaum was granted with the win. Jake Yubeta took home his first podium in second place, and Ray Devnport swept third. That would conclude an exciting day of racing out at Speedworld Offroad Park.

Saturday, October 1^st saw a diverse and highly energized group of racers assembled for the final race of the Lucas Oil, Southern California Regional series at Glen Helen raceway in San Bernardino. Some came to increase their points lead and hopefully take home a championship while others, with nothing to lose, would be going all out for the win. The regional series has a run-whatcha-brung format that welcomes all types of vehicles from typical short course classes like super buggys and pro-2’s to 4 wheel drive, Ultra4 rock racers. The result is strange mix of vehicles on the track at times but the ultimate goal is to both help develop drivers for the professional short course ranks and to give everyone who can pass tech a chance to compete door to door on a groomed, purpose-built track.

To add to the already charged atmosphere the 1450 trucks would be back on the track for the Beehive Sports Bar 1450 classic II.  The classic would pit 25 long travel desert trucks against each other for bragging rights, trophies, cash and prizes. Whatever the motivation, the racing was intense in every class. You can’t get any closer than in the Black Rhino Unlimited UTV class where Tyler Winbury and Taylor George wound up tied for the season at 199 points each to earn co-champion honors. Andrea Pathiakis came from behind to take the Icon Vehicle Dynamics Mini Stock truck class over Garrett Goorsky by only 2 points. The competition in the Beehive Classic was tougher than ever and yet Ryan Desautels backed up his win in the inaugural event with another victory to remain undefeated. At the end of the day there were champions crowned, egos bruised and a few battered vehicles but not a bad time had by anyone. The happy hour and concert after the race was a chance to celebrate the winners and to make plans for the next season that won’t come soon enough for many.

Lucas Oil Products, Inc – the fastest growing Oil products company in the world announced today that it has purchased control of cable TV Network MAVTV as part of its ongoing expansion program. Lucas Oil will make a significant financial investment in MAVTV and has plans underway to improve both the quality of the programming and the value of the Network.

Lucas Oil has been one of MAVTV’s key shareholders and strategic partners since their initial investment in the network in 2008. MAVTV now joins the Lucas Oil Studio family of programming which already produces more than 350 Hours of Motorsports and Lifestyle television programming annually.

According to Bob Patison, Executive Vice President, Lucas Oil Products, Inc., “For MAVTV we’re focusing on three main areas including significant programming buys from major studios, exclusive new programming and an aggressive marketing campaign to improve consumer awareness.”

Lucas Oil’s future plans for MAVTV will utilize its extensive portfolio of marketing relationships. The campaign will include local media buys and prominent brand positioning within Lucas Oil properties such as Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, plus grass roots marketing at over 400 racing events throughout the country. These include Lucas Oil’s Off Road Racing Series, Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series, Lucas Oil Pro Pulling events and multiple teams in NHRA. In addition, the MAVTV logo is featured on millions of Lucas Oil products sold each month in over 20,000 retail locations across the United States.

As MAVTV is absorbed into the Lucas Oil family of companies in the next few months, a slate of investments in both programming and infrastructure will be announced.

Kyle Leduc laid down fast lap of the day in his Pro 4 with a lap time of 54.223, over a second faster over Renezeder who would be next fastest in Pro 4, as well as grabbing the pole in Pro 2 with a time of 56.501. In the Prolite class, Chris Brandt edged Brian Deegan, and in Pro Buggy Justin Davis took the top spot just barely beating Justin “Bean” Smith.

The desert heat was in full force today and and the forecast isn’t letting up for tomorrows racing. Lucas Oil changed the normal schedule around with Modified Karts starting off at 8:30am, and the last race of the day, Pro 2, starting at 2:30pm, so make sure you listen to the broadcast live here on RDC tomorrow.

Off-road manufacturer representatives will be on-site to demonstrate and educate attendees on all the latest vehicles and accessories. The Rally That Came Back From the Dead!!!!

The 2011 Mendocino Rally is based in Ukiah, CA came back from a 30 year’s of non-competition. The rally had over 54 miles of hard-packed twisty stages contained within the South Cow Mountain off-road vehicle park.

First of all, David Sterckx also came back into rallying at this event from being out of competition as being the two time Belgian rally champion with his co-driver Karen Jankowski. Which they did very well for the first five stages but a clutch problem started to happen and took out the team for the rest of the day. What was so impressive was that other teams were helping Sterckx/Jankowski get up one the hills to try to start the stage with all of the help but had to withdraw from the event as a DNF due to mechanical problems.

But right behind David and Karen were Alex Radenmacher and Jeani Yi who were ecstatic being able to take the lead in the event in their Subaru 2.5 RS and win. Alex went from a 2 wheel drive in previous competition to an 4 wheel drive Open Lite class. Alex has for sometime really started showing his driving capability and for the past two events including this rally that he is in strong contention to do very well in several series that are part of these events which include Rally Car Regional, Bilstein SWRC and CRS series.

As Alex put it as quoted; “The return of the Mendocino Rally was an amazing experience for Jeana and I and the experience started before the stages. Jeana and I were driving our rally car to the event, which is always a bit of a gamble, and this time I lost. Somehow my Axle nut fell off about 5 minutes out of Yuba city, my car veered strangely as I was driving straight, so I pulled over to see what the problem was. I jacked up the front of the car and to my horror I discovered you could easily push the top of the tire, changing the camber and tow, about 2 inches. I figured my spindle/ wheel bearing was bad and I would have to tow back to Yuba City . I called around the rally community. Sean Lane had not left yet and was going to find me a spindle so I could continue my way. And while I was waiting for a call back, I saw a large box truck turning around and driving up the farm entrance I had parked in. But I saw a max attack Tshirt and I knew it was rallyists ! It was Adam Crane and Sean Medcroft they wanted to see if I needed help. YES I DID. When I went to show them the problem I then and only then noticed it was a missing axle nut. I got excited and called Sean lane back with the good news. I dug through my spares and found an axle nut that I could use! But I lacked the proper tools to install it securely, but Adam and Sean quickly dug through their truck and presto! My car was put back together and we could all continue on! Just before the welcome party … I locked my keys in my car, while telling a crew member “its important to hand out your spare keys early, so you don’t lock yourself out of your car… uhm… uh oh … I think I just locked myself out” we managed to find a sneaky way to unlock the door. Jeani and I quickly gave him the spare keys…

The welcome party was great and I got a history lesson by our own Bill Rodgers, I was excited to see a lot of my Northern California rally cross buddies and others from the north Nevada rally! When we left the first MTC all I couldn’t get over how awesome our rally community is , my start was only because of my competitors ! at one of the stage starts I saw Kris-Jon, the new rally driver who unfortunately totaled his car at NNR. In true rally spirit he was already out there on the other side of the time cards. He told me he was building a new car ! Awesome! The roads were amazing, Grade A, and A is for awesome, great job to Jim for putting on an awesome rally! Great people, amazing roads, good weather. fun was had by all. Jeana and I found ourselves giggling like school kids. The roads practically force you to link your drifts together ! With a little bit of attrition we found ourselves in the lead! I tried to not think about it and just drive. On the last stage who was nipping my heels? Adam Crane! He had an amazing last stage, only 6 seconds off of my time with less HP and less drive tires and considering the uphill start . I think he drove the last stage better than I did. The scoreboard showed me on top at the after party, lots of free drinks due to the awesome organization of Jim and we had one hell of a party. Again, big thanks to Jim and all the rally workers, thanks to Adam, Sean, and Sean! Thanks to Rally-America, and also a huge thanks to my GF and navigator for putting up with all of that, and for riding in a rally car 600 miles round trip !”

Alex had to say a lot for this win at Mendocino Red Tail Rally. Congratulations to Alex and Jeana..
Now the other Open Lite Class competitor was Kevin Kardos/Corey Salsbery who did very well in finishing 5th overall and second in their class in their Subaru Impreza. This team was very happy about their results but would have enjoyed it even more so winning the event. They were very ready to have great results in competition.

In the Group 2 class; George Doganis/Tom Smith in a Honda Civic was head to head with Tom and Dick Moser in a VW Golf. This same scenerios was playing out between these two from the previous rally- North Nevada Rally and spilled over into this event. At one stage both finished on the same time…that is a rarity to see and both only had seconds separating their scores. But in the end; the Mosers retired with a broken axle. Right behind them was Adam Crane/Sean Medcroft in their Toyota Corolla who took second place and really showing they have the right stuff to watch out for …with Andrew and Robin Lockhart in their VW Golf who in the end took third place.

The most unfortunate mishap was Roger and Dave Matthews in their VW Rabbit GTI. They came out from Colorado to compete and were doing very well in the early stages but ended up sideways off the road and had to watch as spectators. Roger came out anyway to see relatives and still had a great time despite the DNF. Roger and Dave we hope to see you again with that great spirit that you have always shown at each and every event.

In all, everyone had a great time and ended up back at the awards ceremony enjoying a Red Tail or two at the brewing company that sponsored the event.

Yesterday the racers put on a great show for the fans, and while there wasn’t as many in attendance today, those that were here gave witness to some of the best racing of the season. In the Pro 2 class Deegan, Woods, Adler, MacCachren, Ampudia, and Renezender all put on one hell of a show. Rob MacCachren (who I can finally spell right without having to look it up) looked as though he would pull ahead, nosed in on the rhythm section giving up his lead. The Top 5 all showed wear and tear as fiberglass was a’plenty on the course, but it was Brian Deegan who came away with his first Pro 2 win of his career.

Justin “Bean” Smith showed everyone why he is one of the young guns in the sport with a bright future ahead of him. Any teams or companies looking to get someone in a Pro 2 or Pro 4 take notice. Pro 4 had some great battles as well but it was a repeat of Round 9 with Rick Huseman grabbing the top spot.

We could go on and on about all the exciting things that happened today at Glen Helen, but we think the most memorable is Cameron Steele getting his first win in the Pro-Lite class. An emotional PAB dedicated the win to Ox saying while he was happy to get his first win, it is still tough to celebrate without Ox being there to celebrate with him. The past few rounds Cameron has come very close to winning only to have someone spin him out, not catching a break, but tonight he showed that those leads were not a fluke.

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Returns

to Utah’s Marvelous Miller Motorsports Park

First event on new MMP Off Road Short Course

TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (June 21, 2011) – The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series returns to Miller Motorsports Park this weekend, June 25-26, and will have a brand-new, permanent track on which to compete.

Following last year’s very popular debut at Miller Motorsports Park, track officials decided to build a permanent, high-speed off-road facility to host the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series and other off-road activities.

“We have developed a great relationship with Lucas Oil,” said John Larson, General Manager of Miller Motorsports Park, “and their race last year was so well received and generated such positive feedback that we decided to make the commitment to build them a permanent home at Miller Motorsports Park that can also be used for our other off-road events and activities.”

The track was designed and built in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, and promises to provide fans with even more excitement and spectacular racing.

“Miller Motorsports Park is a first-class facility in every respect,” said Bob Patison, Executive Vice President of Lucas Oil Products, Inc. ”It is racer- and fan-friendly, with amenities typically not found at most race venues. The Miller group has made a commitment to the sport of Short Course Off Road Racing, as evidenced by the new purpose-built track.  Our Series Director, Tony Vanillo, designed the track to challenge the racers and provide the fans with an up-close experience that will not soon be forgotten.”

“We can’t wait to see the Lucas Oil trucks and buggies on the track,” said Larson. “We think the fans in Utah are going to love this facility, and that the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series could well be the fastest-growing event that we offer.”

The track is just under a mile long, with large banked turns and the fastest straightaways of all the Lucas Oil Off Road tracks, plus a Mammoth Table Top and a six-pack rhythm section. Covered grandstands will provide guests with shade and a view of the entire course. VIP packages are also available.

As was the case last year, the action will be fast and furious, with high-flying vehicles going wheel to wheel and door to door, fighting for every inch of track space. The paddock will be open to spectators at no charge, and fans can chat with the teams and drivers while they prepare their vehicles. The series promotes a family-friendly atmosphere, and last year a number of lucky fans got to take home discarded pieces of bodywork autographed by the various drivers.

The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series event gets underway on Saturday, with a full schedule of practice, qualifying and main-event races for all 11 classes on each day. The gates will open at 10 a.m. on both days, with main-event races starting at 12:30 p.m. and on-track action ending by 6 p.m.

Adult tickets for this event are priced at $30 per day or $50 for a two-day pass. Tickets for kids aged 12 and under are priced at $10 per day or $15 for a two-day pass. Kids aged three and under will be admitted free of charge.

Jimmy Owens won this years Show-Me 100 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. on May 28^th holding off Scott Bloomquist by a half car length at the finish to win the $30,000 first place prize. The race was exciting from start to finish with numerous lead changes and fans standing on their feet as Owens and Bloomquist were side by side coming to the checkered flag.

If you went Kingman Arizona a week ago, short course racing is not something a lot of people knew about; However, after the weekend of June 10^th and 11^th the town is buzzing and awaiting the return of the ASCC/Lucas Oil Regional Arizona Series. After an exciting weekend of close racing and plenty of carnage.

The Kingman track is located at the local fairgrounds and is very unique, especially to short course racers. The just over a mile track has eight turns, three of which are “S” style turns, and one which is a monster off camber/banked turn. Also the track has two table top jumps, a leap style jump, and a couple great whoop sections. A very spectator friendly track which was easily visible from the grandstands.

First off the line for the main events was the 1600 cars the Desert Limited class, With the land rush start and eleven entries it was an exciting wheel to wheel race. In the end “Flyin” Ryan Therkildsen came out on top in the first place spot, Mike Simpson would battle and beat Brandon Birmingham for the second and third place spot. Next up was the UTV class, and with more and more UTV’s showing up and the return of the Honda Pilot group it was another exciting race. Jason Weller took the win in SR1 with Emilio Rubago coming in second. In The Modified class Adam Gruender fended off Ty Wolfskill for the win and Duane Bartlett swept the third place spot.

Then it was back to the buggies, Short Course Limited and Unlimited classes. After a dispute from one of the car builders, about the Limited buggies being faster, they started in a land rush start in front of the Unlimited class. Then the race started with cars roaring off and around the track. Hayden Melton jumped out with an early lead, but then was over taken by Dillon Ayers who won the Limited Buggy class, with Kent Lothinger taking second and Ali Banning getting a well deserved third place. Ron Dalke defied the odds and took first overall in the race, Carl Rohrer was closing in on Dalke but had a wild crash in turn 8 at the start-finish. He was ok but his car was unable to finish, Brent McKee took second and Tony Scott got third.

The long awaited Stock Full-size and Mini race was finally here, with 5 stock Full size’s and 4 Mini’s it was one of the best races this year. In Stock Full-size the brother’s Will and Jake Munns battled most of the race but Chad Hummer came up from third and got in the mix. In the end Will Munns took the win, with Chad Hummer taking second and Greg Baum taking third. With Brendan Beeler joining the military and two other veteran trucks scared to show, Will Munns may take the championship. In stock mini another epic race ensued with all four trucks launching over the front straight side by side. It was a close battle and Neil Weaver took the early lead but electrical problems would put him out early. In the end Brian McCutcheon took the win in his first race, with his truck being built in just five weeks before the race. Keith Brinbaum took second in the SDHQ sponsored stock mini.

Round 5 of the Lucas Oil Offroad Racing Series took place today at Glen Helen Raceway. Emotions ran high as Jeff “Ox” Kargola was honored in a special ceremony to remember his life and how many people he touched along the way. A sky plane wrote the phrase “We Love U Ox”, while Chappy Steve Hanson and Cameron Steele each said a few words about Jeff. General Tire’s Dana Zamallao presented Cam with a special edition Oakley watch that was for Ox after winning his first race in the Superlite class. After the ceremony Cameron did one lap in Jeff’s truck, followed by Doves being released into the air.

In racing action Carl Renezeder was back to his winning ways taking first in both the Pro 4 and Pro 2 class. In the Pro 2 race he had a great battle all race long with Rob MacCachren, but held his ground and was able to stay ahead of the fellow veteran. Rodrigo Ampudia and Robert Naughton were battling hard for third place when they had contact on the final table top before the finish, and Brian Deegan was able to sneak by for a podium finish. Robby Gordon only made it two laps before he had to pull off with some type of mechanical problems, that or he wanted to watch the NASCAR Allstar race on TV. The big question of the day was where Pistol Pete was in his Pro 2, wait, this just in, no one asked. ( j o k e )

To go along with his third place finish in Pro 2, Metal Mulisha’s Brian Deegan also won the prolite race with a slick inside pass on Chris Brandt on the final lap. It was a Rockstar Energy sandwich as Kyle Leduc finished third in class. The question on the podium between racers was “So who wants to put a V8 in their truck?” Questionable for tomorrows race is Casey Currie as his truck was seen leaving Glen Helen on a trailer. Are they taking it back to the shop to fix something or will he run his 4 cylinder truck tomorrow?

In Pro 4 Rick Huseman was looking like he would walk away with another win, but after the mandatory yellow let the field catch back up to him, Carl Renezeder was able to get around him and finish on top. At the podium a fan of Rick Huseman had him autograph a tattoo of a Monster Energy truck on his forearm. The tattoo was well done so you know it wasn’t done in a prison or someones basement, but it begs a few questions. What if Monster Energy goes out of business? If the guy decides he likes another energy drink better does he get someone to turn the Monster Energy logo into a rose? And finally, wouldn’t it be ironic if he was drunk on Redbull and Vodka when he got that tattoo?

Lucas Oil Offroad Racing is officially underway at the legendary Glen Helen Raceway. Kyle Leduc laid down the fastest lap of qualifying in his Pro 4 with a time of 43.982, the only person to break the 43 second mark. A few notables were missing in Bryce Menzies, Johnny Greaves, and Marty Hart, but Robby Gordon made his short course debut laying down a respectable 5th place in the Pro 2 class. It was also the first time the Prolite class was allowed to run V8 motors, however only Casey Currie was able to break the top 5.

Opening ceremonies start at 2pm tomorrow with a special tribute to Ox, followed by a full day of racing in his honor. If you can’t make it to the track make sure to keep RDC open as we will have live play by play.

Expectations were high for Robby Woods coming into Rounds 3 and 4 of Lucas Oil Off Road Racing (LOORRS) at Speedworld Off Road Park in Surprise, Arizona. Woods had pulled off a third place finish in Round 1 of racing and was sitting in the top ten in points and looking to advance. The Woods team fine tuned the Lucas Slick Mist / Superchips Chevrolet in the month between races, changing the gearing for Speedworld and revising the front suspension geometry. These changes and Robby’s natural abilities allowed him to qualify second in Pro-2 Unlimited for Round 3 of racing, which put him on the second row in his No. 99 Chevrolet.

The race proved to be a wild one, with the veteran Woods having to focus as much on avoiding lap traffic and rookie drivers as chasing down the leaders in front of him. Half way through the race a wheel came off the truck in front of Robby, leaving him no place to go but over it. “Hitting a large object at speed is about the only way to can damage a General Grabber,” Woods explained. “That forced me into the hot pits for a quick tire change.” Unfortunately, officials thought that the tire change was a bit too fast, and penalized Robby 30 seconds for speeding on the pit road. This discouraging turn of events put Woods a lap down on the leaders, but he was still able to collect valuable season points in his quest for the Pro-2 championship.

Situations like Robby Woods faced on Saturday are commonplace in top tier short course racing, but what separates champions from the rest of the pack his how they handle adversity. Woods’ talented crew worked diligently on fixing the damage from Saturday’s race while Robby prepared for the next challenge that lay before him: Round 4 of racing on Sunday. More bad news came in qualifying on Sunday when the transmission let go behind Woods’ 900 horsepower Chevrolet race engine. Despite the setback, Robby still managed to qualify sixth and his excellent support crew had the transmission replaced in the No. 99 Lucas Slick Mist / Superchips Chevrolet before the green flag dropped.

After pushing too hard on Saturday and being penalized for it, Robby Woods took a less aggressive approach in Round 4, allowing the competition to succumb to the brutal terrain at Speedworld. Lap after lap, Robby moved forward in the running order, battling with Jeremy McGrath and Bryce Menzies throughout the second half of the race. This brought the sold out crowd to their feet, screaming with excitement at the non-stop action. When the checkers came out, Woods finished less than five seconds behind the winner. This put Robby in third place, on the podium with Rob MacCachren and Jeremy McGrath, distinguished company to say the least.

ASCC Round 3 at Speedworld

March 31st – April 1st marked the return of the ASCC, Lucas Oil Regional Series. This race was held at the Arizona Speedworld Offroad Park for a weekend of exciting door banging action. With the track being changed up the week prior, this race would prove to be one of the most exciting ASCC races yet. The moguls were one of the major changes that threw the drivers for a loop during practice, with many drivers almost losing control as they tried to find the best line to defeat the moguls.

Saturday brought race day and high temps, being 95 degrees out it was definitely a warm day! Not only the temps were high so was the car count even with the California Regional race going on the same weekend. With almost 70 entries It made for some exciting racing. First to take the track were the desert buggies, and this race had the closest battles this year in the desert buggy class. In the end Will Wing came out on top and took first with Alan League coming in second and Kenny McIntyre grabbing third.

Next up was the UTV class with the return of the Honda Pilots; they would wreak havoc on the rest of the UTV field. In the SR1 class Jason Weller dominated and took the win, with Keaton Swane taking second. In the Unlimited UTV class Adam Greunder would edge out the father son team of Ty and Mike Wolfskill for the win.

After the UTVs cleared the track it was time for the high flying Modified Trophy Karts. Mitchell Dejong fresh off his win from Firebird showed everybody how it was done and won the race; but not without Brock Heger taking a close second place. Elliot Watson took a hard earned third place finish. Next up was the Junior one class with so many karts in this race there would be plenty of carnage and rollovers to satisfy the crowd. Broc Dickerson edged out Elliot Watson for the win and Connor McMullen was closing fast in third. Then came out the Junior two and Arizona Outlaw Trophy Kart Classes. Isabella Naughton showed her experience and took the win with Brock Heger coming in second and Chase Ryan round out third place. In the Az Outlaw Class Ryan Anderson beat Mia Chapman for the win; with Alyssa Ryan close behind for third.

The high speed action of the Limited and Unlimited Short Course Buggies took the track next. The Veteran Patrick Pendley would take the win in Unlimited Buggy, with Tucson native Ron Dalke taking second and the Wildman Carl Rohrer taking third. In Limited Buggy young gun Dillon Ayers raced to the finish and took the win. Ali Banning took second and Ryan May came in third.

Next was the highly anticipated Stock Mini, Mini Mod and Open V-8 race. Everybody was excited to see these trucks roar around the course together. In Stock Mini Neil Weaver took the win over Keith Brinbaum. In Mini Mod Paul Holguin took the win in his final race in his truck. John Henslee took second and Austin Kimbrell took third in his Superlite.

In Open V-8 the trucks battled it out for every position, first or last it didn’t matter it was a fight to the finish. Kevin McMurray emerged victorious, with Shaun Davis on his back bumper for second and Michael Shriner taking third place; it was his second time racing the truck.

Lastly, was the big show the race everyone came to see. The loud bone crushing excitement of the Stock Truck class. Even with two of the bigger contender stock trucks in hiding (Arlia and Green) the action was better than ever. In the end Brendan Beeler took the win in his second to last race in a stock truck. With the Munns brothers sweeping the rest of the podium with Will getting second and Jake getting third place.

Team Renezeder Continues Season with Confidence

LAKE FOREST, CA (April 7, 2011) – With a quiet confidence and decided determination, Carl Renezeder and his crew will head to Surprise, Arizona next weekend (April 15-17) for rounds three and four of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series.  Last year Renezeder found plenty of success on the desert short course at Speedworld Motorsports Park with three wins and seven total podiums in eight races.

“We’re just going to keep chipping away at this season one race at a time, taking nothing for granted,” commented Renezeder.  “More than ever, we’re appreciating each chance we get to make laps in these truck, giving us the opportunity to improve.”

Years ago, making these trucks faster usually required a few big changes, but as they’ve evolved, finding the on-track advantage has become about the small changes and constant innovation.

“Staying ahead of the learning and development curves with these trucks is crucial,” explained Renezeder.  “It’s pretty easy to find 95% of the speed out there; it’s the last 5% that requires the majority of our effort.”

So as the team, lead by crew chief Bill Smith of ProFab Motorsport, heads out to the Phoenix area next weekend, they will continue to find ways to get quicker each lap.  That and a little bit of luck is what it will take to find the next win.

The series opens the weekend with practice and qualifying on Friday, April 15, followed by an autograph session and event kick-off party at The Tilted Kilt in Peoria, featuring Renezeder and several other top drivers.  Renezeder will then celebrate his birthday on Saturday by throwing around some dirt and chasing a couple of trophies as the Series hosts round three of the championship starting at 2:00 p.m.  Sunday will consist of qualifying in the morning and then round four races starting at the same time as Saturday.

CORONA, Calif. (April 6, 2011) – No matter how dominant any particular driver or team was in the past, a new season always brings with it questions: Will the champ and other veterans still be dominant this year? Who has figured out something new that will come into play as the early part of the season unfolds?

But it also seems that the opening round often stirs up even more questions instead of giving solid answers. Because there is so much uncertainty, the racers and the teams can’t possibly know how good their setup is going to be relative to the rest of the field, so frequently it’s not until after round one that teams know where to set their sights, which means it’s usually the second race weekend where the questions begin to be solved.

As the 2011 opening races played out, many results were predicted by some of the pundits. For example, defending Pro 4 champ Rick Huseman didn’t have it easy, but he did methodically work his way to the front to take the win in both main events at Firebird Raceway. Prior to the event, we interviewed Huseman, and he said he hadn’t changed much because it was working, so why mess with success?

“I guess I’d have to say that my theory worked,” Huseman said. “We feel like we have a package that works. We only made some small changes, and I think our strategy worked. Our truck worked flawlessly all weekend, and it might have been one of the cleanest, best weekends ever in racing. We got the points for leading at the yellow flag and fastest qualifier. That’s huge. We ran the same body panels all weekend, and we still have the same ones on the truck for the next race. It was pretty amazing. I was fastest in qualifying, so my spotter told me, ‘Just let them figure it out, lay back, drive clean, because if you finish last, you’re going to be screwed.’ And as it turned out, with other guys dropping out and running into each other, I only had to pass a few guys.”

Because of his consistency out front, he holds a strong 10-point lead in the title chase after winning Rounds 1 and 2 over former champ and perennial contender Carl Renezeder. But you can also expect Renezeder and the rest of the field to have their sights firmly set on Huseman again as the season moves on to the second stop at Speedworld for Rounds 3 and 4.

And then there’s Pro 2, where the fastest weren’t necessarily the most successful. In one of the deepest fields in history, Brian Deegan took his truck to a fifth and a third place in the first two races, and those two results were enough for him to take control of the points.

“I think it’s going to be a good battle,” Deegan said. “I expected to leave the race in the top three. That was my goal. Now, I’m leading the points, and that has changed my goals. I realized that I’m going to do whatever it takes to battle for the championship, and that’s the plan. There are a handful of good drivers who can win the championship, and it showed after that first weekend. But has a rookie ever led the points?”

As you can imagine with 5-3 scores landing the points lead, there were a lot of other racers who had trouble during the two events, including day-one winner Bryce Menzies falling behind and then suffering engine trouble on day two, and as it sits, there is a three-way tie for second in the points standings only two points behind Deegan, and then another three-way tie for fifth in the standings directly behind that group, albeit a further 16 points back.

Perhaps among all of the classes, most of the answers will come in Pro 2 at Speedworld two weekends from now.

SpeedWorld Off-Road Park, just west of Phoenix in Surprise, Arizona will host the back-to-back set of championship short course races in a double-header weekend of events that run on both Saturday April 16 and Sunday April 17.

Combining all of the excitement of wild cross-country desert racing with the close-up viewing convenience of stadium seats, the hugely-popular Lucas Series will make its first appearance of the year on the specially designed and constructed 9/10ths-mile SpeedWorld off-road racing circuit.  Packing every bump, berm, jump, whoop, tabletop, mogul, and high-banked switchback turn that anyone could find in 20 miles of open desert racing, the Surprise short course is aptly-named because there‚s always a surprise waiting on every lap.

This is true family-friendly racing with an open-to-the-public/walk-through Pit Area, a Vendor‚s Row bristling with fun stuff, scale model car R/C off-road racing hosted by Team Associated, and long line of all those wonderfully savory track food favorite vendors that always make an outdoor event fun for everyone.

All 11 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series divisions beginning with the Junior 1, Junior 2, Modified Kart, UTV, Unlimited UTV, Limited Buggy, and Super Lite will race on both days at Surprise and will include the top pros in the Pro 4 Unlimited, Pro Buggy Unlimited, Pro Lite Unlimited, and Pro 2 Unlimited divisions who began a slam-bang 2011 season only a few weeks ago at Firebird Raceway in over in Chandler, Arizona:

Riverside‚s Rick Huseman went two for two at Firebird winning the first two Pro 4 Unlimited races of the season and putting himself into an early (and strong!) points lead coming into Surprise.

In the Pro Buggies Unlimiteds Doug Fortin from El Cajon and Mike Porter from Yorba Linda were the Saturday and Sunday winners.

Wild man Brian Deegan (Temecula) won the Saturday Pro Lite Unlimited show with Chris Brandt from Council Bluffs, Iowa grabbing the gold on Sunday.

And, in the Pro 2 Unlimited Bryce Menzies from Las Vegas got the Saturday laurels, with Flagstaff‚s favorite son Rob Naughton taking the checkered flag first on Sunday.

Riverside, California (March 15, 2011) – Anchored by seven time supercross champion Jeremy McGrath, the Stronghold Motorsports team begins its championship quest as the 2011 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series kicks off this weekend March 19th and 20th at Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Arizona.

McGrath will be making his debut in the new Monster Energy/ReadyLift Stronghold Motorsports Pro 2 Unlimited truck. Challenging the best competition in off road racing, he will also be lined up alongside teammate and 2010 Pro 2 Rookie of the Year, Rob Naughton who returns to compete in the Stronghold Motorsports ReadyLift/Lucas Oil machine.

The off season additions to the Stronghold lineup also include 2011 ProBuggy champion and Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series television personality, Cameron Steele. Steele, a seasoned veteran in a variety of off road classes, will be making his first appearance in his Monster Energy/ReadyLift Stronghold truck this weekend as he makes the transition from open wheel buggy into the wildly competitive ProLite truck field. As Steele moves on to a new challenge, the experienced gained during his championship run will be invaluable to the team’s efforts as Brandon Bailey will now be competing full time in the Stronghold Motorsports/Yokohama tires ProBuggy .
