Best in the Desert will be utilizing tracking by the well-regarded firm International Racing Consultants, known as IRC. Specialists in
advanced satellite communications in land, air and sea sports as well as commercial and personal logistics with many years of
experience, IRC has been successfully providing tracking for Best in the Desert events for more than 20 races over 4 years.
The main focus of their services are to provide tracking and the ability for racers to contact officials in the event of an emergency or a
breakdown.
“In an event this long, with complicated logistics, it’s imperative we have all of our safety measures in place,” stated Casey Folks,
director of Best in the Desert. He went on, “We’ve had a lot of success in helping racers on that rare occurrence that someone needed
medical assistance with the IRC system in place. Our long track record with IRC has helped us establish a fair and equitable running of
our races for many years. Their systems use sophisticated GPS electronics; plus we maintain a stand-alone timing system with triplechecks
for accuracy. With nearly 300 entries running over three days, this is the best way to ensure the safety of our racers and
their teams.”
Best in the Desert’s Policy and Use of the IRC Tracking/Monitoring System:
1. Primary use is: SAFETY! The IRC system allows BITD to be notified of impacts, roll overs and alerts from fellow competitors and to
improve response time to accidents.
2. Race course closing: This information enables BITD retrieval personnel to locate broken competitors and assist in providing the
most efficient and environmentally correct way of cleaning the race course.
3. Event Logistics: During the start of each event, this data gives advanced information about approaching racers to check point and
road crossing personnel. This is in addition to radio relayed information.
4. Media information: The IRC data provides the public with unofficial status of the racers during the event. This allows “watching” the
race in near real time.
5. Back up data for investigation of protests/infractions: The IRC data can be used to provide additional information for on course
violations that are reported by Best in the Desert officials, government officials (BLM, Highway Patrol, etc.) and to help resolve official
protests lodged by a competitor in the proper fashion. Best in the Desert does not use this technology as the sole means of resolving
these issues.
“Camp Adventure” is gathering a lot of interest. Held each night of the event, racers and their teams will have the chance to make
repairs and adjustments to their race vehicles – in a controlled environment. Bench-racing opportunities will be abundant, with storyswapping
part of the evening’s entertainment.
The first day, racers will run 331 miles and stop for the night at Tonopah, Nevada, sponsored by McMillin Racing. The second day the
course is 361 miles, with an overnighter at Hawthorne, Nevada, sponsored by KC Hilites. The last leg runs 300 miles and ends in Reno,
Nevada, sponsored by Speed Technologies. Each of the nights at “Camp Adventure” will offer the opportunity to make some repairs,
strategize for the next day’s route, and set the racer’s minds at rest…if they can get some sleep! Each night’s action includes live music,
Red Bull hospitality, a beer garden featuring both hops and root style, and more surprises coming.
The experience in your race vehicle at this event will be a life-changing one you will never forget.
The question is, are you and your team ready for the challenge?
