The Monster Energy Landshark Trick Truck  is Back; Herbst Takes First in Class! 

The Monster Energy Off Road Team kicked off the 2012 Best in the Desert series with an impressive showing at the Parker 425 in Arizona this past weekend.  On the banks of the Colorado River lies a racecourse known for its sandy whoops, rocky washes, high-speed graded roads, and signature “Parker Python” which is always a crowd pleaser.  In past years, rain has been a present on race day, helping the racers stay clear of the dust.  This year, race conditions were ideal and it was the wind that helped clear the dust and silt from the record 227 entries in the field.

Thursday marked the beginning of the event, where trucks lined up for a practice lap then headed right back out for a qualifying lap that would decide their start position for Saturday’s race.  This 5-mile loop started and ended at each end of the Parker Python.  Along Shea Road, which parallels a stretch of the racecourse, spectators got to witness high-speed whoops and sandy turns.  BJ Baldwin knows the importance of starting upfront on race day and was a man on mission, claiming a 2^nd place spot four seconds off the lead qualifier, Rob MacCachren.  Tim Herbst, driving the #19 Trophy Truck, took 8^th and brother Troy Herbst in the #49 “LandShark” took 18^th.  Monster Energy’s Class 1 presence, Mikey Childress, started 12^th on race day.

Another trademark of the Parker 425 race is the start begins right in the streets of Parker, just like in Baja.  Racers headed off the line directly into the beautiful Arizona sunrise. With only Rob MacCachren ahead of him, BJ kept up and setting a good pace for the rest of the pack.  Midway through the first lap however, something in the engine wiring harness malfunctioned, causing the engine to cut out intermittently.  BJ pulled off to the side, causing him to fall 12 minutes behind MacCachren and falling several spots in the process.  Electrical issues would continue to haunt BJ all day, but didn’t stop him from placing in the top 10.  “As many demons as this truck had today with electrical issues, alternator failing, batteries failing, I think finishing third across the line is impressive, considering having had an hour of down time,” said Baldwin at the finish line.  The official results bumped him down to 5^th on time in Trophy Truck and 8^th overall.

With BJ in and out of trouble, teammate Ryan Arciero and Troy Herbst in the #49 Trophy Truck picked up the slack for the Monster Energy Off Road Team.  Ryan started out the race with an aggressive strategy – Get through the pack. “We did everything we could in that first lap to pick off as many guys as we could and get Troy the truck in a position that he could take it to the finish,” said Arciero.  And they did just that.  After the team switched drivers, Troy Herbst would take the checkered flag and finish 1^st in class and 2^nd overall.  “The team has been doing a lot of homework and it’s been a long time since a Herbst as been in the winners circle and this is long overdue.  There’s going to be more to come I can tell you that right now.”

Tim Herbst in the #19 was also barreling through the desert at a podium pace.  After starting 8^th, he made his way all the way to a couple hundred yards behind BJ and Rob Mac.  With them in sight, Tim pushed harder to catch them and in doing so, blew his engine and ending their day.  Jerry Welchell, in the #75 Monster Energy Camburg Trick Truck, had a similar story as his engine let go in the second lap.  The overall attrition of vehicles was staggering.

Class 1 driver, Mikey Childress, had a great race day leading to the final lap, where he ran in to one issue that possibly cost in an overall win.  “Flawless throughout the entire race, my vehicle ran the best it has ever,” Childress explained at the finish line.  At mile marker 50 of his final lap, he was 57 seconds off the overall pace.  After hearing some vibration on the fast roads, he decided to pull off and assess the situation.  Turns out he had only been running on one loose lugnut and two broken studs.  After robbing some studs from the other wheels and changing out the wheel, Childress nursed it in to the finish to claim 6^th overall and 3^rd in class.

The Monster Energy Off Road Team opened the BITD season with a bang, putting 3 racers in the overall top 10 out of a field of 227.  You won’t want to miss the next race in the BITD series, the legendary Mint 400 in Las Vegas, NV over March 23^rd-26^th – BJ will be eager to defend his title.

The opening race of the 2012 SCORE International series kicked off in Laughlin, NV next to the raging Colorado River.  The Laughlin Desert Challenge was broken in to two races, giving racers the opportunity to score points both days.  The course consisted of a 6.25 mile loop, featuring high speed jumps, sandy banked turns, rocky washes, and massive ruts known for crippling even the most capable of off road vehicles.  This spectator friendly course featured 8 laps of hardcore off-road action with tons of bumping and passing.

Not only did the Friday qualifying lap earn racers spots for the first race on Saturday, but it ended BJ Baldwin tire hysteria as well. Finally, BJ ran his much-anticipated new Toyo tires in competition; and he did it well.  With this quick and testing course in front of him, it was a perfect preview at what to expect from BJ in the longer races of 2012.

One lap was run on Friday to choose the started order for Round 1.  SCORE sent racers off every 4 minutes so each racer had a clear path ahead of them.  Top qualifier was none other than Baldwin, with an impressive time of 6 minutes and 23.99 seconds.  Recent Off Road Hall of Fame inductee, Rob MacCachren, qualified second, a mere 10 seconds behind BJ. Needless to say, that’s a hell of a way to open 2012.  Greg Nunley, Loyd Sproule, and Monster Energy’s Cameron Steele rounded out the top five.

Race day brought a calm and collected BJ, something not seen in 2011.  “This year I am committed to wining races. I am not going to let anything get in the way of victory,” said Baldwin, “I want to focus on smarter driving and finishing races, keeping my eyes on the another championship.”   The race, however, was a little different than the previous days qualifying, as BJ had to constantly fight off off-road race legend Rob Mac for the lead.  “Our plan was to take it easy on the first few laps, but right after the start the pace was quick and we were being pressured by MacCachren. He started catching us on the second lap so we had to turn it up. Losing to a legend like Rob doesn’t bother me, he is an amazing driver, but beating him is awesome!” commented Baldwin.

BJ further separated from Rob when Rob had to pull over and change a flat on the sixth lap.  From there, it was smooth sailing to the finish.   Juan Carlos Lopez, from Tecate, Mexico, crossed the finish line over a minute after BJ, claiming second place in the Trophy Truck class.  Cameron Steele entered three Dessert Assassins trucks to the race, including two Trophy Trucks.  Josh Daniel, in the #14 Truck, did not finish the race and after a promising start in the early laps of the race, Steele’s #16 truck transmission blew, sending shrapnel towards the passenger seat.   Co-driver Cody Stuart suffered a severe leg injury and was taken to Las Vegas for a nightlong surgery.  Cody will have a long recovery and we wish him the best.  Cameron attended Stuarts trip to Las Vegas and was with him throughout the night.  With him in mind, he booked it back to Laughlin in time for Sundays race.

Starting from the back, Cameron was able to battle through the field of 22 to finish his #16 truck 7th.  Truck #14 finished 5th, with Josh Daniel behind the wheel.  BJ ran in to mechanical issues that forced him to limp through the course by lap 3.  On board computer issues shut down 3 cylinders when he was 14 seconds ahead of Rob Mac.  BJ made it through the 4th lap but after hearing about medical issues concerning teammate and father, Bobby Baldwin, he cut straight to him.  Bobby suffered a heavy concussion and blurred vision in his left eye after a cruel landing off a jump.  Race officials called for SCORE rescue over the radio and took the two to medical facilities.  We are happy to report after a night in the hospital and several tests, Bobby has been released yesterday morning.  Both co-drivers took over the vehicles and neither would finish.

This weekend we saw two race extremes of the new era of BJ Baldwin.  Will the new tires make a significant difference, as seen on Saturday?  Will mechanical issues continue to haunt him like on Sunday?  Your guess is as good as ours.  I guess we’ll see at the BITD Parker 425 in early February.

Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel is a wanted man. Race fans and friends of the dirtbike community are outraged as they call foul on the French organizers of the DAKAR rally for turning a blind-eye to Peterhansels blatant disregard for his fellow competitor’s safety. 

Two days ago, Stephane Peterhansel was driving for the race of his life, trying to fend off an attack by Robby Gordon and co-pilot Johhny Campbell as the orange HUMMER “rallied” to a stage 9 victory. Did Peterhansel put Italian biker Filippo Ciotto’s safety (and/or life) in jeopardy when he crossed the river that day? Did French organizers do the right thing?

We present to the court of public opinion the following exhibits:

What you see is a collision between car and rider. Filippo Ciotto gets struck and his bike gets submerged in the river. Ciotto cringes in pain from the negligence of little pussy Peterhansel, who he himself is a former motorcycle champion, does not stop neither to check on the victim nor to help him with his bike.

Clearly, Peterhansel made a bad call and was hasty in crossing the river.

The DAKAR organizers (That’s what they call themselves at ASO) have said nothing about the matter, nor disciplined the Frenchman for his mishap. Famed Eurosport announcer Carlton Kirby made the call on the same day broadcast pointing out Peterhansel’s crime and stating, “That is a penalty to me”.

No such penalty has been leveled but moto enthusiasts throughout the blogsphere have been going bananas over the incident and outraged that the “organizers” have done nothing about it. Some theorists have pitched the idea that, because Peterhansel is a Frenchman and the “organizers” are also strickened with the same curse, that they are somehow colluding to protect their own. While this cannot be proven, it is not that far fetched a concept.

Rather than making this a game of “smear the queer” on the French, let’s just call it what it is: A total disregard for the safety of a fellow competitor on Peterhansel’s part and the organizers have turned a blind eye to their fellow countryman’s mis-stepping. American’s fans are outraged and want Peterhansel head on a skewer.

There is a code among former motorbike racers who later race in 4 wheel vehicles: you don’t mess with the bikes. It’s bad karma and not kosher. While RDC has no confirmation of this, it has been rumored that this is what drove Andy Grider to withdrawal from the rally last week: that his driver was purposefully scaring the hell out of bikers on the course. We shall see if that is the case.

BIG DAY FOR TEAM SPEED HUMMER AS JOHNNY CAMPBELL EARNS HIS FIRST DAKAR STAGE WIN

GORDON AND CAMPBELL LED THE ENTIRE DAY BUT NEVER PULLED ANY TIME UNTIL THE LAST 80K

It’s Johnny Campbell’s day in Iquique, CHILE- Robby Gordon’s solid driving and the performance of the SPEED HUMMER were enough to give co-driver and 11-time BAJA 1000 champion Johnny Campbell his first ever DAKAR Rally Stage win at the shores of Iquique, CHILE this afternoon. Campbell, who is a rookie rally co-pilot, was a last minute pick by Gordon to be his navigator in the 2012 DAKAR Rally. The duo seem to be making up a good pair; the results have been very consistent thus far which is showing fans that Campbell is making use of all of his talents as a desert racer, including heaps of intuitive perception.

CAMPBELL: “Today went good. Careful in the rocks for no flats, went fast in rough, Hummers advantage. Navigation went good and the decent to Iquique was the scariest thing I’ve ever done – RG was matted at 205kph! OMG I was freaking out!!!”

Gordon’s choice came as quite a surprise to off-road fans and journalists alike since Campbell has not been strapped inside a cage in the competitive area until now.  We can only image the immeasurable amount of pressure on Campbell to perform well and do his job. In the US, co-drivers means a totally different thing than it does at  the DAKAR. There is virtually little comparison between the two and Campbell has spent the past 10 days learning to navigate Gordon’s HUMMER through the harsh terrain of the DAKAR. With the car seeming to be reliable to this point and Gordon’s driving skills are well harnessed, most of the pressure is lying on Johnny’s shoulders and he is no stranger to running up in front for long distances.

GORDON:

“It was a very good special for us again. Now it’s just a waiting game to see how soon Peterhansel comes behind me. On the transfer stage, I think we had him beat by about a minute and a half. But we need more than a minute and a half, so I pushed very hard on the last section, as hard as I could go the whole time and it will be interesting to see how much time we put on him because we pushed, like qualifying hard, not really knowing where you’re going. We had a couple of big scary moments. For us, we’ve got to make time. We’re in a different position to him. He has to conserve his time and I’ve got to make it. We’ve got four days left, four real days of racing left and the Hummer’s strong. 19 seconds? He made a lot of time up on me, then. I can’t believe he could catch us there, because we were going crazy. So he’s a madman; if he beats us, he’s a madman. Madder than me!”

This is seen as generally bad for most on many levels. Nasser’s appeal among the fans is unheralded and his draw as the defending champion means more eyeballs on DAKAR. He is beloved throughout the DAKAR countries for making nice with all the fans so his departure will felt throughout the DAKAR. Questions remain whether he would drive a HUMMER again, but judging from his better stages it’d be hard to imagine him trading the 2WD beast in for a sports coupe. Nasser we love you and hate to see you go.

RIVERGATE:

Peterhansel is getting tarred and feathered by American bloggers for nerfing this stranded bike racer. Hey Peter: WTF?

There was outrage in the cyber sphere the moment images and videos hit youtube showing the Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel’s MINI striking a stranded motorbike racer while they both crossed a small river. The images clearly show Perthansel hitting the poor chap and knocking down and into the river. The public forum and the motor dirt bike racing community instantly called for a penalty on Peterhansel, but none was given as of press time.

PETERHANSEL HAS HIS HANDS FULL AND HOPING ROBBY BREAKS DOWN

Before the New York Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal jump on the DAKAR bandwagon, all of you off-road fans should credit yourselves with carrying the team so far. The DAKAR is grossly under-recognized and totally un-represented by the lame-stream US media. SO folks like RDC are the hard-core media who bring you these updates, reports and recaps better than any other US outlet. Trust us that the big media kooks will be salivating over Robby Gordon and Johnny Campbell in their weekend reports coming up if , indeed, the duo can keep it up.

The HUMMERS of Robby Gordon and Nasser Al-Attiyah were the pride and joy of rest day in COPIAPO’ yesterday and had the honors of starting stage 8 in front of the rest of the field. Nasser, who won stage 7 nicely, left the start at 10:26 local time and Gordon/Campbell only 3 minutes later.

STAGE 8 SUMMARY

GORDON WAS FIRST TO CROSS THE FINISH AND NASSER SECOND; GORDON MISSED A TIME ADJUSTED STAGE WIN BY ONLY 5 SECONDS

But early on, Nasser and Lucas lost a belt and hed to stop and change. Then, they lost the alternator and had to stop for second time, costing him close to 19 minutes. But in typical Nasser “Yalla Yalla” style, he said, “Let’s Go!, Full Attack” and started snipping off time at every checkpoint. He trimmed his 18:36 minute deficit down to 16 and then again down to 14, then 13. At the finish he more than halved his original deficit down to 08:09 minutes to finish 5^th, where he stands on the general rankings, 45 minutes off the lead. Nasser’s effort is not over by any means but his team mates Robby and Johnny are very much in the hunt for the unprecedented first DAKAR OA by any American.

NASSER AL-ATTIYAH: “We had a problem with an engine belt. We repaired it… and shortly after it was the alternator’s turn to need a repair. But then we started attacking in earnest. There were six cars in front of us and we overtook all the Minis, as well as De Villiers’ Toyota. We did a good job. They are nervous because I overtook all of them, but that is not my problem. I know everything is going smoothly, and we will see how far we can go.”

Robby and Johnny had to pass a stranded Al-Attiyah as Robby had laid it down that the orange HUMMER could not stop again to aid the Qatari’s HUMMER. While Robby and Johnny did get off to a great start they started losing time to the MINI’S, but then RG put his foot down and started rallying toward Antofagosta and made up several minutes of deficit to finish the stage only 00:05 behind Nani Roma.

ROBBY GORDON:

“Nani may have beat me, but it must have been close. Beating Peterhansel by seven minutes makes this a great day. In all honesty, I did not attack too much, except towards the end of the stage. At any rate, I was not at my best in the first 300 kilometres, only in the last 150. I felt the others breathing down my neck, so I accelerated.”

We can start to imagine the pressure on rookie co-pilot Johnny “11-Time” Campbell as he sits in the cockpit of RG’s HUMMER calling off navigation signals as well as doing tire changes and generally helping RG with race strategy. Campbell has been making some calls that Gordon concurred with which paid off. There are 6 stages remaining on the DAKAR and Team SPEED is very much in contention to claim America’s first title in the world’s most important motorsports event. America is on the edge of our seats watching and cheering for Gordon and Campbell to stay up front, consistent and fast.

Frenchman Cyril Despres got stuck in a brutal mud hole, went over the bars and probably will had some soreness on Stage 9

In the bikes category, the Mark (Coma) and Cyril (Despres) show continued today with Coma jumping out in front and missing a wicked mud hole that swallowed the Frenchman Despres whole. Despres had a comfortable lead over Coma in the general standings at the start of the stage but gave it all away after his mishap. After Cyril was completely stopped and stuck, the Portuguese Goncalves, stopped to aid Despres and got stuck himself. After Cyril was freed, he took off thinking Goncalves was all set. There is a code on the DAKAR stage and we think and Goncalves followed it right.

Antofagasta, Chile (Jan. 9, 2012) – The 2012 Dakar Rally’s stage eight featured one of the longest special stages of the entire 14-day contest, technical during the early going – which bode well for the Monster Energy X-raid MINI ALL4 vehicles – then opening up to highway-like conditions that favored the larger and flat out faster Hummer.

In the end the Monster Energy MINIs won out with Nani Roma claiming the top spot in stage eight, with Krzysztof Holowczyc also making the podium in 3^rd. Just a click off the podium pace was Stephane Peterhansel, who held onto his overall class lead ahead of Robby Gordon with a solid 4^th place finish.

In the bike class at Dakar Monster Energy’s Joan Barreda placed 4^th – the top Husqvarna Speedbrain placer, though teammate Paulo Goncalves – currently 5^th overall – was the most talked-about racer of the stage. Check out what happened on Saturday in stage seven when the Monster Energy-backed Goncalves stopped to help out a fallen Red Bull racer – and the rascal took off without returning the favor to Goncalves!

Highlights & Quotes

• A lot of discussion at Dakar regarding the relationship between American off-road specifications vs. European FIA specifications – namely the Hummer vs. the MINIs. The Hummer is basically the only American vehicle that has a chance to win Dakar, and has been given numerous breaks for suspension travel and air intake. This allows the Hummer to be competitive, but in certain situations puts the MINIs at a decided disadvantage.
• Great quote from Peterhansel: “Winning the Dakar still represents my No. 1 goal. But defending my small lead will be anything but easy.”
• Fortunately for Goncalves the Red Bull racer who took off on him, Cyril Despres, will forever be known for his selfish stunt. In addition, the hero Goncalves was awarded all of the time back that he lost helping free Despres from the mud.
• Things didn’t go quite as well for Monster Energy Husqvarna’s Ze Helio who also got stuck in the treacherous mud hole and ended up losing an hour. Barreda avoided the mud hole altogether, but lost time riding in the dust of Stefan Svitko and Juan Pedrero.

Upcoming: The ninth stage is considered by many to be the marquee stage of the 2012 Dakar Rally. Running from Antofagasta to Iquique, the drivers and riders basically fall off the side of the world – down a massive dune to the Pacific Ocean. Opening in the Canyons, fast tracks and Fech-Fech sand (a very fine powder caused by the erosion of clay- limestone terrain) await and provide an extreme test for the navigation skills of the individual riders as well as the teams.

Monster Energy brought talent from around the globe to Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix for the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOOORRS) season finale.  Veteran short course racer Johnny Greaves made the long drive from Wisconsin while X Games gold medalist and rallycross star Liam Doran flew in from England and jumped right in to the fastest class in the series; the 4WD, 800 horsepower Pro4 Unlimited category.  Greaves and Doran joined the usual cast of Monster Energy LOORRS stars that includes Jeremy McGrath, Casey Currie, and Cameron Steele.

Saturday was the last race of the season and championships were on the line in all classes.  In the Pro Lite Unlimited class, Casey Currie and Cameron Steele took different paths in their quest for victory, with Currie’s truck powered by a factory sealed V8 engine and Steele’s sporting a high performance four cylinder.  Unfortunately the results were the same for the duo, as mechanical issues limited Steele to a seventh place finish and varying track conditions forced Currie, who was in second place for much of the race, back to fourth by the end.  When the dust settled Steele had finished third for the season and Currie finished fifth in points.

McGrath was coming off a win from the last LOORRS stop in Las Vegas and looking to repeat, but after running under the caution flag half way through the race he was shoved into Carl Renezeder on the first corner of the restart and forced to limp around the track for the remainder.  His injured Monster Energy 2WD truck could not make full use of the 800 horsepower and 35-inch tires and crossed the line in seventh place, putting him in fourth place for the season.  Neither Doran nor Greaves were running for season points in Pro4, so they had nothing to lose by going all out.  Greaves got mixed up in traffic early on and came away with damaged steering, but newcomer Liam Doran banged with Todd LeDuc lap after lap, hanging with the short course veteran right to the checkers to finish in fifth place.  “Short course has huge jumps, trucks sliding sideways, and lots of passing,” Doran commented.    “This is what every kid wants to watch.”

On Sunday the Lord (or at least LOORRS) made cup races, where buggies and trucks, 2WD and 4WD, ran on the track at the same time for five figure paychecks.  Cameron Steele chose to park his Pro Lite Unlimited truck for teammate Brandon Bailey’s Super Buggy, while Currie made suspension adjustments to best the competition.  Steele’s gamble did not pay off, but Currie finished third in a field of 27 drivers despite having zero visibility on the last lap after his hood folded back over the windshield.

The final race of the year pitted the Pro2 Unlimited trucks against the Pro4 Unlimiteds in the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup, with the faster 4WD trucks forced to start half a lap back.  Liam Doran  started dead last amongst the 25 truck field but weaved his way past half the competitors before his transmission called it quits.  Carnage came quickly and hardly a lap went by without a caution or black flag coming out.  Jeremy McGrath was in second place with two turns to go on the final lap when his Monster Energy truck was clipped from behind by Carl Renezeder and passed by two competitors in a controversial finish.  McGrath had some words with Carl and the officials had Jeremy’s back, DQ’ing Renezeder and awarding McGrath third place for a $7500 paycheck.  “The toughest part is having someone else dictate your race,” McGath commented.  “Third isn’t bad but next time things will go differently.”

With an entire year of racing in the Best In The Desert series behind him, Monster Energy’s “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin went into the final race of the season only 1 point behind the leader. The Henderson 250 was an all or nothing battle to secure the points championship. In the end however, it wasn’t the fastest that won, but the most driven.  BJ ran in to some tough mechanical issues he had overcome to finish 5th in class and 10th overall and secured just enough points to take the overall Best in the Desert Points Championship for the second consecutive year. Congratulations, BJ!!

As far as the 2011 Best In The Desert Off-Road Championships was concerned, ALL the chips on the table were up for grabs on Saturday at the season-ending Henderson 250. With Monster Energy’s “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin a tantalizing single point away from the ‘11 Championship (as well as backing up his 2010 BITD Championship), it was “All IN!” for the Las Vegas-based outfit. And despite a number of “busts” and setbacks – all looked lost on a number of occasions throughout the mechanically calamitous event – Ballistic BJ and crew never gave up, twirling spanners, changing out parts, rolling around in dust and oil and working in an orchestrated frenzy to keep the Championship cause alive. Thus, when the burly, angry white, sinister black and green electric glow Trophy Truck met the finished line, it was determined that Baldwin had, in fact, prevailed, winning his second BITD title in two years.

“We had a tough day today,” said Baldwin with a smiling, dusty face. “We lost a drive line and had some other issues. All together we had about an hour of down time. But we won the Championship not because we were the fastest today or because we were the most strategic. We won because in the last 2 miles we refused to give up. Even though I knew we had to finish 2 minutes ahead of antagonist Stroble I wanted to pass him before he crossed the finish line. I knew we had lost the Championship but I thought it might make me feel better if we passed him in the last hundred yards. We almost passed him but we didn’t. However we put so much pressure on him that he blew a checkpoint and got a penalty. Just goes to show no matter what hand you are dealt you should never give up!!”

“Impose your will”,” declared champion Baldwin. “Words to live by. If you refuse to lose you will always win.”

Congratulations and a big Shout-Out to B.J. and crew!

There were more than just bragging rights on the line coming into the TransWest Ford Henderson 250.  This was the final Best In The Desert (BITD) race of the season, and with double points for the race it would be the deciding factor for the season championship.  As the defending champion, Monster Energy Off-Road Team’s “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin had a bull’s eye on his back all season.  While he has been blistering fast and dominated at the General Tire Mint 400, he has not won a BITD or SCORE race this season.  It was quite a change from when BJ won the SCORE season championship in 2006 and made it look easy in the process.

This season was a test of BJ’s character, and he rose to the challenge.  After qualifying fourth overall and second in Trick Truck (Class 1400) for Henderson, BJ left the line in his Monster Energy / General Tires truck like it was shot out of a cannon.  The points race was a close one, and BJ wanted to open up the gap on the competition.  Unfortunately a rogue rock on the course opened up Baldwin’s driveline instead, and he had to limp to the next pit in order to change the driveline.  Forty minutes were lost before BJ was back on course and the opportunity for victory looked slim.

Still, Baldwin never gave up.  His sixth place finish in the 1400 Class was enough to ensure that “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin’s Monster Energy / General Tires truck will wear the No. 1 plate next season.  It was the most closely contested Trick Truck championship in recent memory, with mere points separating Baldwin from the two nearest competitors when the dust settled.  “There was some controversy about the times, and sometimes decisions go your way and sometimes they don’t.” BJ shared on Saturday night.  “I know what it is like to be on the losing end of a decision and it sucks.  I don’t want to take anything away from Steve Strobel, he had a great season.”

Baldwin’s Monster Energy Off-Road Teammates Jerry Zaiden and Jerry Whelchel also had reason to celebrate.  Their weekend in Henderson was off to a rough start when Whelchel rolled the No. 75 Camburg Racing-built truck in qualifying.  Fortunately neither the truck nor the driver were injured, although the Monster Energy / General Tires truck was forced to start way back at 36^th in class, ruling out any opportunities for clean air.  Like Baldwin, “quit” is not in the vocabulary for Jerry and Jerry.  They pushed past the competition to finish eighth overall and third in Trick Truck, taking home the first podium finish for the Camburg Racing Trick Truck.  “When we finished fourth at Vegas to Reno it proved that we have what it takes to be competitive,” Zaiden commented after the race.  “Our Monster Energy / General Tires team did an outstanding job and showed what we are capable of when the chips are down.”

The final event of the Best in the Desert Off-Road series isn’t just another race, it’s become the tipping point for 2011′s overall point championship. With Monster Energy’s “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin a mere 1 point away from domination of this year’s Season Championship, he has nothing to lose this weekend! Can he take home the back-to-back BITD Overall Points Championship?

Each year, just after the WRC and MotoGP calendars finally wind down, an all star cast of racing greats get together in Italy for the Monza Rally Show. Supported by totally legit WRC and S2000 whips, plus tens and tens of thousands of ecstatic fans, the drivers race stage and head-to-head formats inside the walls of one of the coolest tracks on the planet.

Make no mistake, the event might not be on an official calendar but the talent on show is off the charts. Valentino Rossihas been supporting the event for years and this year, Seb Loeb (WRC World Champion) was in town to keep the timekeeping honest.

Valentino may be the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) when it comes to MotoGP but it turns out he’s a savagely fast driver as well. Fair play, he’s done a couple of WRC Rallies as a wildcard but he’s not exactly got a load of time on his hands to practice on 4 wheels.

The 3 day event started super well for the #46 car and Friday night he was right at the sharp end thanks to a close second to Loeb. Better came on Saturday when he took 2 stage wins and meant he and Seb Loeb had separated themselves from the rest of the pack and left him needing to bring it home on Sunday to stand on the second step. Claiming the podium and finishing only 22 seconds adrift of a multiple World Rally Champion was an immense job and to think he had Dani Sordo behind him in 4^th means he dispatched a WRC ace along the way.

The finale of the show was the head-to-head race (run in the memory of Marco Simoncelli) that took place on the start/finish straight in front of overflowing grandstands. As a knockout format there was zero margin for error and just as he had in the stage formats, Valentino produced a ton of convincing wins which took him to a semi-final with Dani Sordo. As convincing as he had been all weekend, Valentino produced the goods again and it was a final showdown with Seb Loeb as a prize.

The final brought Valentino’s only lapse in judgement all weekend when he clipped a tyre wall when throwing the car into one of the tightest sections on the course. It left Loeb with the title but no doubt about who the two standout drivers were of the whole event. Standing proud on the podium for the second time Valentino was quick to stress how much fun he’d managed to have whilst putting in a performance which could only be described as a masterclass in driving.

Props go out to the GOAT and to the thousands who camped out to support the team outside the garage and in the stands. It was a huge atmosphere and proof if you need it of how cool motorsport can be when everyone’s there to mix racing with a massive amount of fun.

Word out of Ensenada, Mexico, yesterday was that the 44^th running of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1,000 was – flat out – the most grueling Baja event in recent years, quite possibly the past decade.

And handling all that the legendary Baja 1,000 could hand out was Monster Energy/BF Goodrich/Terrible Herbst Motorsports team’s Troy Herbst and Ryan Arciero, grinding hard down – and back up – the Baja Peninsula to place a respectable 8^th in the 33-entry SCORE Baja 1,000 Trophy Truck field.

“That was certainly a tough 1,000,” said Herbst following the race. “We did everything we possibly could in preparing for this great race. Had a couple unfortunate things happen – which can be expected at Baja – and that’s pretty much was the difference between 8^th place and a possible podium finish for the Monster Energy/BF Goodrich/Terrible Herbst Motorsports team.

“All-in-all it was a great weekend of racing at Baja and I’m extremely proud of our team’s effort.”

In addition to Herbst’s effort, Monster Energy-backed Cameron Steele would place 11^th – just missing a top ten finish in his Yokohama/Desert Assassins Trophy Truck.

A bit of an auspicious start for the 2011 Tecate SCORE Baja 1,000 as, during the Trophy Truck class’ timed launch, a local’s semi-tractor and trailer jackknifed on the course about four miles out from the start. All sorts of chaos ensued as the rest of the class race starts were delayed by nearly two hours.

So with the course completely blocked, race organizer Sal Fish – in some quick thinking – hopped in his SCORE vehicle and led the remaining Trophy Trucks out to the site of the accident, then had everyone restart from there. Problem solved!

Herbst and the Monster Energy/BF Goodrich/Terrible Herbst Motorsports team was running well up until about 100 miles were remaining in the some 600-mile contest when they suffered, according to radio reports, a tire puncture. The ensuing pit stop for fuel would also include replacing the tire, but valuable time was lost earlier on account of Herbst racing a portion of Baja on only three good tires. All fixed, the No. 49 truck blasted back out into the dark and dusty Mexican desert night and back through to the finish north towards Ensenada.

For Steele it was “just the little problems,” he pointed out at the finish line that held him back from a better finish at Baja. “It’s gratifying to know you got here to the finish – but heartbreaking to know you weren’t the guy that got here first,” he said.

For the seventh-straight year cameras from NBC’s “World of Adventure” were on hand to cover the action of the 44^th running of the Baja 1,000, with broadcasts coming at a later date on NBC Sports Cable (formerly Versus) and ESPN International.
