Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno is the longest, most treacherous, off-road race in the United States. Starting outside of Las Vegas in the mining town of Beatty, NV, the 550-mile course winds its way across the badlands of Nevada. Racers encounter a mix of high-speed graded roads, wicked silt beds, rocky washes, mountain passes, and giant rolling hills. With more than 300 entries, this race is one of the most difficult to finish, let alone win.

The Monster Energy Off-Road Team lead by Trophy Truck Champion “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin came with guns blazing as the team managed to qualify four vehicles in the top-20 during qualifying on Wednesday. The team consisted of “Ballistic” BJ Baldwin, Troy Herbst, Tim Herbst, Larry Roesler, Jerry Zaiden, and Jerry Whelchel in Trophy Trucks. Representing Monster Energy in Class 1 was bike veteran Mikey Childress.

Huntington Beach, CA – BITD’s Vegas to Reno is one of the most challenging races of the season. It’s the longest off-road race in the U.S. during the heat of the summer. It tests both man and machine to extreme limits. This year’s race was 550 miles through the toughest desert terrain starting in Beatty, Nevada just outside of Las Vegas and finishing in Dayton, Nevada near Reno.

Wednesday before the race, the Trick Truck’s and Unlimited buggies had their qualifying event 20 minutes north of Las Vegas at an undisclosed location. The field of over 60 vehicles set out to do a practice lap and then staged in the blistering sun. Camburg was 9th off the line and threw down a competitive lap time. Qualifiers are staggered every 1 minute, but a fellow competitor ahead blew an engine and was being towed off course which added 3-5 seconds to their overall time from the distraction. BITD officials gave the option to re-do the run but the team declined the opportunity as they felt they had a fast enough run to not have to beat up the truck more, when this race is the longest and most challenging. The #75 truck qualified 14th in class and 22nd overall.

Come race day the team staged in Beatty and the chase trucks headed out to their respective pits. Starting the race with Championship Winning Jerry Whelchel in the driver’s seat and Craig Hall as co-driver, they were off the line at 9:52 am. By mile 100 on corrected time, Camburg was in the top 10 overall and 8th in class and steadily moving forward. With a flawless race so far, Jerry stopped at Pit 5 for fuel. Quickly back under way they were to race speed and moving up positions as the General Grabber race tires we’re hooking up in the Nevada desert.

Coming into Pit 10 at Mina 359 miles into the race, the Camburg team was now 4th in position and 3rd on corrected time. Whelchel pulled into the pits for fuel and a possible driver change with Jerry Zaiden. Now sitting on a podium position it was decided to keep Whelchel in the seat as positions were only minutes apart. With a stellar pit stop they were back on course.

Just past Pit 13 according to live timing by Race-Dezert.com, Camburg was close to 1st place on corrected time. With nearly 80 miles to the finish the pace was slowed when the driveshaft met its fate on a huge rock. This dent caused a bad vibration over 80 mph, but with this section of the course being slow and twisty it was decided to drive through it as to stop and change it would add too much time with everyone still so close. Shortly after Pit 14 they got around another truck that was actually behind them on corrected time and hit a huge rock in dust that peeled the beadlock ring back and caused the tire to deflate. A portion of the tire then wrapped around the axle housing and brakes, thankfully it didn’t take out the brake lines. This is where time was lost and Camburg fell down a few positions. Still hoping for a strong finish, Whelchel charged to the finish line in the low light.

The #75 Camburg Racing Trick Truck crossed the finish line in 10hrs 18mn 49 sec placing 4th in class and 7th overall only minutes from the podium. Now sitting in 5th and only 17 points out of 1st for the year with two races to go, expect to see some great racing at Parker and Henderson.

Camburg would like to thank all their sponsors, team members and fellow racers for the opportunity to be racing in this elite class.

“Our team worked really hard coming into this race and to have a solid finish in one of the longest offroad races only solidifies the work and testing that was done. The truck was running up front all day long with no issues.” – Jerry Zaiden

“Testing a week before, I knew we’d have a great race. Camburg has put together a truck that handles extremely well and is very competitive. This race just proved that.” – Jerry Whelchel

In only his second season racing in Best In The Desert’s unlimited ranks, Garrick Freitas has made his presence known by winning the TSCO Vegas to Reno race. Winning in desert racing’s premier Class 1500 and coming in 2nd overall out of 298 vehicles in the longest off-road race in America was anything but easy though. Freitas was still harboring demons from last year’s Vegas to Reno event. In 2010 Garrick was running at the front of the pack when he cart wheeled his Jimco Champion less than 100 miles from the finish line.

Knowing that in order to finish first, first you must finish, Garrick took a more conservative approach to this year’s race. This philosophy netted him a starting position of 26th from Friday’s qualifying, well back from his 9th place qualifying position at last year’s race. Even that did not cause him to deviate from his game plan though, and the Tulare, California resident knew that he had to remain patient to overcome not only the 38 other Class 1500 competitors vying for the win, but also the 549 miles of brutal Nevada desert.

When the green flag dropped, Garrick quickly settled in to a fast and sustainable pace in his Jimco Champion with his father Danny navigating. “Everything just fell into place today,” Garrick noted at the finish line. “We were 2nd in points coming into Vegas to Reno last year and the wreck basically ended our season. I was not about to make the same mistakes this year; my goal was to finish the race without any flat tires.” This strategy, combined with skillful and efficient pitting from his family and friends, resulted in Freitas never getting passed while in the pits. Instead, Garrick passed many other teams dealing with mechanical issues to move forward in the field. Approximately half way from Vegas to Reno, at Race Mile 219, Danny Freitas gave up the passenger seat to Garrick’s cousin Trevor, who navigated Garrick to victory. “We have been very consistent and had strong finishes but it sure feels good to win, especially after what happened last year at this same race,” Garrick humbly confessed following the race.

After 10 hours of fierce competition, Freitas finished just five minutes behind the overall winner and ten minutes ahead of current Class 1500 leader Steve Appleton. The class victory catapulted Freitas and his team from 4th in season points up to 2nd place and puts them right in the hunt for the $9000 Camburg “Best In The Desert” award for the fastest average speed over every mile of every race for the season. Freitas and his team now return home to Tulare, California to prep their Jimco Champion for the BITD Bluewater Desert Challenge on October 14-16 in Parker, Arizona.

John Swift and Steve Olliges knew that competition would be tough for the 2011 Best In The Desert Vegas to Reno race when over 250 drivers tossed their hat in the ring. The entry list for the longest desert race in America included 27 competitors in the marquee Trick Truck class, all vying with the No. 28 BFGoodrich / MasterCraft Safety truck of Swift and Olliges. The event started with tech and contingency, where the biggest buzz was not about their unlimited Trick Truck, but Olliges’ beautiful ’79 Ford F150 that will be campaigned in Best In The Desert’s Class 8 starting at the Bluewater Desert Challenge in October. “The truck really resonates with people, young and old, who appreciate desert racing’s rich heritage,” Olliges noted.

Swift and Olliges qualified 37th for Vegas to Reno, demonstrating that the present day competition is blistering fast. In order to finish well in the 549-mile race across the harsh Nevada desert, Swift and Olliges would have to run a nearly flawless race; and when the green flag dropped that is just what they did. Steve Olliges set a fast pace from the start with Jason Bateman navigating. An electrical issue was addressed early on by their expert pit crew, and Steve handed off the truck to Jonathan Swift and Daniel Llewelyn who opened up the new Dougan Racing Ford engine to turn the 39-inch BFGoodrich Project tires as fast as possible, taking turns picking off competitors and marching forward in the crowded field.

Jonathan’s father John Swift finished the race with his daughter Lauren navigating. After ten hours of racing, less than twenty minutes separated the No. 28 BFGoodrich / MasterCraft Safety truck from the winner, resulting in the 5th place overall and 3rd amongst 27 Trick Trucks. The strong finish catapulted Swift and Olliges forward in season points from 9th all the way up to 3rd place in class with two more races remaining this season. “Fox spent the time to tune our 4.4-inch bypass shocks specifically for this terrain, which were a huge factor in our success,” Steve Olliges commented after the race. “The shocks performed just as well at Mile 549 as they did at Mile 1.”

The next race for the Swift/Olliges team is Best in the Desert’s Bluewater Desert Challenge on October 14-16 in Parker, Arizona. In the meantime Steve Olliges is busy running Team Ford, the No. 1 volume Ford dealer in Las Vegas for the past four years. Team Ford has a strong commitment to the desert racing community, including selling more Ford SVT Raptors than any other dealership in the country and stepping up as the title sponsor for JD Film’s new Dezert People 9 film.

About Steve Olliges:

Steve Olliges last won BITD’s Trick Truck championship in 2007 with his good friend Wayne Lugo. Steve has over 30 class wins and seven series championships to his credit in the Best in the Desert and SCORE International racing series. In 2000, Olliges partnered up with fellow Rough Rider Rob MacCachren to win the Best in the Desert Series championship in a class 7S Ford Ranger Edge. What began as a one year agreement to race Ford’s newly launched Ranger evolved into a five year partnership culminating in three championship titles. The two teamed up again to race the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor in 2009, showcasing Ford’s factory-built desert truck. Steve has been loyal to Ford throughout his entire racing career, and owns and operates the highly successful Team Ford dealership in Las Vegas, Nevada. For more information please visitwww.teamford.com.

About John Swift:

John Swift was introduced to the excitement of desert racing by his father Ray back in the ’60s when the sport was in its infancy. By 1984 John was already in the seat of his own race truck and well on his way to success. John’s weapon of choice was the Ford Ranger platform, which he used to win both the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 in Class 7 in 1989. John Swift’s success continued as he piloted his Ranger to another Baja 500 win in 1991, the year he joined the Ford Rough Riders. John claimed three successive Class 6 titles for Ford piloting his iconic Ford Explorer, making him the winningest driver for the Ford Rough Riders factory program. For more information about the Swift Racing legacy please visit www.swiftrace.com.

Las Vegas, Nevada, August 25, 2011

In a press release issued by the Nevada State BLM Office No. 2011-41, Outdoor Recreational Planner, Leo Drumm praised the Best In The Desert Racing Association for having a good safety record and planning for all contingencies.

Following is the transcript from their release:

Longest Off-Road Race in US Goes Off Without a Hitch

Reno, Nev.— The Vegas to Reno Off-Road Race brought more than 5,000 people through 16 rural Nevada communities and over 500 miles of BLM desert last weekend. While race safety is a priority in permitting the event, the economic boost to these communities is vital, too.

There were no major accidents and only a couple of minor medical incidents. The BLM will continue to permit off-highway-vehicle racing on public lands while working with promoters and participants to improve safety and reduce the impacts to public lands.

“The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was comfortable permitting this event,” said Leo Drumm, outdoor recreation planner. “The race promoter, Best in the Desert, has a good safety record and planned for all contingencies.”

The race is held annually on established roads on public lands in Nevada. The race has continued running for over 20 years and has become a part of the state’s history.

Starting near Beatty, Nev., to avoid Mojave desert tortoise habitat, motorcycles, quads, buggies and unlimited trucks headed north and traveled through 16 rural Nevada towns along the way. In Tonopah, restaurants were full and gas stations were busy.

Before issuing the Special Recreation Permit (SRP) for the Best in the Desert Racing Association, the BLM analyzed the Environmental Assessments (EA) used for permitting the event in previous years and determined the EAs provided adequate environmental analysis to permit the event for this year.

Best In The Desert official sponsors: Ford Motor Company – official truck, General Tire – official tire, Lucas Oil – official oil, VP Racing Fuels – official fuel, KC HiLiTES – official light, John Deere – official UTV, Husqvarna – official motorcycle, Fabtech – Official Suspension, Fall Advertising, Prerunner Maniac, McKenzies, PCI Race Radios, Azunia Tequila, and Sportsman Cycle Sales.

“The Longest Off-Road Race in the United States”

The third race on the 2011 Best In The Desert Racing Association Car and Truck schedule is the TSCO “Vegas to Reno”, also titled as the “The Longest Off-Road Race in the United States,” was held Friday August 19, 2011. The start of the race was in Beatty, NV, North West of Las Vegas NV, and finished in Dayton, NV, a small city South East of Reno NV. The Course crisscrossed the Nevada Desert, covering 549 miles of the some of the harshest and scenic areas in the western United States.

Randy Merritt and Tracy Rubio teamed up to drive this adventurous race in the General Tire, KC Hilites, Knock Out Energy 2011 Ford F-150, while Chris Golding rode the entire race in the navigator’s seat. Tracy Rubio started the race in the driver’s seat and within a few short miles drove with in 30 – 40 seconds of the lead truck in the class. On corrected time the General Tire, KC Hilites, Knock Out Energy 2011 Ford F-150 was first in class. At mile marker 47, Tracy and Chris assumed the lead, not only on corrected time but the physical lead and didn’t look back.

Randy Merritt took over the driving duties of the General Tire, KC Hilites, Knock Out Energy 2011 Ford F-150 in Goldfield NV with a 100 plus mile lead on the other trucks in the class. Randy made a quick 1 minute stop at the pit in Klondike NV to change fuel pumps as the fuel pressure was beginning to fluctuate at higher RPMs under acceleration. Chris radioed into the crew after the pit stop and said the issue was fixed.

Tracy Rubio got back behind wheel of the General Tire, KC Hilites, Knock Out Energy 2011 Ford F-150 at Millers NV with a 200 mile lead. Tracy maintained the steady pace until Mina NV.

Randy Merritt returned to the Driver seat of the General Tire, KC Hilites, Knock Out Energy 2011 Ford F-150 for the final 190 miles. Driving into the darkness of the Nevada Desert was made easy with the assistance of the 10 forward facing 8 inch 70W HID POD lights by KC Hilites. Randy was able to keep up his pace to Dayton NV where he crossed the finish line in 1st place after 14 hours 5 minutes in the Nevada desert.

At the finish line Randy said, “It’s been awhile, but winning the Longest Off-Road Race in the United States feels great. The General Tire, KC Hilites, Knock Out Energy 2011 Ford F-150 ran great all day and the Eco Boost 3.5L V-6 Direct Injection Twin Turbo engine again proved to be enough to conquer the harsh Nevada desert, but we need to go back and try to determine what caused both of the fuel pumps in the truck to falter.”

Chris Golding added, “The crew did a great job all day and I didn’t have to get out of the truck.”

Randy added, “I drove over boulders and rocks at speeds that would make most cringe out there in the Nevada desert and that stuff would have destroyed most other tires, but again we finished on the same General Grabber tires we started on, saving us loads of time and energy.”

The Mongo Racing Ford F-150 is sponsored by General Grabber Tires, KC Hilites, Knock Out Energy, Sway-A-Way, Trail Ready Bead Lock Wheels, Yukon, EBC Brakes, Optima Batteries, Master Craft Safety Innovations, Lucas Oil, UMP, Camburg Engineering Products, MSD Ignition and Mongo Made Graphics.

Tuesday, August 23nd 2011

Yucaipa, CA

Milk-N-It Motorsports headed out to the Best in the Desert, Vegas to Reno off-road race, with the same confident exuberance as usual. The team has come a long way since that first race where they had little more than a car and a trailer and the will to succeed. The team’s collective experience in this first full season together has grown exponentially during the previous few races and it showed at Vegas to Reno, (V2R) when they qualified 16th overall, 8th in their class driving their 1500 Jimco Champion race car.

V2R is the longest desert race held in the US and travels through some of the most inhospitable and remote areas of the Nevada desert. The course is littered with ruts and rocks that are sometimes obscured by the countless silt beds that often emerge out of nowhere. It’s a grueling race that takes a toll on drivers, crew and equipment. As the drivers battle it out on the course crew members have to hustle to keep up as they leapfrog from pit to pit on their way to the finish in Reno. The sense of urgency adds to the tension as the field charges on forsaking all those who falter, leaving them behind in the dust.

Driver Todd Tuls and son TJ would drive the first half of the race and then hand the car off to Mark Miller and his son Jake. Tuls and Miller have been friends for 25 years and take great pleasure in sharing the trials and tribulations of racing with their 19 year old sons. There is nothing that compares to off-road racing for teaching the importance of hard work, sacrifice and perseverance.

Just before pit 4, Tj got his first action of the day when one of those hidden rocks bent a wheel causing the tire to go flat. The hard hit had bent the rim around the brake caliper causing a slight delay getting it changed. At pit 4 the team topped off the tank and put a fresh spare on the car before they headed back out into the fray. They were now making good time as the miles clicked past but again would suffer another flat, This time TJ had the tire changed and was strapped in ready to go in a mere 3 minutes. When they got to pit 7 the crew was there ready to fuel the car and check out the rest of the mechanicals. They warned of stragglers from the bike race who start early in the morning but had fallen way behind during the race.

After leaving pit 7 they were third in class making great time on the course and running just behind Roger Norman. Todd was on edge after hearing the reports of slow utv’s on the course. Milk-N-It motorsports has a strong will to win but not at any cost. Their commitment to safety for the crew and their fellow competitors trumps any race results at the end of the day.

As Todd and TJ were running through a dusty silt bed they came upon a huge cloud of dust as Roger Norman had just rolled his Trophy Truck. Todd caught a glimpse of bright orange which in that split second made him think of the straggler on an atv. He veered to the left to avoid the wreck only to come upon another racer with a flat stuck in the silt. As Todd pulled hard right on the steering wheel to avoid the class 1 car and Roger’s truck, they shot back across the course but caught a wheel in the deep ruts and launched into a violent barrel roll going over 3 to 5 times before they came to a rest. Thanks to the strength built into the Jimco chassis, Todd and TJ were shaken but not injured. All the hard work, preparation and intense effort that went into this race were dashed in a fraction of a second.

The car was pulled out and taken back to pit 7 where the crew jumped in assessing the damage and making plans to get it fixed and back out on course when it was determined that the rear trailing arm was beyond repair and they didn’t have a spare. You can rest assured that will be changed before the next race but those are just the things you learn as you go along with a new team.

The team’s next race will be on familiar terrain for the first time when they go back to Parker Arizona for the second time this season. It will give them the chance to apply what they learned at the season opener and get a gauge on how far they’ve progressed so far.

Representing Monster Energy in Class 1 was bike veteran Mikey Childress and Rock Crawler Champion Shannon Campbell.

Mikey Childress had a great start moving up from 5th to 4th until he had transmission problems with a failed torque converter that ended his day early at Race Mile 118. Shannon Campbell also fought the course, the field, and mechanical issues to at 19th overall and 9th in class finish. The team of Jerry Whelchel and Jerry Zaiden managed to fight their way through the dust to move from the 22nd starting position to nearly win the race! Towards the end of the race a combination of a dented drive shaft (which kept them under 80mph) and smashing multiple wheels on the giant embedded boulders that lined the racecourse like rows of teeth waiting to strike, took out their chances of overall victory. The team still managed to finish 4th in class and 7th place overall.

The team of Troy Herbst and Tim Herbst also started off running well until at race mile 210 they were stopped in a remote area with a broken transmission in the number 49 Herbst/ Monster Energy Trophy Truck. The team of Ed Herbst and Larry Roessler in the number 19 Herbst/ Monster Energy Trophy Truck also ran strong until they also lost all forward gears in the transmission at race mile 312. Undeterred off-road legend Larry Roessler put the truck in reverse and drove it backwards nearly 20 miles to the next pit where they were able to change the transmission and get the truck in for a finish.

“Ballistic” BJ Baldwin had issues all day; starting with a leak in his helmet visor that let in dust interfering with his vision and breathing all day. Then BJ had a failure in the dry brake fueling system causing him to be short fueled at multiple pits shortening his fuel range and forcing him to stop at almost every pit for fuel. Additionally BJ experienced a crank position sensor failure causing him to stop for over twelve minutes at Pit 9. Despite all the changes BJ managed to finish 3rd overall and 2nd in Class. In the end, The Monster Energy Off-Road team came away with one podium, and 4 top-20 finishers.

The story of the day was Kyle Conlon who set a blistering pace for more then half the race taking advantage of the clean air in front of him, but somewhere near RM525 he seemed to have some mechanical problem that took him out of contention. Another big story in the Trick Truck class was that of Camburg Racing, who with Jerry Whelchel at the wheel was in the position to get first place in the Trick Truck class on time, but around 10 miles from the finish they got a flat which wrapped itself around the axle causing them to have more downtime then they would of liked. The win would of given Camburg their first win in the Trick Truck class, but the strong showing and 6th overall position showed that their Trophy Truck is something to be taken serious.

A few of the top teams had to pull out early such as Mikey Childress at RM 118 with a blown torque converter, and Rick Johnson and Harley Letner a few miles before that both with blown motors. Both Roger Norman and the Milk-In-It team both had rollerovers which took them out of the race. Greg Nunley rolled at RM 232 and briefly blocked the course but was able to get turned over and finish in 6th place in class.

- Also showing just how much of a stud driver he is, Larry Roeseler drove the #19 Terrible Herbst truck in reverse for at least 10 miles to Pit 9 hanging out the driver side window steering the truck and waving to fans.

- Dan McMillin made his debut in the Trick Truck class pairing up with his pops Mark McMillin, proving that he can hang with the big boys in both Class 1 and Trophy Trucks. Trick Trucks, Unlimited Trucks, whatever they are called.

- Chuck Hovey drove the race solo in his single seat Jimco. When asked at tech if he was sharing driving duties he said “no one drives my baby but me.” We agree, seeing someone drive his single seat car just wouldn’t be right.

- Qualifying position didn’t seem to be an important factor as people thought, as many teams who qualified out of the top 25 finished high up in the rankings such as Olliges/Swift in the Team Ford Trick Truck who started 37th and finished 5th overall, Mark/Dan McMillin; 27th/10th, Freitas; 26th/3rd, Chad Ragland 65th/11th, and Canidae 34th/8th.

For updates on all other classes make sure you check out the live coverage and also the “Official” V2R thread on the forums.

Shane Esposito and teammate Chris Brown on the THR KAWI battled it out with David Pearson’s Honda all day in the hot desert of Nevada for the BITD TSCO Vegas to Reno, America’s longest off road race.

In the morning hours though, it was “Mad” Max Eddy Jr. who set an amazing pace out of the start of his noteworthy solo mission. As readers may recall, Mad Max went solo on this one in honor of his mother Dianna, who is succumbing to her battle with cancer. http://www.race-dezert.com/home/mad-max-to-solo-v2r-for-diannas-cure-21493.html

After a valiant and stoic effort, IRONMAX blew the motor

Text chatter from the desert had Max out in front of the other leaders be a wide margin but all of that stopped around 10 AM as Max got to a dry lake bed and there were missing markers and tire tracks leading in three directions. Apparently, Max chose the wrong one and went AWOL. When he got to checkpoint 6, race officials stopped him and held him. There was some talk that they might make him load up his bike and truck it back to pit 4, but that never happened. Instead they let him continue and decided that race organizers would asses whatever time penalty was warranted after the finish. Meanwhile back on the dry lakebed, about 40 riders were lost and off track. One of the smartest guys out there was Tim Morton. He went up on a mountain to see where everyone was going. This gave him the bird’s eye perspective of where he should go. It paid off and he won the over 40 pro class and came in at around 15th OA. But THE smartest guy out there was Esposito, who chose the right line and hauled ass outa there. I guess he’s the “smartest” because he won.

Later on in Max’s solo race, he blew the motor on his HONDA in the middle of the desert and started sending his distress signal with his SPOT tracker. Word is from other racers reporting at pits that Max was okay.

With Mad Max out of the picture, all eyes turned toward former teammates and longtime rivals Shane Esposito and David Pearson, both of whom were on the Bonanza Plumbing THR KTM in last years BAJA 1000. Both men spent weeks prepping in BAJA before their cursed KTM 530 failed only miles after Pearson mounted south of San Felipe.

PURVINES HONDA TEAM LEADER DAVID PEARSON

For the last half of the race, Espo led Pearson and was holding him off by 1.5 minutes on physical and less than that on time adjusted. As they came into Dayton for the finish, Espo, had won himself another V2R title. Good stuff for Shane, Chris and the THR stable. I’m sure you’ll see them in Ensenada this Nov.

At over 550 miles in length, Best In The Desert’s TSCO “Vegas to Reno” race is certifiably “The Longest Off-Road Race in the United States.” It marks the midway point for the five-race 2011 Best In The Desert season featuring the car and truck classes and is one of the most popular events on the schedule. The challenge and adventure of competing in such a long distance “point to point” race always brings out the top off-road race teams. Not only is this going to be a big event but it’s also the 14th running of TSCO “Vegas to Reno.” This race is open to all Best In The Desert classes – cars, trucks, UTVs, quads and motorcycles and over 300 entries are expected from all across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, and even South Africa. The entry list reads like a “who’s who” of the world’s foremost off-road racers.

Casey Folks, director of Best In The Desert, has worked closely with the BLM to obtain the required permits and set up a course that avoids endangered species, and does not harm the environment. The race starts near the town of Beatty, Nevada, with all classes starting off the line on Friday, August 19th. Originally part of the Bullfrog Mining District, today Beatty serves as an important gateway to Death Valley National Park, and is only 115 miles northwest from Las Vegas. The course traverses a part of the legendary Pony Express Trail made famous 148 years ago, and finishes up in Dayton, just east of Reno, Nevada. The TSCO “Vegas to Reno” race takes racers from the high desert floor at 2,500 feet elevation to mountainous heights of over 9,000 feet, forcing competitors to constantly adjust to the changing atmospheric pressures, and endure extreme hot and cold temperature variations. This course features some of the toughest, and most varied terrain in the world. Racers must fight their way through narrow canyons, boulder lined paths, bottomless silt-beds, and across expansive dry lakebeds where speeds well over 100 MPH are reached.

The weekend gets started Wednesday, August 17th, for Trick Truck and Class 1500 open class buggy racers as they qualify in the Time Trails to determine their starting positions and compete for the $1000 “Team Ford Pole Award”. To date, $42,600 has been paid out for the Parker “425” and Silver State “300” top finishers.

The TSCO “Vegas to Reno” race also offers racing fans the chance to check out the action starting out with contingency on Thursday, August 18th, where they can roam through the huge manufacturer’s midway to see the race vehicles up close and rub elbows with the racers. Then on race day, spectators will be able to check out the race progress from any of the 15 pits located along the course. Most of the pits are right off US-95 with easy access. And with safety in mind, racers must obey a 25 MPH speed limit through all pits.

Red Bull will be supporting contingency at the Aliante Station Resort & Casino in North Las Vegas, and also at the finish line at the Dayton, Nevada Event Center.

TrailGlow’s INERGY lighting systems greatly increase visibility during night races. In addition to number panels, the company produces custom illuminated decals, pit signs and illuminated pit crew, media and staff vests.

“We put our truck on its side at night at the 2008 Vegas to Reno race,” said team owner Steve Rose. “We damaged the battery and lost radio communications. Fortunately, we were running our TrailGlow number panels off a battery pack. We found the truck quickly, got it repaired and got back in the race. Without them, we might not have found the truck and team for hours.”

Rose started on the drag racing circuit in the ‘70s, shifting to dirt track racing in 2005, taking the Victorville Speedway championship in 2005. The team won its first off road race – the 2005 MORE Powder Puff Race — shortly after purchasing a 7S truck, went on to win the MORE Toys for Tots race the same year. Rose and driver Robbie Cockrell won their class in the MORE series in 2007 and 2009 and in 2010 took class wins at Battle at Primm, Vegas to Reno and Rage at the River, with a career total of 23 wins in 28 races.

“Steve is a phenomenal competitor, we’re proud to support his racing program and are looking forward to more podium finishes in 2011,” said TrailGlow president Paul Lukey.

Tightening Up with Only Two Races Remaining

on the 2010 Schedule

September 10, 2010 – Las Vegas, NV

The points standings for Best In The Desert’s five-race “American Off-Road Racing Series” overall and class championships are getting even tighter after the running of the very popular and safe “double points” Vegas to Reno race last month.

Only one point separates the top two in not only the overall but also the Class 1500 leaders with Steve Croll having sitting in the top spot with 361 points over second place Chris Appleton with 360 points. Not far behind are Vince Galewick (third, 331 points), Chris Kemp and Travis Chase (tied for fourth, 324 points each), and Adam Pfankuch (fifth, 316 points) as Class 1500 racers make up the majority of the top ten overall points standings. This is due largely to the tight competition and the consistently huge field of open Class 1500 cars that Best In The Desert attracts for their races.

Leading the Class 7200 field and coming in sixth overall is Alan A. Hogan with 309 points. The Trick Truck standings are extremely tight as well with Marc Ewing (304 points) holding a narrow margin of only 3 points over B.J. Baldwin (301points) as the two sit at seventh and eighth overall. At ninth overall is Class 2000 leader Kevin Smith with 295 points. Current Class 1100 leader Lee Banning Sr., with 288 points, rounds out the overall top ten.

Other Best In The Desert class points leaders include John Hsu (260 points), Class 1000; Troy Vest (275 points), Class 1200; John Helton (222 points), Class 1700 JeepSpeed; Kevin Smith (Class 2000), Dave Schneider (256 points), Class 4400 Utra4; Louis Chamberland (223 points), Class 6000 Trophylite; Blake Henn (267 points), Class 7100; Kellon Walch (195 points), Class 7300; Macrae Glass (276 points), Class 8000; and Tim Casey (269 points), Class 8100.

Having a great rookie year so far is Chris Appleton. Not only is he one point shy of the overall points standings, he also sits in the top spot for the coveted “Rookie of the Year” award with 360 points. Still within striking distance of him and tied for second place with 324 points each, is “Vegas to Reno” race winner Chris Kemp and Travis Chase. All three are Class 1500 drivers.

The tight points battles will only add to the excitement for the next race on the Best In The Desert 2010 calendar, the all new BlueWater Desert Challenge in Parker, AZ, October 15-17, hosted by the BlueWater Resort & Casino. This is the newest off-road desert race in “The American Off-Road Racing Series” and features an action packed 2-day loop-race format. Huntington Beach, CA – The 2010 Best in the Desert TSCO Vegas to Reno Off-Road Race starts outside of Las Vegas in the small town of Beatty and finishes just outside of Reno in Dayton. This race was 534 miles and is known as the “the longest off-road race in the United States”. The wide spectrum of terrain ranging from rocks, silt, gravel roads, sand washes and huge cliffs is challenging to say the least along with the 100 plus degree weather.

The week prior to the race the Camburg crew met the unexpected and made for some very long days and stressful nights. During a test session out in Barstow to work on some transmission cooling issues, the valve train in the engine let go, causing a piston to explode only 10 minutes in. Now the countdown to Vegas to Reno was on! Turnkey Engine Supply has been battling with the unique valve train since they built the engine, so after this failure they decided to go with what they know works best and is tried and true, GM Performance parts. Camburg pulled the engine and immediately got it to Turnkey where they removed the old heads, rebuilt the block and installed the new GM Performance high flow LS heads. Turnkey worked day and night, pulled off the impossible and got the new engine to the Camburg crew the week of the race. Working 18 hour days Camburg got the engine back in, prepped and then took the truck back down to Turnkey where they ran it on the chassis dyno to optimize power and fuel management. Now with the engine working the best it ever has, the race team worked day and night before the event to get the truck ready to battle the 534 mile course. Camburg arrived in Las Vegas Thursday afternoon for contingency missing qualifying but thankfully ready to go.

The following morning, Jason Campbell and co-driver Austin “Fish” Farner started the race and piloted the first 335 miles. Off the line behind all the TT and Class 1 qualifiers, they immediately experienced high transmission temps. 230-250 degree readings kept them from pushing the truck to any where near its potential. At mile 60, Jason pulled off course and had to stop for around 10 minutes to let the temperature drop. They battled the cooling all the way to Pit 10 at mile 335 for their scheduled driver change. Short of the cooling issues, Jason was very happy with the trucks handling and the changes they made prior to the race.

Jerry Zaiden and his co-driver Craig Hall got in for the last leg of the race. At this point, Camburg Racing was running in the top 10 in the Trick Truck class on corrected time and had a clear race course ahead of them. Jerry and Craig ran into the same issues as Jason with the high transmission temperatures which made for a slow pace and having to stop many times. Once the outside temps started to cool down later in the day, they were able to step up the pace a bit and try and make up lost time. Unfortunately about 10 miles out from the finish, the engine stalled going through a tight off camber corner and caused a loss in power steering thus steering control. Not being able to correct, the truck ended up on its side in a slow speed ¾ roll. A special thanks goes out to the Chase Motorsports team as they lost time pulling the Camburg truck over onto all fours. Back under way, the Camburg General Tires KINETIK TT crossed the finish line in 11hrs. 47 mins. With the down time associated with the cooling issues and roll-over, the Camburg Racing team is very confident the truck is getting close to a top finish!

The Camburg Racing crew congratulates fellow General Tire racer Rick Johnson and his team for their outstanding win!

Camburg would like to thank all their sponsors for the opportunity to race this elite class. Without their support and the support of team members and fellow racers, this wouldn’t be possible or mean as much as it does.

“This truck and class is still new to us and we made a few changes to the truck before this race. We relocated the transmission coolers to the rear for weight bias and to shorten up the nose for better approach angles and made spring and valving changes to the shocks. Battling high temps all day with the transmission with no failures shows us what Lucas Oil really does for our race program. The Eibach springs we received before the race were spot on and the new piston and valving from FOX had the truck working the best it ever has.” – Jason Campbell

“I am beyond pleased with the General Tires as they owned the sharp rocks from mile 490 to the finish. Zero flats in that section is a true testament what these tires can handle. Running through the night with cliffs along the course left no room for error and KC’s HID POD lighting gave us more than enough useable light to navigate these sections at speed. Using these lights for the last few years, I can’t say enough good things about them.” – Jerry Zaiden

MONGO Racing Finishes 2nd in the “Longest Off-Road Race in the United States”

By Steven Draper

At 1130 am on August 20, 2010 the Mongo Racing prepped KC Hilites Ford F-150 from Parker, Arizona began the Best In the Desert Racing Association’s “Vegas to Reno” also know as the “Longest Off-Road Race in the United States.” Taking the Green light was Tracy Rubio, of Kingman, AZ, and Mongo Racing’s longtime co-rider Chris Golding.

Tracy Rubio subbed for Randy Merritt in the Silver State 300 as Randy recovered from his injury incurred at the BITD “Parker 425” and was scheduled to drive the first half of the BITD “Vegas to Reno.”

Randy Merritt was scheduled to make his return to the driver’s seat of the number 8181 KC Hilites Ford F-150 in the second half of this 534 mile race across western Nevada.

Tracy piloted the KC Hilites Ford F-150 skillfully across the desert and around many it’s hidden dangers. The plan was to run a conservative pace for the first 300 miles and race to the finish if needed. The KC Hilites Ford F-150 was up to the task, but the Nevada desert posed a much larger foe than the competition. After the first33 miles the KC Hilites Ford F-150 was in first place on corrected time, but a large dry lake silt bed stopped several race vehicles including all the trucks racing in the Class 8100 near race mile 44.

At race mile 64, the Mongo Racing KC Hilites Ford F-150 was now in third position and was over 40 minutes behind the leader, but the Mongo Racing team said there was still a chance for victory.

Tracy piloted the KC Hilites Ford F-150 to race mile 263 where Randy Merritt got in for the first time under race conditions since February 3, 2010. Long time friend and Co-Rider Steve Solaiza joined Randy in this momentous journey. Randy left the pit in the middle of the desert near Silver Peaks, Nevada on a mission. Knowing he was 38 minutes behind the leader and 271 miles left to the finish line Randy drove the KC Hilites Ford F-150 harder than ever before.

Randy drove the KC Hilites Ford F-150 to within 18 minutes of the leader, but race traffic would prove to be his Achilles heel. “I could catch the other race vehicles, but getting around them was tough,” said Randy Merritt.

“The Goodyear Wrangler GSA Tires performed great and this is the fourth race in a row with no flats or tire problems and its great confidence booster knowing I can drive that hard without worrying about the tires,” added Randy Merritt.

In the end, Randy Merritt and Mongo Racing finished 2nd place in class 8100 at approximately 1:15 am on Saturday morning. The official finishing time was not available at time of release.

Randy Merritt said, “The KC Hilites 70 Watt Pod lights proved to be worth every penny as I charged through the darkness.”

“The new 3G seats and safety belts by MasterCraft Safety are incredibly comfortable and exclusive design make me feel that I could have drove this entire race myself,” added Randy at the finish line.

After the race Randy said, “We’ve raced this Ford truck for almost 7 years and I have never drove this hard for that long and it be in this great shape at the end of a 500 mile Off-Road race. Just goes to show – Built Ford Tough”

The next race for the Mongo Racing KC Hilites Ford F-150 is the Best In The Desert Blue Water Desert Challenge October 15-17, 2010 in Parker, Arizona, for additional team information visit www.mongoracing.com on the web.

The #1543 Speed Technologies prepared and supported Class 1500 car had a practically flawless race. “It went so smooth that we held our breath to the finish,” laughed Kevin Singleton, Speed Technologies General Manager. “The BFGoodrich tires worked perfect with no flats the entire 500 plus miles.”

Kemp started his fifth desert race 20th off the line behind both of the Herbst trucks. After 219 miles of dust, they brought him in at Pit 6 for a quick fuel dump and got him back out on course before the Herbst truck, strategically putting him into clean air. Once in the clean air, he started picking off cars and trucks and by Hawthorne he had the lead. They crossed the finish line at 9 hours and 20 minutes.

“This is for Chuck Dempsey,” said Kemp at the Finish Line about his co-driver at the Silver State 300 race. After an engine failure at Silver State 300, the car came to the Speed Technologies shop to get a full engine rebuild, transmission and converter, shock package and complete race prep to be ready for a successful run at the Vegas to Reno race. The car will now have StopTech Brakes installed, which will complete the transformation to mirroring a Speed Technologies Class 1 buggy.

The dust did more than soar for Johnson’s opponents at Friday’s heart-pounding BITD race – it consumed them. The Team General Tire Trick Truck driver left his contenders in a cloud of dust as he took an incredible 3-mile lead. He held his position strong, battling through the desert’s rugged terrain and remaining at the head of the pack at mile marker 355.

“This was an awesome race,” said Travis Roffler, director of marketing, General Tire. “This was a dominating race for Rick; he took the lead early on and his determination to finish on top never wavered. For everyone here at BITD Vegas to Reno, it was an incredible show! We’re so proud of Rick and we’re thrilled to have him as part of Team GT.”

Johnson has a winning track record as the overall winner at the 2008 BITD Vegas to Reno race, first place at 2009 SCORE Baja 500 and third at the 2010 SNORE Mint 400.

Johnson takes first in Trophy Truck and first overall.

Quinn Cody and his Honda CRF450X do the unthinkable and win the 2010 TSCO BITD Vegas to Reno solo! After 8 hours of racing, as the finish line drew near, the word was already starting to spread that Quinn Cody’s impossible task was being realized. At the end of the 533 mile race and after a full 9:21.18 of racing, Quinn emerged victorious in Americas longest most grueling Off-Road race.

Quinn’s race support came from Charli Brodeur, Hide Hanawa & Scott Dunlavey who handled bike & rider maintenance and Eric Siraton who built and prepped the race bike.

“With this level of accomplishment Quinn has defined himself amongst the very elite of Off-Road racers. It is unlikely this record will ever be broken”. — Johnny Campbell

After a bad qualifying run put them into the 26th spot to start, they overcame about 11 minutes of downtime working on the truck and still climbed up into 2nd out of 48 Class 1400 Trick Trucks registered for Friday August 20, 2010 race.
“We had a great race and everything went really well overall! I am glad that Armin was able to join us for his first experience in a trophy truck. It is tough because it is completely different to drive than a Class 1 car, but he did a great job!” said Norman.
Armin Schwartz, a World Rally driver from Germany, took the drivers seat at Race Mile 308 with his navigator and crew chief Bryan Lytle as his co-driver. “I have been looking for quite some time to drive in a trophy truck, and am glad to be in a good truck with a great team,” said Armin Schwartz. “For me it was unbelievable what you can do with a truck. It fly’s very well, especially when you have unknown obstacles,” laughs Schwartz. “It was very exciting because we tried to increase the speed mile, by mile, and not have any stupid mistakes. It paid off as we only had one flat.”
The Norman Motorsports team had great pit stops all day long, even the drivers change was only a minute and a half. “I haven’t raced in a couple of months, and it took me about an hour to get into the groove and start clicking again. I will say I felt much safer driving in the dust knowing the motorcycles and ATV’s had lights, and we successfully used our Pass Alert system a couple of times,” said Norman who was a leader in the recent safety movement.

As a reminder, Norman Motorsports in El Cajon, CA will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit FAST-Aid, Cruz Roja and the Emergency Services of Erendira this Saturday August 28, 2010, doors open at 2pm. The premier of Dezert People 8 will be at 3pm and will show continuously throughout the afternoon. Charity gaming, a silent auction and other fun activities will round off the evening. Admission to the fundraiser is $30 per person, which includes a copy of Dezert People 8. Become a Facebook friend of Roger Norman or Curtis Guise and RSVP to the event to attend this very special benefit event. Fans, Sponsors, and Friends are welcome, but must RSVP via Facebook.
From halfway through the course he was in the lead pack and never looked back as he overalled the 2010 BITD Vegas 2 Reno race.

A few thoughts and observations from the RDC crew.

- Road crossings were stopping race traffic for highway traffic. Before Pit 1 many teams were able to make up much needed time while the racer in front of them were stopped.
- Dust seemed to play a large role as expected in the Nevada desert.
- The 25 MPH rule in all pits seemed to be well excepted by all teams to help with safety.
- IRC was field testing 50 pass alert systems.
- Herbst #19 changed a tranny in Pit 5.
- Sourapas/McMillin lost a cam plug near Pit 7.

Forgive me for not writing here for a while. I was simply swamped with work and trying to keep up with all the meetings and things I had to do. But today I’ve got some great news: Together with Roger Norman I will tackle the Vegas to Reno Race next week in one of his Trophy Trucks! On Tuesday I’ll fly to Las Vegas. On Wednesday there will be the Qualifying race on a five mile course for the best starting times. And on Friday the big race is on! The distance is 530 miles, I’ll take over from Roger at Race Mile 308. There’s a very interesting challenge in this race: We have no recce or pre-run. The only way we know where we’re going at race speed is by the organiser’s road book and GPS data. The race is a round of the “Best in the Desert” (BITD) championship.

Roger Norman on the rocks: we met during my winter training in icy Ivola/Finland

I’m really confident, because as usual I’ll have my navigator and our crew chief Bryan Lyttle at my side in the cockpit at our Trophy Truck premiere. And All German Motorsports is going to work together with Roger’s team for the pit support. That’s additional motivation.

Roger Norman is one of the true greats of our sport. Already in 1999 he won the BITD Championship. In 2001 and 2008 Roger and the Norman Motorsports Team clinched wins at the Baja 1000 – to name just a few of his countless successes.

Roger and I met during the winter training that I organise up in Finland’s Ivalo in February. We started talking about our sport … and sometimes things just turn out fabulously! I’m immensely looking forward to racing with Roger, and I’d like to thank him and his team for their trust.

On 11 September I’ll be back in the AGM buggy for the Primm 300 …

After the Vegas to Reno Race my family and I’ll spend a few days in the USA. On the 28th and 29th August I’ll be testing with my friends and colleagues of AGM for the upcoming Primm 300 on 11 September. Armin Kremer and Andy Aigner will join us in the second AGM Buggy for the race, so our team will turn up at the Primm 300 in full strength.

… I am already looking forward to the pre-run – and some night shifts in the desert

But before the flag drops for the Primm 300 I have a very special and pleasant date in my calendar: BF Goodrich Germany will arrive in Nevada with guests on 9 September, and I’ll do my best to show them the fascination of our sport. They’ll see the technical scrutineering before the start, the race – and they do a trip into Nevada’s desert. I have the feeling this is going to be an unforgettable journey for the guests of BF Goodrich. I say to them all right now: “Welcome to the All German Motorsports Team!”

I’ll be back here with all the news at the latest after the Primm 300.

Until then
best wishes,
Armin
