211 cars, trucks and UTVs showed up to take on the challenging southern Nevada desert at the Best in the Desert’s Terrible’s 250 at Primm. Because Best in the Desert always puts safety first, and due to the 73 mile loop, the race was divided into two races to accommodate the different classes of vehicles. The first group for classes 1100, 2000, 3000, 5000, 8100, 7100, 4100, 3700, 7300, 3100,1700, 5100, 1800 and 1900 got under way at 6:00 am Saturday morning. Taking the first overall spot for this group was the Class 1100 car of Mike Williams and Tim Jones.
Shortly after noon, the second race got started for classes 1400 Trick Truck, 1500, 1200, 8000, 1000, and 7200. It was a sprint race from the very start. But when the leading Trick Trucks of Jerry Welchel and Andy McMillin tangled with traffic while lapping, taking them out of contention for the win, “Pistol” Pete Sohren and Rick D. Johnson found themselves in a heated battle for the overall victory. A flat tire allowed Johnson to get around Sohren and hold on for the overall and 1400 Trick Truck class win. Sohren got back on track to take second overall, two minutes behind the leader.

Next up for Best in the Desert is the Vegas to Reno – “The Long Way” race in August, a 1,000 mile, three day event. With stops each night at “Camp Adventure”, racers and their teams will have the opportunity to make repairs and adjustments to their vehicles – in a controlled environment. The first day, racers will run 342 miles and stop for the night at Tonopah, Nevada. The second day the course is 366 miles, with an overnighter at Hawthorne, Nevada. The last leg runs 300 miles and ends in Reno, Nevada. Each of the nights at “Camp Adventure” will offer the opportunity to make some repairs, strategize for the next day’s route, and set the racer’s minds at rest…if they can get some sleep! With the night’s action including live music, a beer garden and great food, this race and these nights will go down in off-road racing history as some of the best. It is recommended you contact the Sands Regency hotel in Reno, headquarters hotel, for reservations. Call Peggi Gold at 888-767-3658 for reservations.
