Class 8 is not dead - Steve Olliges Class 8 build

Steve recently turned to Mark Newhan to build a new Class 8 truck based on a 1979 Ford F150. This is the first in a multiple part series showing the build, completed vehicle, driver profile and first test of the truck.

In response to perceived changes in the national policy of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a task force of Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) leadership lead by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) headed to Washington DC on March 30^th, 2011 to meet with the National Director of the BLM, Bob Abbey. The task force was comprised of AMA District 37 President Jerry Grabow, AMA Senior Vice President, Government Relations Ed Moreland, Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) President Fred Wiley, and Jeff Knoll, representing the California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs (CA4WDC).  Although National Director Abbey was summoned to the White house, the meeting allowed OHV leadership the opportunity to express the growing concern enthusiasts have regarding  policy, safety, management, staffing, and Cost Recovery for Special Recreational Permits (SRPs) on BLM managed lands.

The primary focus of the meeting was to share best practices to the BLM regarding SRP management, and ask for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the various proactive event organizers that would ensure a continued reciprocating relationship that has fostered responsible use of public lands for over 40 years. Because of the long standing event history the group has to draw experience from; it was able to offer a different view of events from car, truck, and motorcycle racing, to slow speed motorcycle touring, family recreational 4-wheeling, rock crawling, and Utility terrain vehicles ( UTV) events. Spectator safety has remained the highest priority for the BLM regarding SRPs and the group offered additional suggestions based on experience to BLM leadership in an effort to create a national policy regarding enforcement of spectator boundaries.

The BLM has expressed a desire to continue this process and hopes to achieve additional strategies to better serve the public through its Desert Advisory Committee (DAC) in the California Desert District (CDD). A subcommittee to the DAC made up of OHV stakeholders is currently being formed on a fast track and will report to the DAC regarding best practices to help CDD management create the best possible management of SRP’s in the CDD.

The task force was created shortly after the California 200 tragedy, and is made up of event organizers in the CDD, and beyond. Thru unification of all the various OHV interests the group was able to offer solutions that find the balance between the unique needs of all activities in the CDD.

“That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” As I sat there listening to the famous speech by Abraham Lincoln, staring out the window that was etched with those very words on a cold, rainy day in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the gravity of our trip, and the important task that had been laid out before us started to sink in.

When I was asked to join a group of promoters, event organizers and concerned recreationalists for a regularly scheduled “meeting of the minds”, I had no idea that it would lead me across this great nation, into the office of the National Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Washington, DC. Following the California 200 and leading up to the 5^th running of the Griffin King of the Hammers my concern for Hammerking’s ability to obtain a permit was of the foremost concern. In preparation, I had attempted to educate myself on all the Special Recreation Permit (SRP) stipulations and possible changes. In doing so, I found myself immersed in what seemed like a flowing tide of changes in policy for the California Desert District (CDD).

American Motorcyclist Association District 37 President Jerry Grabow and Off-Road Business Association President Fred Wiley extended an invitation to join them on a trip to Washington, DC. I was shocked that I would be chosen, and wondered if there might be someone better suited to lead the charge for the 4 wheel vehicles interests.  What I learned on the way, with the support of the California Association of 4 Wheel drive Clubs, was that, as citizens, it is our duty to participate in the government rather than sit idle and wait for others to create policy for us.  Because the diverse group of Off Highway vehicle (OHV) users was able to work together for the greater good of all parties, we found ourselves able to break down the walls between the leaders of the BLM. In addition, we were able to explain our concern for the continued reciprocating relationship OHV leadership and local BLM offices have forged for over 40 years. Our group was able to drive home the importance of organized recreation to the public, and show that OHV recreation is the first opportunity many have to learn about responsible use of our public lands, and create lifelong stewards of them in the process. While we all understand that the opinion of the safety of OHV events has become suspect in the eyes of the uneducated, I firmly believe that this trip has shown BLM at the highest levels that the OHV community believes that by working together we can create a model for efficient safety at OHV events across the country, and standardize the requirements in a manner that will encourage participation in the process rather than outcast the very fabric of our community.

While I don’t believe that every issue facing SRPs is magically been resolved because of one meeting in DC, I do feel strongly that in time by working with the field offices in the CDD we will find solutions that will make our events safer and managed in a manner that the chain of events that lead to the California 200 tragedy will not easily be repeated. The public’s involvement in the Desert Advisory Committee (DAC) meetings which lead to the formation of a sub-committee of event organizers was a big win for OHV special events. Only four months earlier the feeling in the OHV community was seemingly bleak. Using proactive unified pressure and offering potential solutions, OHV will be a part of this policy, and not simply left to decide if it wishes to continue hosting events inside the subjective guidelines of the SRP handbook.

What should not be lost in all of this is how effective OHV groups can be when they lay aside their indifference toward another type of activity and work together toward a common goal.  Our meeting in Washington DC was a success due in large part because of the respect we had shown to all forms of OHV recreation. While the AMA was able to utilize its political presence in Washington DC, the largest voice came from the average citizen and not the AMA lobbyist. Our industry leaders in Washington DC added the needed balance to help drive the point across, but the passion of the enthusiast was the strongest message that could be sent. Because all forms of this industry worked together we have won a battle. The irony of my trip to Gettysburg the day after our meeting in Washington, DC was not lost as I pondered the turning tide of the Army of the Potomac, and how the political opinions of the war shifted as Meade struck a crushing blow to General Lee’s advancement. Lee’s words following his Gettysburg defeat offer a somber reminder of what lay ahead in the battle for the Johnson Valley OHV area, “We must now prepare for harder blows and harder work.” (Robert E. Lee, July 26, 1863). I cannot imagine that our United States Marine Corps would be a bit offended at the thought of a worthy opponent comprised of many like minded individuals, from many states, and many cultures exercising their rights in solidarity much like those who stood on that hill on July 3^rd,1863 and held the line because it was the right thing to do.

With a little more than a month before the 2011 short course season kicks-off at Firebird International Raceway, defending Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS) Pro 4 Unlimited champion Rick Huseman added a final exclamation point to his historic 2010 campaign by being honored by Ryan Communications Group’s (RCG) Dirt Sports Magazine as “2010 Driver of the Year.” The talented and determined Huseman took top honors in this year’s selection, but was also joined by fellow racers David Caspino as “2010 Desert Racer of the Year,” Loren Healy as “2010 Rock Racer of the Year,” and young Colton “CJ” Greaves, who was named as the magazine’s “2010 Rookie of the Year.”

Last season, Huseman piloted the Rick Huseman Racing (RHR) black #36 Monster Energy/Traxxas/ BFGoodrich Tires/ Method Race Wheels/Mastercraft Safety/Oakley/KC HiLites Toyota Tundra to a record 10 LOORRS race wins – a professional short course record. Along with his LOORRS championship, the Riverside, Calif. resident also managed to claim runner-up honors in the Traxxas TORC series, with five PRO 4×4 race wins and five Oakley Bomb awards for posting the fastest race lap.
The enthusiastic winner was honored by Dirt Sports magazine publisher/owner Jim Ryan and LOORRS television announcer Cameron Steele during a special ceremony held in the massive Monster Energy hospitality area at this past weekend’s Supercross event at Anaheim Stadium. During the ceremony, Huseman’s gritty February 2011 cover, shot by artist Boyd Jaynes, was also unveiled.

As part of the festivities, Huseman, and fellow honoree, CJ Greaves, were awarded a custom-made presentation box by Oakley featuring a specially engraved watch and high performance sunglasses; along with a one-of-a-kind Oakley “Driver of the Year” jacket. Caspino was recognized last Friday during the Best in the Desert (BITD) Parker 425 official driver’s meeting, while Healy will be honored at this week’s King of the Hammers rock racing event.

“It is now almost to the point of being cliché, but the selection process is really becoming more difficult every year as there is a raised level of competition in every core category that makes up Dirt Sports magazine,” said Marty Fiolka, group editorial and marketing director for RCG. “The 2010 season saw incredible performances by a wide variety of racers, but in the end, Rick Huseman’s incredibly focused performance in short course stood out above the rest. All of the Dirt Sports’ honorees for 2010 are highly deserving in recognizing their outstanding achievements and contributions to off-road motorsports.”

In choosing each of their past winners, the panel of judges made their final determinations based upon drivers posting a championship performance, their ability to represent both the sport and their sponsors in a professional manner, and their ability to rise above the competition in a significant manner.

In earning this year’s Driver of the Year title, Huseman added his name to a sparkling list of previous Dirt Sports honorees, including the late Jason Baldwin (2004), Shannon Campbell (2005), Carl Renezeder (2006), Rob MacCachren (2007) and Heidi Steele (2008). Last year, third generation racer Andy McMillin claimed the top award.
“To win the Dirt Sports Driver of the Year title is awesome because you are not just being judged against short course racers, but desert and rock guys too,” explained Huseman. “You are being judged against everyone in the dirt, so to be the Driver of the Year against that kind of competition is just very amazing.”

For the second time in the award’s history, the magazine honored other forms of off-road motorsports not represented by the overall winner. Known as the “Dirt Sports Honorees,” those chosen in these categories will also receive special Oakley watches and jackets. Last year’s list included Carl Renezeder, who claimed two championships in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS), Colorado’s Brad Lovell, a rock racing veteran that also took dual titles in the W.E.Rock and XXRA series, and the multi-talented Jeff Ward, who enjoyed a spectacular first season in LOORRS Unlimited 2 competition.

Baja Racing of Texas

Ft. Worth, TX. (February 1, 2011) Exciting news from the Lone Star state as a new off-road race series is announced today. Baja Racing of Texas, LLC (BRT) will be launching a new off road racing series for the upcoming 2011 season. The BRT was formed by Chris Leitner (BRT President) and is the next step in the continuing growth of off-road racing in Texas. The goal of the BRT is to provide safe, fun and challenging racing venues for the entire off-road community. In light of the current issues plaguing the southern borders of the US and the on-going changes plaguing the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) over land use on the west coast, Texas is primed to be the future of off road racing in the United States. Leitner stated “When you look at the states that have the land to hold these type of events the list is very short and the fact that Texas land is privately owned with no BLM interaction, then Texas really is the next step for the off-road community. We plan to offer the ‘Texas Premiere Off-Road Racing Experience’ to the racers, fans and sponsors attending our events”.

Leitner has assembled a large staff to assist him in this project. This group has an impressive 100 plus years of combined experience in organizing, promoting and participating in off-road racing events.

Since all of the land in Texas is privately owned, successful partnerships with Landowners have been established and additional land owners will be on board for the 2012 season. Leitner stated “We are focused on working with new property owners, Texas based businesses, The Texas Motorized Trails Coalition and other race organizations to establish new locations for future events.” The BRT will be running their 2011 off road racing events at Texana Ranch located in Blackwell, TX starting with the Blackwell 250 April 7-10. This 4,682 acre property has been owned by the Beal family since 1979 and offers a variety of terrains not often seen at west coast off-road racing events. Instead of the vast expanses of sand and cactus, the 40+ mile course at Texana Ranch winds through tree-filled areas, dry creek beds and up and down hills.

BRT will be offering familiar race classes, safety guidelines and has established a relationship with the rock crawling community to incorporate 4-wheel drive (Ultra 4) vehicles into the series as well as an endurance Motorcycle race at the October 27-30 event. Chris Leitner stated
“We are looking forward to our relationship with Cameron Chin with Krawltex Motorsports and Jeremy Dickinson who will be spearheading our new 4400 race class. We know these guys will bring some great competition and great viewing for the spectators.”

Video producer Rigoberto Castro of Rigo’s Video covered the 43rd annual Baja 1000 from 12 locations on the route, and has assembled this promo. It shows some of the more challenging aspects of the race in those areas that many do not get to see, unless they are racing.

This is ‘Silt Madness’ and shows just how difficult the race was this year. To win the Baja 1000, you have to beat all the competitors, and you have to beat the desert herself.

December 3rd and 4th marked the final race of The Lucas Oil Regional (ASCC) 2010 series. Arriving to Speedworld Raceway Park in February many people were skeptical that the series would last. However with an average of 60 entries a race and over 160 different racers, the Lucas Oil Regional Series is here to stay. With the entries rising and the competition getting fierce for the final race of season, this race would be the best race yet. Friday afternoon was the first practice, with perfect weather and perfect track conditions. It was a great day of practice with a bunch of trucks and buggies tearing up the track.

UTV class

Saturday would be a big day, the final race of the season on the line many teams were eager for the points champion. With practice, heat races and the main events all being held during the morning and mid afternoon. The first race of the day was the UTV class. In SR1 class, Mark Turner was on top of his game in the Daystar SR1 and took the win, with Keaton Swane coming in second. In Limited UTV Patrick Keisling took the win and the fall series championship. Clayton Graham would take second after a hard fought battle to the finish with Cody Hukill .

Trophy Karts

Next up was the trophy karts. Being the final race of the season it was the best racing all year with rivalries and close points battles. Sterling Cling took the lead early in the race and ran with it, but Isabella Naughton battled for second and won the fall series championship. Jeff Hoffman took a respectable third place finish. In the Pee Wee class Parker Steele came out on top after a vigorous battle Isabella Naughton who took second and Alyssa Ryan would kick the boys out of the podium and take third. Lastly was the trophy kart Mini class. With Krista Smith taking the win and the championship and Kol Bailey taking second. Taylor Ayers beat the competition and took the third place spot. Next up to the track was the buggy classes of desert, short course limited and unlimited. In the Desert Buggy class The young driver Dillion Ayers won the race and the championship, with Kevin Streety coming in second in his lothringer race car and Stephen Fluharty taking third. In short course limited was one of the best races of the year with seven entries made for some door to door action. In the end Kevin McCullough took the win and the points championship. In second place was Hayden Melton and rounding out the top third spot was John Proctor. Short course unlimited was next with another great race between Greg Reichman and the Tucson native Ron Dalke. In the end Dalke would win the race with Reichman coming in second, and winning the championship. Carl Rohrer earned the third place spot.

Truck classes

Next up was the truck classes with the high flying, door banging stock truck class. This was the best race of the weekend, with the stock class dialed in and competition getting better and better it was an awesome race. Steve Arlia won the heat race but due to a blown tire a few laps into the race he was out of contention. In the end Kyle Green pulled out the stops and took the win and the championship. With Jake Munns coming in second and Brenden Beeler coming in third. In the 1450 class Brian Cannon came back to Az dominate the class and take the win. However Paul Holguin took second and the championship after a violent roll with 2 laps to go. In Heavy Metal class, there was plenty of carnage. In the heat race Shaun Davis caught a bad rut and roll his truck, however they got it back together for the main event taking the win and the championship. Scott McCracken would bust a spindle and hold it for second place.

That concludes a great season of racing for the Lucas Oil Regional Series (ASCC). Stay tuned for the 2011 series with more races and tracks at Speedworld, Firebird, and Kingman.
