Russell Welch & John Howard No 504 were 3rd in Class 5 ...... I am the proud owner of Russell's dune buggy, I believe the following year in 82 he won the championship and the 1000

There is so much win in this thread. I read almost every word of the race report. It was cool seeing the legends of the sport covered when they were in their prime.

Silt reports of 50 cars stuck with silt above the bottoms of the doors...some things never change :)

I was in Puertecitos watching the bikes and cars go by through a wall of dust late into the night until our parents came and dragged us off to bed around 3am. The beginning of an obsession. Pretty sure that was '81.

I raced class 11 at the 81 1000 made it threw the horrible silt near Punta priata led all night back to Ensanada sheared the beef a dif in the trans in Ensanada on the pavement. We changed the trans a 9 iron shot from the finish and watched the winner cross the line as we were bolting the axle back up. We tried

It was my first time to watch a 1000. Butch Arciero, driving the Jim Guthrie car, broke down in front of us just south of El Chinero. We towed him back to the check point. I've been involved one way or the other since then.
