Thanks... I have a set of 7" rims with about 0.5" positive offset that fit the stock configuration. I didn't know if there was a good rule of thumb to follow or just hope it fits.

Thanks, I'll probably make a jig as well as take my time and not let it get too hot. I was thinking I should put extra tack welds on all the link mounts and supports before laying the larger beads. Maybe weld a couple of braces on the cut them off later.

When welding link mounts and gussets on a stock axle, do I need to make a jig to keep the axle from warping or is this even a problem?

Toyota axles are pretty tough. Pre '86 axles are smaller tube diameter and not as wide as '86 and after axles. An '86 axle is about 3" in diameter but still uses the same third member as the '85's. LC Engineering has axle gussets pretty cheap and should not be too bad in shipping. You could...

I agree, I've seen a worn liner cause changes in wire speed and result in problems like this. Also, make sure there are no air currents blowing your sheilding gas out of the way. It might be trivial but, here's a list of common problems from the Lincoln Electric website...
