It’s not often when the “to do” list for prepping your race car includes installing a pink feather boa but that’s the case every year in October when the ladies take over the driving duties in the MORE, Powder-puff, Race for the Cure. Now in its sixth year, the race raised money for women’s cancer research through donations, a raffle held the evening of the race and a portion of the entry fees collected by Mojave Off-road Racing Enthusiast, (MORE). Raffle prizes were donated by sponsors, parts suppliers and the off-road community as a whole. The cars were adorned with pink ribbons and pink paint jobs. Many had tributes to loved ones saved and sadly, some lost.

The skill levels of the ladies driving vary between never driven a manual transmission until yesterday to top level pros that save their benevolence for the raffle after the race. Some teams switch drivers every lap to give everyone a chance to drive. The cars are divided into two groups, the limited cars race in the morning and the faster cars run in the afternoon. The first group has some great drivers but for the most part these are the ladies out having fun and not taking things too seriously. Of course we all know things change when the green flag drops. The afternoon group has a mix of unlimited open wheel cars, some 1600’s, 10’s, 12’s and several truck classes. You might see a car that ran in the morning but now it’s being piloted with a lot more exuberance. Regardless if they are fast or not, everyone involved was there for a great time and a great cause, to help make sure we are celebrating more survivors next year. Congratulations to all the drivers and crew, the class winners and the overall winner Shelby Reid who ran six laps at a blistering pace to be the fastest driver of the day.

Yajaira Baro conquered her second overall win in the last 3 years at the Chicas off road “100 miles of natural makeup” off road race, with this she becomes the queen of female power.

Baro took advantage of Carolina Becerra’s DNF after the Ford F150 of San Vicente Racing driven by Becerra had mechanical problems during the 5^th lap.

At this years event the racers went around a 13 mile race course for a total of 7 laps, except for the slower classes like Class 9, 11 and Safari that were only required to complete 5 laps

Keeping the tradition of this third edition of this particular off road race only women were allowed to either drive or be co-pilot, the husbands had to let their wives drive the race cars and they could only help at the pits.

A total of 18 vehicles, some of them have participated at least once in a SCORE International event which brought the level of competition higher and faster along the route that was at the scenic Rancho Rincon de Guadalupe in San Vicente.

The shocking moment of the race was when Monica Muñoz flipped up in the air driving her team’s class 10.

Muñoz came out without a scratch and her copilot only had some minor bruises to worry about, these after they flipped and rolled when they entered a silt bed at a very high speed and lost control just shy of completing their 6^th lap.

Lilly Rodriguez proved that she can not only be a great cook but also a great driver of her off road buggy by winning the Class 14 with an official time of 2:28:50.

Monica Monsivais from Ensenada’s F&L Racing Team conquered Class 11 driving her husband Juan Avila’s Bug, the same that he will be racing at this years Baja 1000.

Monsivais beat Brenda Amador by a great margin even after her second driver rolled the car they still came out with the victory at San Vicente.

All women from Ensenada and Baja California had fun at the event promoted by Viry Felix.

For this years event it was even open for motorcycles but there were none, hopefully next year there will be brave ladies willing to get dirty on bikes.

The race promoter Viry Felix was happy with the response of the participants hoping that in 2012 more women from Mexico and USA will join this with the idea that at least once a year the female power will be present in Baja.

Yajaira Baro conquistó su segundo triunfo overall en los últimos 3 años de la carrera fuera de camino Chicas Off Road, “100 Millas de Makeup Natural”, por lo que se convirtió en la reina del poder femenino.

Baro aprovechó el abandono de Carolina Becerra, quien tuvo problemas mecánicos en la vuelta 5 con el Ford F-150 del equipo San Vicente Racing.

En esta ocasión todas las corredoras tuvieron que darle varias vueltas a una ruta de 13 millas, en las clases rápidas fueron 7, teniendo que completar solamente 5 en las menos veloces como la 9, 11 y Safari.

Como ha sido en las 3 ediciones del evento fuera de camino, solamente pudieron participar mujeres, como piloto o copiloto, siendo esta una forma de que sus esposos les prestaran sus unidades y ahora ellos se dedicarán a ayudarles en labores de pits.

Un total de 18 vehículos, algunos de ellos que han participado en por lo menos en una ocasión en alguna carrera de Score International, con lo que el nivel de competencia fue bueno y con altas velocidades a lo largo de la ruta que tuvo como escenario el rancho Rincón de Guadalupe en San Vicente.

El momento impresionante de la carrera fue el que protagonizó Mónica Muñoz, al volar por los aires a bordo del Clase 10 de su equipo.

Muñoz salió sin problemas y su copiloto tuvo algunos golpes, esto tras dar un par de vueltas por los aires, tras entrarle a una velocidad muy fuerte a una zona de talcos a unas millas de terminar la vuelta 6.

Lilly Rodríguez demostró que no solamente sabe cocinar bien, también manejar un Buggy todo terreno al ganar la Clase 14 con un tiempo oficial de 2 horas, 28 minutos y 50 segundos.

La ensenadense Mónica Monsiváis de la escudería F y L Racing capturó el triunfo en la Clase 11, siendo esta unidad con la que participará su esposo Juan Ávila en la próxima Baja 1000.

Monsiváis le ganó por amplia diferencia a Brenda Amador y ni siquiera una volteada por parte de su coequipera afectó la victoria que consiguieron en San Vicente.

En esta ocasión la convocatoria de la carrera estuvo abierta a motocicletas, pero no hubo respuesta, esperando que para el próximo año si surjan valientes que intenten llenarse de polvo en esta modalidad.

Norco, Ca. –Monday October 11^th, 2010 - The King Shocks #7212 Ford Ranger takes home 1^st place at the 5^th Annual MORE, Powder Puff Race for the Cure, this past weekend in Barstow California.

The King Shocks sponsored unlimited class 7 truck was driven by seasoned driver, Andrea Pathiakis who along with her co-driver Athena Kepler drove over 100 miles, completing 4 laps of the course. Starting second, Pathiakis quickly chased down the first 7 unlimited truck to leave the line as well as a number of other competitive cars from other classes.

The girls drove at a smooth, fast, and calculated pace, which proved to be the winning combination. The team nearly had a race ending incident in the beginning of lap 3 when a 1400 class driver veered sharply to the left coming into contact with 7212’s passenger door and bedside. Despite the massive amount of body damage to the race truck nobody was injured. “We were down for about 30 minutes while getting the trucks untangled safely, said Pathiakis, I also took some time on the radio with my team to verify that our axle was not broken before we continued. Without a doubt I was not stoked after the contact but I guess that’s racing. Overall, it was a successful day.”

Aside from the accident, the team had a flawless race with no repairs or flat tires to contend with unlike the many other competitors stopped on the side of the course waiting for their support crews to make repairs.

Andrea and Athena were ecstatic after taking first place, coming into the pits Andrea revved the motor in joy as if she had just won over-all at the Baja 1000. “The truck ran perfect, I could not be any happier. I held a consistent speed, and picked my lines perfectly. The transmission ran cool, our new Goodyear tires gave us great traction with no flats on this brutal Barstow course and the King 3.5 inch shocks proved to be a huge part in keeping our speed up so we could stay on top of the huge holes, said Andrea. What a way to take the checkered flag!”

MORE has put together the Powder Puff Race for the Cure for five years now and each year has become more and more successful. Half of each entry fee from the nearly 200 female competitors is donated to Cedar Sinai Hospital for breast cancer research. Donations have totaled over $100,000 in previous years. This years total donation amount is still being counted but it should be respectable thanks to a large, $50,000 donation given to MORE by event sponsor Royal Purple Synthetic Oils along with several other others coming from some of the biggest names in off-road racing.

This event brings together successful drivers, teams and thousands of their friends and families to support a great cause that will hopefully help Cedar Sinai find a cure for breast cancer.

Barstow, CA (October 11, 2010)—Somehow “Powder Puff” and “Mojave Desert” do not seem to go together. But that was the case this past weekend as the Mojave Off-Road Racing Enthusiast (MORE) held their fifth annual Powder Puff race for Breast Cancer Awareness on October 8th and 9th. The race, which originates in Barstow, CA, consists of completing as many laps as possible during a four hour time period around the 27 mile course through the Mojave Desert.

Proceeds from the race went directly to Cedars-Sinai Ladies Breast Cancer Research Institute in Los Angeles, CA. A host of corporate sponsors also chipped in with donations along with raffles and other fund raising activities for a sizable contribution.

Angie Dailey, Kathy Greaves, Michelle Huseman, and Gabriel Carpenter, using Dailey Motorsports’ truck, tag teamed to win the TrophyLite class and came in second in the Class 3000. The girls completed five grueling laps in the four hour time frame. The first 2 laps were driven by Angie Dailey, wife of Patrick Dailey and co-owner of Dailey Motorsports, with desert racer Gabriel Carpenter riding shotgun. Kathy Greaves, wife of TORC Series Pro 4 champion Johnny Greaves, took over on laps 3-5 with Michelle Huseman, wife of Rick Huseman, last year’s Pro 4 champion, serving as the co-pilot. The ladies were decked out in their husband’s racing firesuits.

This year’s event began Friday evening at the of factory outlet mall in Barstow with tech and contingency sign in. Saturday’s racing started early and went until 4 pm. Following the race there was a BBQ and live concert following along with the raffle.

“We had such a great time,” said Kathy Greaves. “The course was really rough. Michelle did a great job guiding me through the dust and keeping us on track—in other words, we didn’t get lost! Angie and Gabby were awesome—they gave us a great start by maneuvering through all the traffic and thick dust at the start of the race. That was critical to make sure the truck was 100% when we took over. I have a new appreciation for off-road racers. We had a blast and glad we could contribute and bring awareness to this worthy cause.”

Barstow, California. October 9, 2010: 5 years ago, The M.O.R.E desert racing series put on the first Powder Puff race with a majority of the proceeds going to the Cedars-Sinai’ Ladies Breast Cancer Research Institute in Los Angeles, Ca.  In 5 short years, this has been the event for all women in the off road industry.  Over 200 vehicles were entered in the “All Girls” race, with corporate sponsors showing their support by donating BIG money for the cause.  Royal Purple alone donated $50,000!

At the start of the race, Tracy was really taking it easy, trying to get use to the car and how it reacted to the course.  While the guys waited patiently in the pits, a voice came over the radio, “we’re coming in to the pits!”  Bewildered, the crew asked “what’s wrong?”  Turns out 30 miles is about all that their bladders could handle and they came in for a true “Pit Stop”!Tracy and Lindsey Ward were set to tackle the rough and tumble Barstow desert in their FIRST race as drivers.  Tracy would take the first 2 laps while daughter Lindsey would finish it up.  Nerves would set in quickly once the two girls were strapped into the race car.  Tracy was extremely nervous for two reasons:  The first being she had never raced before and two, she didn’t want to hurt her husband’s BRAND NEW race car which HE had not even raced yet.

Tracy’s second lap would be about 6 minutes faster than her first as she was getting more comfortable in the car and doing a lot more dicing with other racers.  As she came in for their “scheduled” pit stop, the girl’s switched seats and Lindsey would now take the wheel.

Lindsey caught on quickly as she was able to do 2 full prerun laps with her mom.  Turns out the only thing that might have worked better for these two would be to turn off the intercom between them!  Seems they were bickering like a couple old ladies the entire time, quality mother/daughter time.  Lindsey would finish the day with a 52 minute lap time and a 12^th place finish!  Not bad for a couple girls who only had about 15 minutes of seat time in the race car.

Stickered up the car and Chad Fryman @ Nteense Tee’s donated the custom “Save the Boobies” t-shirts.   The Checkers pit club also showed support by pitting for ANYONE who ran a “Checkers” sticker on their race car with a $100 donation to the cause.  Last but not least, Tri State CareFlight really stepped to the plate.  Not only did they sponsor our race car, they liked the idea of the event so much they donated $1000 to Cedars-Sinai’ the day before the race

The annual MORE, Powder Puff, Race for the Cure in Barstow, California brings together a unique mix of cars and drivers every October during Breast Cancer awareness month. Older, sometimes previously retired cars race alongside state of the art, high dollar machines. The female racers are just as diverse, ranging from first timers to seasoned pros. The one thing they all have in common, along with everyone else in attendance, is their support for breast cancer research.

Since the events inception, the desert racing community has been successful in raising significant donations for Cedar-Sinai Hospital’s ladies breast cancer research institute. The institute tirelessly researches treatments and cures for the disease because unfortunately, too many wives, mothers, girlfriends and sisters, as well as their loved ones, have been affected by this horrible disease. Not many are aware that men can develop breast cancer as well but it’s rare compared to women.

The Powder Puff race however, is all about the ladies. Cars are decked out in pink boas, pink ribbons and others are painted pink. For some of these cars, this is the best they will look all season because the teams go all out to put on a great show. Some even go to great lengths adorning their vehicles with some of the largest over the shoulder boulder holders I’ve ever seen, of course they are pink too. Some teams show up dressed in pink and several men have been seen in all types of female attire. Cars carry the names of survivors as well as some loved ones who were lost. We all grieve for them but this event does not dwell on the loss, instead it celebrates their lives. It gives tribute to the positive impacts these brave ladies gave us while they were here and their inspiration that lives on. That’s what makes this event unlike any other. It’s a positive “vibe” for lack of a better word that permeates the race. I’ve always felt that about the Powder Puff race but it really hit home after talking to first time competitor Nicole Pitell-Vaughan who drove the Total Chaos, Toyota Tacoma to first place in class 1400. Nicole admitted to driving the “bleep” out of the truck and had the blisters on both hands to prove it. She credits the trucks performance to the Total Chaos crew who did the prep and her Mother in Law Kathy Vaughan for the inspiration. Kathy is a cancer survivor who beat the terrible disease. Nicole’s trophy is going to Kathy.

Thanks to the work that Cedar-Sinai and others are doing the survival rate of patients at all three stages of the disease continues to rise. Nicole and Kathy’s stories are similar to many of the competitors. Hopefully with the great support from MORE, the desert racing community, sponsors like Royal Purple, who donated 50,000 dollars to the cause! and the hard working doctors at Cedar-Sinai the survival rates will continue to rise. If you’ve never been to the race, make sure you attend next year’s race; you too can experience the outpouring of good will and the great times had by all.

Westhoff Motorsports has taken part in this event since the inaugural race in 2006. This year will be no different as Brittany Westhoff will once again represent Westhoff Motorsports in their ½-1600 with sister Jordan Cunningham in the right seat guiding them along the way. Before getting behind the wheel in the #1691 Brittany will share driving duties in the Hooked Up Motorsports Class 9 car with Tori Poole and Hope Hughes.

Please come join the fun and support a great cause starting with Tech and Contingency which will be held at the Barstow Outlet Factory Mall on Friday October 9, 2009 from 5pm-9pm.

The action will continue Saturday with the first group taking off at 8:30AM and Group 2 to begin at 12:30PM.

The awards ceremony, BBQ with Music and Raffle will begin at 5PM so don’t disappear after we take the checkered flag.

Corona, California (September 15th, 2009) – Join the Woman of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) in the fight for the cure for breast cancer on October 10that the 2009 4th Annual MORE Powder Puff Race for the Cure. One in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life. Over 200,000 US women will be diagnosed this year. 40,000 will not survive. Cedar Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Center is fighting to find a cure for this horrible disease that affects so many people.

The MORE Powder Puff Race for the Cure is an all female off road race held in the desert of Barstow, CA put on by the great people at MORE (Mojave Off Road Enthusiasts). Women will come together from around the country to “race for the cure” and help to raise money for the Cedar Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Center. Last year’s event raised over $115,000 with 186 teams competing. All proceeds and contributions go directly to the center and are completely tax deductible.

The Women of LORRS is a five vehicle off road racing team comprised of Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series technical Inspection and on-track support personnel, employees and their family members. Joining Sherry Vanillo and daughters Crystal and Tanya in the Class 1 North American Off Road Truck are the Class 10 Buggy of Poppy Perfect, the Class 5 Unlimited of Kristina Dague, Class 9 buggy campaigned by Paula MacDonald and Andi Wagner and the UTV of Jeanette Sappington.

In addition to the support of Lucas Oil Products, the team has received generous contributions from Bully Dog Technologies, Ntensetees, RockStar Energy Drink, Lawson Products, and Symons Safety. Through their association with the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, the team has also made arrangements for the series safety team as well as the series Toyota support vehicles to be on-site throughout the race course to assist all participants.
